This weekend was emotional. My deceased brother introduced me to RUSH with the 2112 album...we had some great times listening to RUSH including attending a RUSH show together. I had a glass a wine and played the 2112 album loud, very loud and toasted my brother who introduced me to great music and of course to the greatest drummer that ever played rock. When these icons of my teenage youth pass on my brother always come to mind...RIP peace brother and RIP Neil.

My son just told me this. RIP Neil. For my money the greatest drummer who ever lived.

I'll take Stephen Perkins of Jane's Addiction. Jane's music is more complex and intense compared to Rush. But that's me.

I just heard this. Whether you liked Rush or not, he was the best drummer ever in my opinion. I was fortunate to see them live 5 times and his solos were always amazing.

Not me. I prefer the tribal drumming style by Stephen Perkins. Go watch Jane's Addictions '89 tour & his drumming intensity.

You are probably the one and only person in the world that believes that Jane's Addiction has more complex music than Rush, cant believe {a} anyone would believe that {b} have the nerve to post it in a RIP and tribute thread. Go post that gibberish somewhere else, this isn't the proper place.

He was, he had an amazing collection of high $$ sports cars, he was an avid writer and loved to travel between Rush gigs on his own motorcycle instead of plane or usual mode of transportation. When he joined the band he had a huge hand in taking them to the next level.

Look guys. I'm not a Rush fan, but I admit. Neil was an incredible drummer. Best of all time is relative to your own opinion.

People speak of complexity, yet some of the best songs in history are not complex at all. So many three cord progressions are iconic. Complexity does not make you a great musician. Great music moves you no matter how simple or complex it is.

A guitarist or a drummer can have a massive instrument / musical IQ, but that doesn't make him a great song writer. It just makes him a great musician.

You have guitarist virtuoso like Yngwie Malmsteen, but (while it's my opinion) he isn't even remotely near being one of the greatest guitarist ever. The guy can play like nobodies business, but all his music is just a bunch of arpeggios. (he is all technical, not lacks real music creativity IMO) Joe Satriani on the other hand is very much like him, but he is a hell of a lot better musical composer to boot. (though he isn't even in my top guitarist ever)

Some of the greatest guitarist in history "technically" cannot hold a candle to either one of them, but they have written more top songs and made a hell of a lot more money than either one of those guys. Joe Satriani is worth $12M, Yngwie Malmsteen ($7.5M))

Not to mention there are incredible musicians out there that none of us ever heard of. Not because they couldn't make tons of money. They choose not too. You would not believe how many incredible studio musicians are out there because they don't want to grind on tours. Hell, Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin refused to join bands for a long time before he finally joined Cream and then Led Zeppelin. (Watch the Muddy Shoals documentary)

Anyway, as I noted earlier. Opinions are relevant to the holder of that opinion. Many people are a fan of Rush enough to make Neil Peart worth $42M. I'm a fan of Neil's, but I am not a Rush fan. In my opinion (mine), he would have been better served with a different group. Though, I'm not going to complain. Rush has brought a lot of joy to people and that is what music is about.

@YosemiteSam Which groups would he have been better served? You stated the money 42M which needs to be taken into account when you decide which groups. The money is not everything and the music is priceless but anyone would sacrifice some of the music in order to make the money. How much money and how much sacrifice is a different question, but all would sacrifice some of the music for the money. So, which bands would they be?

Eh? You went flying off out into left field there. (this has nothing to do with money) I said his talents (for me) would have been better served with a different group. Why? Because I really don't care much for Rush's music as a whole. Neil was an excellent drummer, but again I don't like Rush's music as a whole. To be blunt, I am not a Geddy Lee fan. I can't stand his voice. It's AWFUL. Replace Geddy Lee with a different vocalist. Maybe we can talk, until then. Nope!

Ok, i thought maybe you had a few bands in mind. I see it's about the vocalist now.

I really was curious about which bands those might be. I personally don't see him being better off in many bands based on timing and money and fame. There might be a few out there but which is the question here.

We can leave left field where it is.
