The only way we franchise Dak under a new coach is if he absolutely refuses to sign a contract.
The franchise tag is not a good way to go with a QB. It hamstrings signing other players and being active in free agency because he's suddenly counting 32 million against the cap this season.

Dak needs to be signed so that his cap hit is minimal and the new guys can find the players they need to be successful in 2020.

We are paying Dak. I don't believe for a minute that McCarthy sold Jones to move on from Dak before he would take the job.

I believe McCarthy thinks he can win with Dak or he would not have taken the job

mole mike be looking real stupid real soon

The knuckleheads on this board want us to do what Washington did and allow a very good productive QB to walk and go for a lesser QB who’s cheaper. That way the Cowboys could go down the drain while Dak goes off and makes a well coached team with motivated players a Super Bowl contender.

I look at it from the other side. I see teams with incompetent coaches that refuse to change their QB because he's average or above average and "franchise guys are hard to come by." Then eventually they're fired and that QB, despite all the roster changes, went untouched. I see us going down the path of the 49ers/Chiefs and Alex Smith, the bengals Andy Dalton, the Bucs and winston, the giants and eli (save the two runs they had. I dont want an average team for 15 years), etc.

I trust this new decisive coach with a history of having a great QB can quickly and effectively determine if he believes Dak is the guy. I'd rather not waste more than we have to. If they truly believe all the issues I'm seeing are minimal and its just me then fine. But as of now it's not sitting in his favor.

McCarthy was on record saying he liked Dak before he even got here. Dak is here to stay and he's about to have a career year. We should lock him up before training camp.

absolutely refuses???? What are you smoking?

tell dak to go shop himself around. He damn sure won’t refuse the fully guaranteed tag after that. Cowboys will regret. Dak won’t. Dak sucks

There's always room for discussion, regardless of agreement.

No ........ Not about this.
I have discussed Dak ad nauseum with the people who have disliked him since he took Romo's job ........ I am bored of trying to convince people who wouldn't change their mind even if Dak won a Superbowl ..... They will always have an excuse.

So again ........ No

Agree with everything you said besides the Eli dig. Put Eli on this cowboys team. We damn sure don’t miss the playoffs

Now that we can finally purge the organization for Jason Garrett's stench the biggest question that remains is what do we do with Dak?
Clearly he is not a top 5 QB, and that is ok with me, but I also cannot pay him as such even though him and his agent demand that be the case.

I also don't believe Jerry is willing to really consider an alternative. I am good with using the Franchise tag if Jerry goes out and makes another move at QB. I would not want to waste 30 million on one year if we end up signing him next off season to an even larger contract. The whole kick the can down the road with QB contracts does not seem like a prudent philosophy.

1) We bit the bullet and sign him to a Wentz type contract and move on. Do we think the Front office can find another QB? Can we find another Dak/ Minshew?

2) Franchise Dak? What does that buy us? Is it to find out if we he is the long term solution?

3) Move on from Dak right now. What options do we have?
Keenum/ Rivers/ T.Hill, Winston, Mariotta. How much do we trust our infrastructure to develop an existing qb?
Franchise Dak so Big Mike can assess if Dak is worth keeping.

Well, when can we talk then? Cause he ain’t winning no super bowl. You do realize his play isn’t anything special right? Yet he wants to be paid like he is special

If he plays for cowboys this year, he won’t last half the season. It’ll be like Marriotta and tannahill

Lots of coaches that don’t coach him, like him. Especially when he doesn’t make any money

I never said he wouldn't sign the franchise tag....we would be the stupid ones to offer it. The franchise tag is not just a one year prove it deal. The franchise tag makes your QB the highest cap hit in the league and hampers your ability to resign anyone else or be active in free agency. We would be idiots to franchise him.

He would only refuse to sign a contract if Jerry was low-balling him or if he was tired of the circus and wanted out of Dallas. I'm not saying either is a fact, just explaining that he will be signed to a real contract, not the franchise tag, unless he actually wants to move on, which I doubt.

We will lose good players this year and lose out on others in free agency if we are paying a QB 30+ million under the franchise tag this year.
You sign him or you let him walk now.

McCarthy will hit the Dak-Wall as did Linehan, Garrett, and this time the when the cards fall they will not chop off another HC head for Dak's ineptness!
2020 is Daks last season as our starting QB....Bet the house!

Any other team finds a franchise quarterback they lock him up. In his fourth season he throws for 30 TDs and 11 picks with 4900 yards......doing that while being the most inaccurate passer in the league according to fans. Anyone else did that at 26 years old you’d be trying to lock them up. Instead he has to try and prove he’s still a franchise QB. Insane.

Their argument is his numbers are good against bad teams and in garbage time. May be a tiny sliver of truth to that but you can't deny the big picture. And our prior head coach put a ton of pressure on the QB to win with little coaching help.

Where they're 1000% wrong is they think QBs who can win games just grow on trees and it's sooo easy to replace Dak. That's mind boggling...

What if I told you I was a believer in Dak his rookie year about midway through, after refusing to buy the early hype. And certain red flags became apparent when teams punched us back late in the season. And nothing has changed since other than he may every now and then take more shots into tighter coverage.
