I think the Commanders or the Giants should draft him. Thank goodness they believe they have their franchise quarterback already.

Let's hope not, my friend.
I think the Giants will be better. The thing with them is
Daniel Jones keeps both teams in the game... lol.

I'm looking forward to seeing what a hot mess the Commanders offense
will look like. They have a great front four on defense but nothing on the back end.

Watson and Mahomes are about to get 35m+ deals

Brady and Brees are at the end of deals and both had earned enough that they took less than market when they signed. Dak, and any other QB coming off their rookie deal, are not going to take cap friendly deals on their first big payday.

Goff and Wentz didn’t do it. Mahomes and Watson won’t do it. Why would Dak?

You can’t compare the final year of a QB’s contract to the first year of new QB contracts.

the final year of Mahomes new contract will likely look like a bargain that year and other QBs will be using that number as a floor not a cap.

if anyone wants to name a bargain bin QB that’s available that you think can get the Cowboys to the NFC championship game, I’m all ears. I would love for that to be the case.

I’m not a Dak fanboy but I am a pragmatic realist.

if someone would trade us a 1st and a 3rd for Dak and we could sign Brady or Brees to a two year 70m deal, I would go for it but that’s not going to happen

if someone can look in a crystal ball and show me a 4th round QB this year that will perform like a top 10 QB in the next two seasons, I’m on board with that.

but, if anyone wants to sell me on a Case Keenum or a Colt McCoy as giving us a better chance to get to the NFC Championship then I’m going to strongly disagree and question their thought process.

I propose we do what the Chiefs do. Here’s why:
Okay. Dak IMO is another Alex Smith. Good against garbage teams. Struggles against good teams. Struggles very badly when the run is taken away or when the defense struggles slightly. Today, we saw what a real QB does when down (Patrick Mahomes). We even saw it last week with Watson against the Bills. Dak has rarely done that. Everyone says he has the 2nd most comebacks in the league but most don’t know that those comebacks occurred during his anomaly of a rookie season.

Anyways, back to my main point. 2017. Mahomes is drafted. However, Smith still starts and Mahomes sits under him for a year. Basically, the Chiefs are giving him a prove it year. He fails to step up to the plate despite having everything going for him. He’s let go. They don’t give him market price, they don’t settle for mediocrity, they don’t fear that Mahomes is a bust. They take the damn risk. We need to do the same. Dak is average. That’s IT. He doesn’t deserve market price just because Wentz and Goff got paid that amount of money (stupidly so I might add).

Also, say we do draft a quote on quote “bust”. I ask, what’s the worst that could happen? We go 4-12 and miss the playoffs? Like we did this year except we went 8-8? What’s the difference? 4 worthless wins that drive down our draft pick? Even so, many act as if we cannot trade or cut said rookie we don’t have faith in. Cardinals did the same to Rosen after he underperformed. We could do the same if our rookie underperformed. Furthermore, what if he plays like Dak (aka, at an average level)? It will actually be more helpful as A. Said rookie QB is cheaper and B. Said rookie QB is younger, meaning he’d be quicker and wouldn’t have as much tape on him.

Even further, we could draft a Mahomes, Wilson, or a more accurate Allen.

We need to take that risk. The only thing stopping us is fear of drafting a “bust” but honestly, I haven’t seen that many busts as of late besides maybe Rosen and Trubisky. Kyler has played pretty well. Allen has played pretty well. Darnold has played pretty well. Watson has played pretty well. Need I go on? Seems more likely we draft an average-great player than a bust. Again, we need to take that chance than to settle for a mediocre/average cap hit QB for 5+ years while our team is still relatively young and in it’s “prime”

You said what I said but nicer so maybe this guy will understand that keeping Dak and his average self isn't the move.

some interesting thoughts. Thanks for the post

here are QB’s taken in the first three rounds each of the past 5 years.

