What is more pathetic? An owner that meddles and enables players to be entitled brats? Or a HC that lets himself be undermined like this and doesn’t have enough balls to deal with this issue?
Well for the last couple years he had about 5 million reasons not to deal with this issue. Seriously think about it. Would you be someone's puppet for 5 million a year. Work four years and get 20 million, invest it correctly and you never work again. I can swallow my pride for that deal.

Few players fear any coaches. Players with guaranteed contracts surely don't fear coaches. Some low level players may fear getting cut but not the coach. And if they are decent, even if they get cut some other team will pick them up.

I am not sure I would call it fear, but players definitely don't want to get cut or benched. Nobody has a 100% guaranteed contract so if you get cut that means you might lose millions. Let's look at Zeke's contract: $90 million total, with $50 million "guaranteed", but the reality is that only $28 million is 100% guaranteed. Per another site "If Elliott is on the Cowboys roster on the 5th day of the 2020 league year, his 2021 salary becomes guaranteed. If Elliott is on the roster on the 5th day of the 2021 league year, his 2022 salary will be fully guaranteed."

Said another way, if Zeke sucks in 2020 and we cut him, he will miss out on $45 million out of his $90 million contract. I would say that is a strong motivator to perform. I know $45 million is enough to last a lifetime, and most of us would be ok with "just" $45 million, but for a rich person, $90 million will always be better than $45 million.

My point is that coaches can definitely enforce discipline as long as players believe the coach is really in charge and has the power to cut them. Right now, players can see that MM can fire and hire coaches as he pleases, compare that to JG being told he had to promote Kellen and let him call plays. We will see if MM is given true power, but so far it looks good.

I hope someday they make a biopic about Jerry Jones and how he meddles with his coaches. It would be like a Coen Brothers comedy.

That is a good summary. NFL players aren't the same as college or high school level.. ie they will usually earn more than the coach and they have more 'power' etc etc.. but they still should have respect for coaches and lose a lot if they fall out of favour.

I think also ppl don't realise that most of these guys (ie the ones who actually make it) are often quite egotistical (comes with the territory) and want to be HOF or go out with superbowl rings and accolades. That is strong motivation to perform especially if they think the coach is a help and not hindrance.

I think MM instantly demands more respect than Garrett because he is new (ie likely roster changes) but also because he has 'been there/done that'... also they follow socials etc etc.. they know that right now Jones is pissed and has given the new coach seemingly all power to go and change the program. Right now I think every player is receptive to change and would be well aware that our new HC is clearly in charge. Whether that situation lasts... who knows.

Whatever took place with Garrett will not be the case with McCarthy. He's not a puppet coach. It's why he was given the power Parcells was when he took the job. We cleaned house in our coaching staff and we to do the same with players. Everyone that got paid or is waiting to be paid faltered. This was one of the most frustrating seasons as a fan.
