Joe Philbin’s goal as the OC for the Green Bay Packers is simple. “Making Mike McCarthy look like the smartest play caller in the National Football League. Honest to God. I think that is part of your job when you are an assistant coach or a coordinator or the assistant offensive line coach. I think in that chain of command your job is always to make the person above you look really good.”

He was the interim coach between McCarthy and LaFleur.

Big Mc on Joe, "Joe Philbin (has) great positive energy. It's been a lot of fun. We've taken a little bit of a back-to-basics approach on offense, going back and building the playbook as you would with a first year staff. And Joe's such a great teacher."

"Joe's a perfectionist. He probably had a lot more anxiety than I did because things change, terminology changes."

Good fit. Assistant Head Coach means more responsibility and maybe $$$. It also means when Big Mc is getting his weekly massage Joe is in charge.

It also means he's the No. 2 guy, not offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. IMO, if McCarthy is not calling the plays himself, it will be Philbin.

Generally it’s a title more than a role
A HC could have any asst do any job he likes
Really?

Even if you are the Dallas Cowboy Head Coach under Jerry Jones?

Question to everybody:

Was Jason Garrett given the privelage of hiring his own assistants?

MM is getting his own coaches but the additional title means very little
Asst HC makes a guy a bit harder for another team to steal but doesn’t really change any responsibilities that the HC couldn’t have gave him anyway

Do you think Jerry had ever heard of Kris Richard? Yes Jason was allowed to bring his assistants in. He had a lot more power than people think. He just didn’t have full power that you’d prefer like determining which assistants handle offensive playcalling.

It’s Mike Fisher so take that as you want. What could that role entail?

It does not mean much. Status and probably higher pay.

For the Cowboys it would give OL coach Philbin a higher status than OC Kellen Moore if Moore has or does take the OC job; although the roles of the assistants are defined by the HC and can change.

The NFL changed the rules such that the assistant HC title is meaningless with regards to how it affects other teams that want to hire that coach.

For example, prior to the 2014 season the Cowboys OL coach Bill Callahan received an offer to interview as OL coach and assistant Head Coach from another team. Jerry declined the request.

If the other team had asked to interview him for the Head Coach position, then Jerry could not refuse; although without permission the coach under contract has to wait until his current team is out of the playoffs or has a 1st round bye.

Broaddus said two weeks ago that baltimore wanted to hire Callahan as OC and he would call plays and Garrett blocked him from taking the job because he had the year left on his deal.