2015
Winston - 1
Mariota - 2
Grayson - 75
Mansion - 85

2016
Goff - 1
Wentz - 2
Lynch - 26
Hackenberg - 51
Brissett - 91
Kessler - 93

2017
Trubisky - 2
Mahomes - 10
Watson - 12
Kizer - 52
Webb - 87
Beatherd - 104

2018
Mayfield - 1
Darnold - 3
Allen - 7
Rosen - 10
Jackson - 32
Rudolph - 76

2019
Murray - 1
Jones - 6
Haskins - 15
Lock - 42
Grier - 100

Of all those QB’s I would argue that only Mahomes, Watson and Jackson are clearly better than Dak

You could make an argument for Goff or Wentz

The rest are either equal to, inferior or unproven

Even then, with the Cowboys likely to draft in the bottom half of the first round, you’re looking at hoping for a Lamar Jackson type of lightning strike because he’s the only QB drafted later than 15 who has a chance in hell of being a franchise QB

Do people like those odds?

Our O-Line is not getting any younger and it’s my position that our window to win a Super Bowl is open for about 5 more years.

how many years are fans willing to risk on a roll of the QB dice that is the NFL draft?

When you have a crap team with a crap history and a crap future you can afford to gamble every year until you get lucky. I mean, why not? Nothing to lose

When you have a decent team you don’t have that luxury

You have to add in the situation that those QB’s are put into. Dak had/has one of the BEST RB’s in the league. Best O-lines in the league. What can be said for these other ‘bust’ QB’s? They were throttled into the dirt. Throttled into a team with a very, very bad defense. Into a team with a poor o-line. Into a team with no weapons. Into a team with no good running game. Look at Dak in 2017. He struggled big time without Tyron. Without Zeke. Without a #1. That’s the position these “bust” QB’s were in. Bring in a rookie QB into our situation and they will thrive because of set up Dallas has overall. I do like the odds. I like the odds of drafting a Mahomes, Jackson, even a Goff, Wentz, or Murray over handicapping ourselves by overpaying an average QB that struggles at the slightest ray of pressure for 5 years.

I think you missed the part where you get those QB’s with the draft picks the Cowboys will have

You are not going to find a Mahomes, Murray, Jackson, Goff or Wentz at 17. Next year? Our pick will likely be in the 20’s

how do the Cowboys land a top 10 pick? To help with the odds of finding a franchise QB, how do we get a top 5?

if you want Burrow this year, where do we get three firsts to trade the Bengals?

next year, where do we get three firsts to trade up for Lawrence?

and those three firsts are optimistic scenarios at best

it’s hard to find those QB’s. You have to have really high draft picks *and* you have to get lucky.

But he doesn’t have to sign a team friendly deal.

he’s been underpaid every year in the league, why would he shortchange himself now?

the bottom line is that every big QB contract sets a new bar. It’s a waste of time to argue against it. Might as well get mad when it rains.

Cowboys only option other than sign him for the 32-33m it will take for a long term deal is to franchise him next year, and the year after, and pray like hell for some kind of 4th round miracle to happen a second time. Lightning striking twice and all

oh, and while we franchise him, expect for him to be unhappy and not report to camp each year because that’s what happens when you tell your starting QB that you don’t think they’re worth market price and franchise them.

During the game yesterday, Dak came on. In a commercial. For a mattress. A middle of the pack QB on an 8-8 team came on TV during prime time. Playing QB for Dallas is a huge bump. Not sure why his agent doesn't get that.

Regardless, when you look around the league most teams are set at QB. Even teams with worse QB's with Dak have young projects they are developing. There is a REALLY small number of teams that would be in the market for Dak at the salary he wants. Him playing hardball could lose him hundreds of millions of dollars.

QB play is very dependent on team. Brady this year wasn't as bad as his stats look. His receivers and line are crap. Tannehill lead the league in passer rating and is in the AFC championship game. He isn't that good but his teammates are. IMO, Dallas' line and offense would make any NFL QB look pretty good.

