I can see a massive overhaul on the Dline, with 1 exception. Maliek Collins. Everyone else is on notice right now. DLAW will either be a stand up hybrid 3-4 De/OLB or be gone. That's the way Mike operates. He doesn't care what name is on the jersey or where you were drafted The best fit will play, period. WATCH out also for a surprise trade or even a couple. I also like Armstrong much better and Joe Jackson if we change to a hybrid 3-4. Armstrong is heavy handed and has huge potential. He flashed at times. Quinn could be a good fit as well as a stand up OLB in a 3-4. Michael Bennett and Mike McCarthy seem like a great match..but I am not sold on fit if we run a 3-4. Gonna miss him if he leaves.

Tristen Hill may actually be a fit in a 3-4 scheme...but I doubt the 2 Mikes will have much patience waiting for him to pull his head outta his arse. He better come ready to ball in camp or I assure you, he's gone. This regime has carte Blanche to do whatever is needed..per Jerry and Stevie. BOUT DARN TIME.

I DOUBT seriously Mike McCarthy will want to trade for Jamaal Adams given he needs players for his scheme. UNLESS its a player for player trade and a mid to late round pick. We simply cannot afford to give away early draft picks. They are too important. This year, more than ever.

I am just so happy we are done with the Tampa 2 crap on defense.

We haven't done much of the Tampa 2 lately. We've been doing much more of the Seattle 3. Before Richards arrives we did more of the Cowboys 1 with man underneath.

There may be some that will disagree with me, but in my opinion, I think it is important to get our defense off of the field as quickly as possible. Preferably, that happens with a forced turnover or a 3 and out. However, if it happens because of a quick score from gambling, I don't think that is a bad thing either.

I think the problem with the bend-but-don't-break mentality is that it rarely creates turnovers and, unless the defense gets them off the field on third down, the offense keeps right on chipping away, all the way down the field. Yes, this method may eliminate the quick score, but all it really does is wear down the defense. So when the 4th quarter comes around and the defense has to make that all-important stop, they are too tired to stop anybody. I would much rather gamble and possibly give up the quick score than to get worn down from being on the field and not have enough gas to stop anybody when it really counts.

Another thing that the bend-but-don't-break method does is keep your own offense off of the field if the defense can't make a stop and get off the field on 3rd down. That limits your scoring opportunities. If our offense is only getting one possession per quarter and the defense is on the field getting gassed, I can pretty much guarantee that the game will end in a loss.
Agree with you whole heartedly and 100! Been saying this for years! If your offense sucks then I understand the bend but dont break....but last I checked the Cowboys know how to offense!

Big DT's and Big hard hitting ball hawking S's.
Something his team has ignored for years.

I hope this is part of the plan.
I just hope we don't expect our guys to adjust to a scheme they don't fit--they are free to change the scheme, but get the players to do that first.

I definitely agree on most points. But what happens when the conservative offense that is supposed to methodically march the ball down the field and score while chewing up the clock gets hit with a 3 and out, and the bend-but-don't-break defense that was just on the field for 10 game-time minutes is right back on the field again, getting worn down for another 10 minutes? I have seen that scenario play out quite a few times with the Cowboys.

I get it... but you stick with the run...

More often than not, Zeke is gonna get 4-8 yards per carry as he absolutely wears down a defense. This is how you win in the 4Q...

It will feel different seeing a head coach inside the warroom during the draft who looks like he is more than just a third wheel. I have almost forgotten what that looked like.
Yeah and Spaulding chumming it up in the draft room...nah..that won't change!

In the past, Will McClay has said that it is really important to understand the Coach's philosophy, and educate his scouting department to find players to fit the Cowboys scheme. Now that Mike McCarthy is taking over as coach, it will be very interesting to find out if the Cowboys rank college players in the draft differently than in the recent past. Which positions will increase in importance, and which ones will diminish in importance? What particular traits will the Cowboys be looking for?

For example, if they intend to run a hybrid Defensive Line, will they look for smaller, faster Defensive End players who can also play standing up and have some linebacker coverage abilities? Going back to 2017, would the Cowboys have been more likely to choose LB T.J. Watt instead of Taco Charlton to play DE, if Mike McCarthy was the Head Coach and Mike Nolan was his DC at that time?

What type of skill set will they be looking for in players in a West Coast style offense vs. the Air Coryell base offense the Cowboys have been running for close to 30 years now?

It is going to be very hard to predict which players the Cowboys will pursue in the draft, and in free agency, and both their Pro Scouting and College Scouting departments are going to need to adjust to the desires of the new coaching staff. The Cowboys have been more successful than most other teams in finding players in the draft due to the continuity between the Scouting Department and the Coaching Staff. They have been mostly on the same page for a while now. With a new Coaching staff, how long will it take for Will McClay and his team of scouts to adjust to the new Coaches, and figure out how to find the players that will be best suited to the new direction the team is taking?
Not sure if anyone has mentioned it yet but Green Bay picked 2 behind us in that draft. Many had them listed as OLB being their biggest need. They trade out of the pick with Pittsburgh and selected Keven King CB. If anything I can remember about the packers drafts lately is the went heavy in the secondary often and either missed or had multiple injury issues with those picks! Anyone know why McCarthy jettisoned Clinton Dix to the skins for a 4th?

It still ate up 2-3 clock minutes and 3-4 real time usually.
Far cry from uptempo inc pass, inc pass, pass short of sticks.

Overall strategy has to be cohesive in all 3 phases. DAL lost that plot last year. Switch to uber-passing attack under Kellen with no special teams and no ball control.
Defenses wilted under pressure and offense came up short when forced to constantly fight losing field position.

The top 6 teams in time of possession made the playoffs.
Dallas was 18.

McCarthy was not a personnel guy at all in GB.
He had no say in drafts.
Not sure if he had any with Dix at all but part of his 'checking out' was anger over GM moves.
