MM's coaching selection = Jimmy Johnson

Hey, I am relatively new to the sport and the Cowboys. Basically been a fan since 2007 when I was a post graduate student in the US.

I only heard and read about the great Jimmy Johnson era. All I can say is your post is very very INTRIGUING. I am really stoked for the new season.

I really can’t believe he’s getting to build his own staff

DC Nolan, ST Fassel, DL Tomsula. All guys with HC experience working units that need work & maybe more discipline

im curious to see who else he brings in

IMO, the only thing that will really impact our progress is how Dak plays and how well we draft this year.. Obviously who we keep and who we lose will make have a huge impact, but who our special teams coach is??? cmon. Will the special teams coach make our punter actually kick the ball higher and deeper? Hell no. The only thing that will fix that is getting a different punter.
The Rams punter Johnny Hekker passed the ball on fake punts more than any other punter in recent history. I wouldn't mind seeing our special teams trying a few trick plays now and then.

I don't like the Nolan hire. At least in the past, he's ran some pretty blah defenses, and defenses in the NFL are having to change now to match the offenses.

Look at Mike Pettine's "amoeba" looks in Green Bay, Belichick schooling the league again with his zero blitzes, the Ravens essentially playing a base 5-man rush package, also looking a bit closer to home, we had Patricia and Zimmer strangle our run game with 6-man fronts lined straight-up over every gap on the LOS... there is some real-deal innovation going on in defenses around the league, and Nolan seems like the kind of guy who's just going to rush 4 and play the same basic coverages on the back end.

Simple can still work on defense, but if you are going to do that, you need to be fundamentally sound. Play your LBs deep Richard-style and give up a checkdown to the RB? Your linebackers had better fly up and stop him. If they can drop him for a 3 or 4 yard gain, you get the 2018 Dallas defense. If they whiff and give up 10 or 15 yards, you have the 2019 Dallas defense.

Anyway, Nolan hasn't coordinated a defense in the last 5 years, and wasn't very good when he did. To be frank, I'm not expecting either innovation nor drillmaster execution. I think it's going to be pretty similar to what we've watched the last four years. As long as Nolan has more than 2 plays in his playbook though, Vanilla Cover 1 and Vanilla Cover 3, I think we will at least tread water relative to Richard.

I watched New Orleans defense this whole year and part of that improvement came from their linebacker play. They rush the passer well, run to the ball and simply just fly all over the field. I don't think that Nolan is a bad coach and won't be running a D that BBDB like we've run before. I'm cautiously optimistic he can turn this defense around.

Tomsula..... fired after 1 season by niners
Fassel....uhm, according to wikipedia, he developer a punter and kicker
Nolan.....in his 3.5 years as head coach he avg about 4 wins

Im not saying these guys cant coach, im saying they will not be the reason we win or lose games. It is hilarious to me to see the excitement. Im all for excitement, but the real reason is because it is not JG. Its like the shiny new toy. All that excitement will be just like when Moore took over the offense. By week 8 or so, how great was the new toy working out?

Dak will be the reason we win or lose. We lost multiple games that were very close. 2 more plays in each game by dak, and we are probable 11-5 or 12-4.

None of the guys you mentioned above are the head coach of this team so I don't understand your point. Just because they didn't do well as head coaches doesn't mean they aren't damn good coordinators and position coaches.

these guys spend all day, everyday watching film. Hell, I could go watch plays over and over of great offenses and copy them. None of these guys are reinventing the wheel. At some point it comes down to a lineman kicking the guys arse that is across from him and a QB that can make honey out of a pile of crap.

Did you watch the eagles game this last weekend? 3rd and 16 for Wilson, the play was called, the defense stuffed it.,.. there was nothing there and wilson took off for 18 yards and a first down. That aint some great play call.
Coaching matters more Monday-Saturday relative to when you’ll have an advantage. Every play call is designed to work on both sides. But it’s instilling the idea of discipline and telling Dak what to look for if the defense comes out in a certain look. It’s like teachers preparing students for a test.

Also hopefully the position coaches hammer details like catching and tackling. That was the biggest reason we lost games IMO. It wasn’t X’s and O’s. Although I am excited to see a more aggressive defense schematically.

Getting Fassel is a pretty big deal in my opinion. Seems like special teams was undervalued under the clapper, and it cost us on several occasions.

I think something needs to be addressed in here and that is the exaggeration of Jerry Jones as a meddler. I always believed that Jerry was not the meddler as he was made out to be by disgruntled fans and some in the media. Just because you are the spokesman doesn't mean you are a puppeteer. What McCarthy stated in the presser was stunning. He not only gets to pick his own staff but also have more decision making ability than he ever had before. I think across the NFL there is give and take between ownership, general management and head coaches. So if McCarthy retains certain coaches currently on staff it is not because Jerry or Stephen insist on it, is because it his decision. Perhaps that was the case with previous head coaches with the Cowboys as well.

That doesn't mean all is well with this ownership and general management. I believe the Jones' are an exceptional family and they do have football knowledge. But subjectivity of working with family members and also their other massive personal and business interests get in the way of developing a consistently competitive football team. There is less accountability and consequences among family members vs. outside hires. You also limit getting more key talented employees. Jerry will be 78 years of age in October. Age does take its toll on your mental faculties and physical well being. You don't have the same energy and stress tolerance. If you look at the last 2 decades, our team has generally been average competing in the NFL. This family ownership hit pay dirt in the no salary cap and free agency era in the early 90s. It got harder to make the best player and coaching acquisition decisions after that. We've been up and down team ever since. Hiring McCarthy is a great start. I believe the same thing should happen with executive management.

What is more important is that the coaching staff were assembled by Mike McCarthy. Not Jerry Jones but by Mike McCarthy.

That is the start of a new era, folks.

Linehan, Dooley, John Garrett, Houck were all with Garrett in Miami. Jason has significant say in who he wanted as his assistant coaches. The lackeys used to say Garrett was in complete control, now they flipped.

The actual basis of the Kiffen/Marinelli hire was because of TOs defensively. Garrett himself invoked Chicago and their TOs in respect to providing his offense more chances.