IMO, Dallas needs to tag Dak and go out and spend real money on a back up or draft a QB higher up in the draft. Let MM sort them out. At a minimum, Dallas needs a better back up than Cooper Rush and if you are lucky, you find a QB who can hit receivers in stride and let Dak go.

The Chiefs and Eagles traded up to get Mahomes and Wentz; the Chiefs all the way up from 27 after a 12 and 4 season where their bus driver QB made the Pro-Bowl. They didn't settle and they had a plan. Jackson was picked with the 32nd pick in the 1st round after Baltimore traded back into the first round. Our plan is to convince the masses that we're "all in" on Dak and he's the future while we're sitting home watching the playoffs because he choked.

Ok, I’m convinced. I didn’t realize it was that easy to find a generational QB talent

so, we trade our 17, this years 3rd round pick and next years 1st round pick to move up to #10

Is that where we can find Pat Mahomes this year?

I posted a list of every QB taken in the first three rounds for the past 5 years.

mahomes and Jackson are pure outliers.

I think that the fans who just say “go draft Mahomes” greatly underestimate the overwhelming odds against that happening

You posted that we're picking at 17 and we won't find a number of QB's you mentioned with that pick or the following year at 20. No one knew Mahomes was going to be a generational talent but teams have a plan to draft a QB. If we need one, we move up in the draft. Where we are picking doesn't help, obviously, but it certainly hasn't kept other teams from making a move.

I mean, we move up in the top 10 to draft a CB that never lived up to his draft status....why not take a shot at a QB?

Yep

Not to mention this entire thread is based on one reporter with a random tweet. How does she even know? Did Dak or McCarthy tell her directly? I kinda doubt it

she doesn’t have a good track record lately

It said she asked him if he had spoken to Dak yet.

If you have Lawrence you wont need a a 100 million dollars tied up in the online or 90 mil tied up in Zeke. It would be worth doing whatever it takes to get Lawrence. You cant put a price on Elite. Even if it's not Lawrence in 2021 let's just say Tua falls to 17 in this upcoming draft. They would be complete idiots not to take him. Franchise Dak for a season while Tua heals up and learns then starts the next season and let Dak walk.

Drafting Lawrence would take a 1-15 season. Which is possible. I see Dak holding out if we tag him and Cooper Rush isn't winning any NFL games.

It’s risky to move up and unless you are moving up all the way to #1 it’s a huge roll of the dice anytime you’re picking the 2nd or 3rd best QB in a draft class

moving to 10 is absolutely no guarantee that you hit on a Mahomes. In fact, the odds tw much closer to zero than they are to 100%

I’m not sold on Tua as being elite. I hope he’ll be really good because I like the kid but I don’t necessarily see him as ever getting to the elite level. I also think he’ll go before 17. If he’s there, I’d be fine with this plan but I doubt the Cowboys are

I don’t think the Cowboys have enough bullets in the gun to get next years #1

we would need to trade this years 1st for someone’s 1st next year and hopefully a 3rd or 4th.

then we would need to trade players, one or probably two of our best, for another 1st next year.

that would give us 3 1st and depending on where they fall, that might get you the #1 overall ... assuming whoever has it wasn’t after a QB.

would that even be enough? I kinda doubt it because our 1st next year will be in the 20’s

For those who want to go out and get Lawrence, would you be willing to pay that price? Is he a 100% guarantee and worth 3 firsts and a couple of our best

Dallas could call the Bengals and offer Zeke, Lawrence, Dak and our #1 for their #1 and we could take Burrows. He is dam good too.

Right.....Just because I don’t like your precious QB . Go back and pray to the football gods at your Dak shrine. Maybe they’ll answer and make him a consistent top 5 QB.

Dallas selected Claiborne with the sixth overall, moving up eight spots in the first round after a trade with the St. Louis Rams. St. Louis got the No. 14 pick and the Cowboys' second-round selection, 45th overall.

just curious what you think it would take to move from #17 to #1?

I could explain, but it's really so simple.
That may too hard for him.
He's been on a really special roll the past week, or so.
And I do mean special.
