Would you be for or against Witten getting a spot on this staff?

I love Witten. Happy when they drafted him. Loved watching him play. But I never...EVER...saw him as a guy that mentored the younger players. That's where a coach needs to excel. If you want an old player getting some beginner's assistant coaching position here, I'd take Lee long before I would Witten.

I don't want one of Mr. Jones' cheerleaders on the staff, I don't trust him. I do not think his loyalty to the coaching staff would equal that to Mr. Jones. As a devotee of Booger's and calling him Mr. Jones because he gave him the opportunity to attempt to counter his embarrassment in broadcasting, he's got some company monkey in him. He and Spagnola should play Bridge with Booger & Son.

Just because a player can do does not mean he can teach and vice versa.

It’s a no from me.

He wasn’t a good teacher as a teammate and was a me first kinda guy.

There has been one player (MB) that I’m aware of that said JW never helped him and often told him “I dunno, figure it out.”

I’d be curious about what the other TE’s throughout his tenure thought of JW tho.

I love Witten. He loves the game and bleeds blue and silver. As a player he has earned respect and will be a HOFer.

Coaching is an entirely different skillset. Just bc you are the best widget maker on the factory floor, does not mean you have the skillset to manage the factory floor.

I think for his own benefit he needs to get some skins on the wall elsewhere to prove he can coach. Come back to Dallas in 5-10 years

Hard pass. Vestiges of this most recent regime must be wiped post haste. All due respect to Jason and his many contributions to the franchise, but I can't help but associate his voice with Garrett-think and the message that comes with it.

Now that may not be fair, but for my taste he's too close/aligned with the likes of the Basketball Bunch and the Jones family to have a meaningful role on the staff at this time.

I imagine most people will be like oh hell yes da Pope do it but would anyone have an issue with the Cowboys (Jerry) finding a role for him on this new staff to begin his grooming?

I love Jason Witten. Absolutely love the guy.
Tough as Nails. First ballot Hall of Famer for sure. Guy was everything you want your son to be, everything you'd want your daughter to marry.
Character, integrity, etc.

And FWIW--I don't think he at all has the makings of a coach. To me Witt has an incredible amount of character traits that made him an incredible player.

But I don't think he has the personality traits that would make him a great coach or presence in the locker room.
That's just my opinion and I'll probably get filleted for it.

But when I look at Witten, I don't see coach. Just my $.02

He'd be a good position coach, but a head coach. He's too chummy with the players to be the HC.

I don't get all the hate. Yes, Witten should no longer be playing but how do we know he would be a bad TE coach? Kellen Moore is our OC after a couple of seasons as a backup QB and one season as OC. Witten has been in the league for years and is a future HOF.

As long as Big Mac is ok with it, I wouldn't mind Witten as a QC coach or even TE coach. I do believe the head coach should pick his entire staff, and I also think we need a clear chain of command (I hate the whole passing coordinator and running coordinator BS).
If Garrett was staying on then I'd be less against it since he would be teaching the offense he played in his whole career essentially. The WCO should be different so he is going to have to learn those concepts and learn to teach.

Moore is entirely different IMO because who knows Dak better and is going to be able to help him make the transition to the WCO better than him? I'm really glad he is staying.

I'd have no issue with it. Smart as a whip, knows how things should be done. Has earned the opportunity to show what he can do as a coach. If he stinks.. fire him.... but has earned the right for a chance at a positional coach.

I think he needs to start as a QC or assistant position. TE coach out of the box seems too forced. I also think the HC needs to be 100 pct behind it. I don’t want anyone forced on McCarthy. Witten might be a great coach someday but he should work his way up.

My preference is for the head coach to pick his staff. And, if McCarthy has the choice, I doubt he's stopping with an inexperienced coach like Witten as a TE coach.

I have a ton of respect for what Witten accomplished in his playing career, but if he wants to coach, go the Belichick route. Start off as a groundskeeping guy who does grunt work for no money and earn your way to being a position coach. Otherwise, I wish him luck in his future endeavors.

I don't need anyone teaching the "Cowboys way" to any new players.

as a TE coach or as a lower end assistant.....sure bring him on. Let him learn the difference in coaching and playing. Just no major HC job straight from playing and a year in the booth. Teaching the next generation and getting knowledge from people with experience is how to gain and not lose knowledge of the game.

Low level to start there's no denying his passion and determination the man was never fast, but his understanding of the game and ability to run routes and get open consistently could only benefit any receiver on the Dallas Cowboys just don't lay too much on him all at once being a player and a coach are two different things

I dunno. What are the prerequisites for being a position coach?
