Just my $0.02 here-- not looking at Xs and Os-- just personality for a moment: Is McCarthy a good fit for our team? Bear in mind that teams start to take on the personality traits of their leaders-- and while this is not everything-- it is not an incidental/trivial topic either:

McCarthy is a "meat and potatoes" "football guy" who has been accused of being stale, complacent, lazy-- but also praised for being real, straight-forward, and focused on getting his guys prepared. He is also not afraid to show some anger/heat on the sidelines and loathes dumb mistakes.

I think this is EXACTLY what this team needs at the HC position. They need a no nonsense, non-diva, non-flashy, back to basics "Dad" that keeps things simple, straight, and consistent for the team. Under Garrett-- they were patted on the back if they won, or if they lost. They had a coach who would watch basketball games with them and wanted to be their "friend". They developed a culture of entitlement bc JJ and JG allowed it to fester-- no focus on consistent discipline or accountability.

Meat and potatoes is not "sexy" or "flashy"-- but IMO-- this is what is needed at HC right now in order to ground this roster in the fundamentals of football and execution that is so badly needed. We have an owner that is a showman like PT Barnum. Having a no-frills, no-nonsense HC like MM is a nice counter-balance to that sideshow.

I would think players would respect McCarthy more regardless of his personality simply because he's had success as a NFL head coach including a Super Bowl win.

That's not to say it means more or less with regards to future success, just that players respect winners more so than personalities.

Coaching personalities are what players care about when their team is losing.

I hope they are a reflection of the city he's from, because the Steelers are a tough team just like the city.

We needed someone to manage the prima-donnas on the team that have business meetings at the Star during the season. Getting a sexy hire from the college ranks would have taken time to get everybody on board imo. The roster is hungry to win, but they are also high maintenance. I think he's a great fit in terms of getting our star-studded players focused.

For sure. He starts with the room paying attention and buying in. Plus-- the players have watched how a lot of coaches just lost their jobs-- so they know there are consequences for poor results now more than ever in Dallas.

These changes should result in an uptick in production, focus, and execution this season. Will it be sustainable for years after? Anyone's guess-- but I like the potential of the foundation that is being laid here in the earliest hours of the new era.

its got to be up to him liek Tom Coughlin in NY, either get on my page and become winners, or stay off and drag everyone down.

So far i am liking all that MM is bringing.

A Good coach will Motivate, Discipline, Teach and Monitor.

He starts doing this with focus on the coaches he hires and he makes sure they do it with the players under each of them.

How good he is at these 4 things will tell you what kind of coach he will be......... Time will be the judge.

I just want this new staff to make the players be accountable. The biggest challenge they will have is disposing the country club mentality that exists. They also have to get rid of the star system. Smith needs to practice if he plays. Zeke needs to come to camp and not take himself out of the games constantly. Jaylon Smith needs a technique overhaul. If he can't do the basics LBs do, he needs to sit. Chido needs to act like he wants to be in the NFL. So many of these "stars" need to get a grip.

Lets face the facts, the players showed by their play on the field that they didn't buy into to Garrett's fake facade. They might of enjoyed the the rhythm of the charmin soft culture but deep down I believe they knew they would have to win in spite of it.... There is no doubt in my mind that the players are going to have a much higher level of determination with big MM at the helm just based on his credentials, and the cool thing is, if the players aren't doing their job he has the authority to do something about it.. Garrett couldn't or wouldn't do anything about it because deep down he knew he was the instigator of the problem.

The team personality won't start to develop until after the staff is filled out and they have had time to interact with the players. We'll start seeing some of that during OTAs and then more at training camp. Long way off.

Yes, McCarthy is your guy!

He has that down home, honest, this is who I am personality, of Bill Parcells or Jimmy Johnson.
He has experience dealing with today's players.
He got the record to back it up and the ring.

Can he get the Cowboys to a Super Bowl in his first year? Has any coach ever done that?

Had to look it up.

Don McCafferty was in his first year with the Colts when they won Super Bowl versus....Dallas.

So it has been done.

Has any coach ever taken two teams to the Super Bowl?

We have, Mike Holmgren, who compiled an 84-42 record with two NFC titles and a Super Bowl victory during his time with the Packers. Moving to Seattle he won 90 games, and made five straight trips to the playoffs from 2003-07. His 2005 Seahawks went 13-3 before losing to the Steelers in Super Bowl XL.

And Dick Vermeil, who in 1980 took the Philadelphia Eagle to the Super Bowl. (Don't have to tell you they lost to the Raiders.)
He left the NFL sidelines for 15 years before returning to the St Louis Rams. In 1999 the Rams won Super Bowl XXXIV.
He took a year off, returned the Kansas City for 5 years and took the Chiefs to the Divisional round in 2003.

To borrow a phrase from Jerry, "Everything is in front of this team."

No, you are all wrong. Garrett never lost the locker room. In the last three weeks of the season, they outscored their opponents 108-46. They played hard for coach Garrett throughout the season. Garrett deserved to be fired but you don't have to lie about the players quitting on him.

Good stuff

It is interesting that here in our 60th season, we get a SB winning coach from the team that beat us in our first SB game. Feels like a "full circle" kind of moment. Green Bay started out as our nemesis. Then we became theirs in the 90's and frustrated Favre. Then, with Rodgers at QB-- they have owned us the past 10-15 years.

This move feels like another shift of power back to Dallas as Rodgers winds down and Dak is positioned to step into his prime. No way to predict what is going to happen-- but MM is definitely motivated, hungry, and appreciative of the second chance he has been given. Dak, Zeke, and the core leaders of this team are also hungry and ready to win and wash this taste out of their mouths.

JJ called it "catching lightning in a bottle"-- and while that is folksy or whatever-- there is something interesting about where Dallas as a franchise is right now, and where MM is on his journey as a man and HC. He needs us and we need him. Could be a very interesting few years
