Sounds juicy. I came aboard class of 98 aka the Chan Gailey season. Skip Bayless mentioned this this morning. That sounds like a great camp competition or was it.

And be honest, who were you pulling for? Was it close competition? Anything you have to say about it, speak on it. How did Jerry feel about it?

There was no competition. Walsh was bad.

I thought the pick that they got Emmitt with was a part of the Herschel deal.

It was a Walker trade pick the Cowboys traded up to the steelers to get Emmitt. The Cowboys lost their 1st round pick by taking Walsh in the supplemental, draft in 1989. The Cowboys via the Walker trade had the 21st pick and had their eye on LB James Francis but the bengals took him before it got to be the Cowboys pick. The Cowboys then traded that pick to the steelers for their 17th pick. Johnson then wanted to take LB Tony Bennett but Jones put his foot down and said they will take Emmitt. Johnson didn't want him because Emmitt turned down Johnson at Miami because they had more of a passing offense and instead went to U of Florida where they did more of a running offense.

And if they hadn't taken Walsh they could have drafted Cortez Kennedy or Junior Seau with the pick it cost them. Imagine one of those guys on the Super Bowl teams.
Walsh was drafted in the supplemental draft

98? So, you're the bad luck guy!!!!!
It feels that way sometimes :(. My first year and make damn near history losing to the cards in the wildcard game. That should’ve been a sign to me... losing to jake Plummer is almost as bad as losing to Tebow

And what happens when you take a pick in the supplemental draft? You lose that pick the following year. Walsh was a 1989 Supplemental, which cost them the first overall pick in 1990. Cortez Kennedy went 3rd and Junior Seau went 5th in that draft.

Inaccurate.

They used the top supplement pick, round 1, for Walsh.
Jimmy recovered nicely but it wasn't a win.
They gave up pick 1 overall in 1991 for Walsh. We would have drafted U of Miami DT Cortez Kennedy, RB Blair Thomas(unlikely as the RB coach LOVED LOVED LOVED Emmitt) or traded down.

They ended up with a 1 and 3 in 1991 and a 2nd in 1992. Not bad at all, but not really great value for the top overall pick.
We got 3 players instead of one. Went on to win a few superbowls over the next several years. I'd say it worked out very well for jimmy. Make that hof coach jimmy.

Think about it, it was actually a smart move by Jimmy to bring in two QBs. It was old school too.

Something like how the Oilers went shopping and brought home Dan Pastorini and Lynn Dickey in the same draft and how the Steelers picked Terry Hanratty and Terry Bradshaw in the same draft.

Put two rookies together and see who wins the right to start. Nobody loses in that deal.

Now a team drafts a QB, says we are going to develop this guy. Couple of years later, they draft another guy when this guy doesn't develop.

Its like giving the kid the keys to the car before he has a license to drive.

Exactly, Jimmy belongs in the HOF but some fans give him more credit than he deserves. Great coach and motivator but the Hershel Walker trade covered a lot of sins like trading high picks for Alonzo Highsmith and Terrence Flagler. The Saints really bailed Jimmy out like you say, or it would be another mark against Jimmy.

The Cowboys gave up a 5th round pick for Highsmith and a conditional 3rd round pick for Flagler. Both were done because Emmitt was holding out. When Emmitt finally reported Flagler was waived prior to week 1 and no trade pick was lost.

Nope.

The team decided that Highsmith wasn't a good fit for new system. On September 3, he was traded to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a second round (#38-Darryll Lewis) and a fifth round (#136-Tim Roberts) draft choice.[2]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alonzo_Highsmith

After asking for a trade, he was sent along with Daniel Stubbs, a third (#81-Craig Veasey) and an eleventh-round (#304-Myron Jones) draft pick to the Dallas Cowboys, in exchange for a second (#47-Dennis Brown) and third-round (#68-Ron Lewis) draft choices on April 19, 1990.[2]

Yes and what neither of those links say is both the psick for Highsmith and and that 2nd round pick for Flagler were CONDITIONAL picks. Highsmith didn't have enough carries and Flager wasn't on the team for week 1 so that one was uncollectable too. Check out the 1991 draft and they show picks that were acquired from trades and you see none coming from the cowboys.

Oh it did which makes it even less reasonable to just be honest.
Drafting Walsh was a huge mistake but NO bailed us out and we came out alright.

Not sure it was the case when Troy wouldn't speak to Jimmy lol.

My bad, I'm wrong. I remember those trades back then and was going from memory. I still stand by the statement that Jimmy was hit on miss on player moves, he had a real advantage in player evaluation because he had known those players since High School. It was something he obviously didn't have with the Dolphins and it showed.

It wasn't a competition. Troy was the number 1 pick of the 1989 draft.
Jimmy drafted Steve Walsh in the supplemental draft with intentions of trading him.
Walsh was pretty good, but his arm was weak.
The plan was always for Aikman to be the starter.
The real conflict almost arose when Steve Beurlein led the Cowboys to the playoffs while Aikman recovered from a knee injury.
Aikman was well, but Jimmy started Beurliein vs the Detroit Lions. Aikman didn't like that at all.
But when Beurliein didn't throw the ball to Irvin on a 3rd and goal with the Cowboys trailing, Troy was inserted to start the second half.

I remember the Buerline controversy. Didn’t they trade him to Carolina? I was young but my memories of Walsh was him looking like a noodle armed scrub.
