I know all the focus has been on keeping Dak, tagging or signing, but a question that keep popping up in my mind is who is the back up? Most new Coaches like to bring in someone that knows their system. only 2 that MM has that are available are Brett Hundley and Joe Callahan of Callahan auto parts (tommy boy joke), and Neither of them have done anything... Hundley got MM fired and Callahan is a JAG. Orange Crush did nothing for me and most of you on this board. so do we spend a top 3 round Pic on backup when we have so many Holes to fill. im spinning my wheels linking about this. we know Dak is here for better or worse so who's his backup?

By the way this draft is top heavy in QB but nothing worth a lick after top 6-7 guys. at least 4 of them are worth taking in 1st or 2nd round and other 2 -3 in 3rd but literally all the tape i've watched on bottom guys are JUNK and should not even be drafted.

FA: are we really going to bring in a Marriota or Winston, that might challenge Daks ego same goes for a Broiles or others that were drafted high.

Give me some names that strike confidence we will have a decent backup in 2020.

Winston may command lower starter money for a desperate team that knows they'll miss out on Tua, Burrow etc...

MM, don't know about, but I'm not sure they'll be willing to spend money on a backup

Good question. It's an area of need for insurance.

Dak will make so much money that I don't see any way they could find an affordable veteran backup.

They'll either have to stick with Rush or draft.

We cannot stick with Orange cRush he's Garretts son and needs to be gone like Dad... We cannot spend a 1st with all the needs, same goes for the 2nd round pick we have too many Holes on Defense and at WR

I expect we'll draft another late round QB prospect or experienced bargain veteran.
the make up of that backup QB depending upon what new coaching staff expects and desires.

Mariota or Winston would be good insurance policies.

With the QB position being...um-um...."the most important position on the field" it would seem you make sure you have someone who can come in and play pretty gooder than just being there.

You shouldn't be afraid to put the backup out there. But that's the atmosphere we've fostered here. Skimp on everybody but the starters. And with an injury you're season goes down the drain, ergo, Romo and Brandon "he throws the prettiest pass you ever saw" Weeden.

Good question.

It maybe too early to see an answer here.

The draft needs to play out and post draft cuts need to clear the rosters.

I don't think a draft pick is an answer.

All of our picks are going to be needed in 2020 to restock the roster with so many open spots from FA.

Now if something comes up they want to act on..

there is always 2021 draft picks.

Not sure how McCarthy looks at that.

Anybody know?

His role as HC in GB combined some roles as a GM there.

So do not know what to expect in that way. But I would imagine his experience would be used.

I agree that the backup QB position is a big need.

Going into a season with just 2 QB's is a mistake too. The starter could go down in week 1, and the team is left with only one player who knows the playbook, players, and coaches. The idea that the team can just bring someone in halfway through the season is absurd, but that's the way the GM thinks. The team has been relatively lucky with only 2 QB's on the roster, but it will bite them in the *** sooner or later.

Depth has been a continual problem for this team, and not just at the QB position. High salaries go to admittedly very good star players, but the cost is depth and special teams.

So if I understand the OP correctly, we are signing Dak for 50 Million, Jameis Winston for 30 Million and then trading four entire drafts for the rights to Joe Burrow.

Training camp will be fun this year.

Maybe someone wants to check who MMs backups were during his time in GB.

Did he want a vet behind Rodgers, or was it a developmental type guy? The name Hundley rings a bell, not sure.

Anyway, when you have your guy and he is young, I see little point to having the same behind him. The backup should a be veteran capable of filling in for a few games so the season isn't completely lost if that happens. 1-2 games is huge in this league and you need to have better than Rush back there.

sign a vet...and draft one late.
competition for Rush and whoever wants to be 3.

I didn't read the part about Dak for 50mill and Jameis for $30mill.
Still $80 mill for the QB position seems a lot unless we can some high school players to fill in the 51 spots. They don't have school on Sunday anyway.

Those guys are going somewhere to start and will want too much money. Think Fitzpatrick, Flacco, McCoy along those lines for backup.
