TENN: Jurrell Casey, one of the best.
KC: Chris Jones, one of the best
SF: DeForest Buckner, one of the best
GB: Kenny Clark, one of the best

And the rest of their rosters are just full of quality DT's/3-4 DE's. It's just so hard to stop opposing QB's w/o interior pocket push. Our JAG's are not getting the job done. Fix it, Jerry.

This is what was the flaw with Marinelli and Richard, marinelli had his ways and the thought of he can coach anybody up, Richard had this same mentality with S. Dallas now has coaches with totally opposite views of approaching these 2 two spots.

the former coaches had a lot to do with the situation at defensive tackle
Im really interested to seeing how they approach this FA. They have a ton of cap space and cane make almost 20mil more by releasing Crawford, declinging Flemings option and redoing Tyron's deal. He only has a little more than 5mil in guaranteed money remaining. They can lower his cap hits alot. This is what i get irritated about with fans not knowing the structure of the way dallas does its deals. Low signing bonus but Guaranteeing base salries early in the deal. This tyron deal was 100mil and it has never hurt Dallas. Same will be with Elliots as he will still be on his rookie deal base salary in 2020, with 2021 being the first yr of his extension. And they can cut him after 2021 if they want with minimal deal money. Same with Jaylons deal. Dallas has really manipulated this cap.

Yep. And they were all taken with high draft picks. Buckner & Clark were 1st rounders. Chris Jones was a 2nd rounder. Jurrell Casey was a 3rd rounder.

The Cowboys need to prioritize defensive tackles in the premium rounds. I suppose we have in the past, to a degree, because Maliek Collins was a 3rd rounder and Hill was a 2nd rounder. I’d venture to say that our best 2 DT’s in the past 5 years were both undrafted - David Irving and Antwaun Woods.

Gosh, I hope Tomsula can help Trysten Hill. Maybe since we’re getting away from Marinelli’s scheme, Hill can get much stronger and learn to be a space eater. That whole “all DT’s need to have 3-technique traits and stop the run on the way to the QB” crap is too antiquated to work in today’s NFL, imo.

Like you said, we somewhat invested. At DE, we spent a 1st (Taco) and two 2nds (D-Law, Gregory) in recent years. At DT, we spent a 2nd (Hill) and 3rd (Collins). I think it's more about our lack of success and drafting and developing DL talent that has fans frustrated. If we hit on those picks, people would be happy. But it's not like we've been neglecting the DL. 5 premium picks in 5 years, and all we have to show for it is an overpaid D-Law.

I think if anyone can get something out of Hill then it would seem to be Tomsula.

Part of what bothered me so much about Rod was that he'd fight like heck to get "his guys" and then it felt like he'd give up on them shortly after. It's a shame as to how much influence he had in the draft room and how far behind "his guys" set us back after the draft was done.

Maybe that wasn't truly the case but it sure came off that way IMO.

It was certainly the case. Their two biggest misses in the last three drafts were defensive linemen. Guys that Marinelli personally wanted and Garrett backed him on it. Those two overruled their scouting department and we ended up with two busts (at this point).

What's the old saying about winning football championships? You have to run the football and stop the run. Both start on the line of scrimmage. I think a lot of us have been screaming about the interior defensive line of the Cowboys for years. Remember when the Cowboys used to try to get away with JAGs on the OL? They signed McKenzie Bernadeau and Nate Livings instead of one top OG and they got what they paid for. The Cowboys have been trying to do the same thing on the DL for a long time. Good defense starts up front. If there is one change McCarthy brings to the table, I hope it is recognizing the importance of DT and S.

Couldn't agree with you more. I think the cowboys do value the position but overvalue their ability to evaluate talent. They likely think they can find the next Jay Ratliff without investing high picks or big money. Hopefully McCarthy and his staff will change that
I think the inability to evaluate the position on the Dline as a whole is really the issue
We have valued the Dline just haven’t been good at hitting on players

Without question you are correct but are skipping over the bigger picture. Something else littered the playoff teams and that’s quality coaches. It’s not a coincidence that quality coaches would understand the importance of having a stout interior DL that can also collapse the pocket. I will never understand the lack of attention paid to the position for so long especially when it was glaringly obvious year after year on the field. Frustrating doesn’t begin to describe my feelings watching other teams do the things that are obviously better than what Dallas was doing for the past 20 years.

Collins is a better passrusher than any of the guys in the OP except Jones.

Top 10 DT Pass Rush Win Rate
1. Aaron Donald, Rams, 25%
2. Grady Jarrett, Falcons, 22%
3. Chris Jones, Chiefs, 19%
4. Maliek Collins, Cowboys, 16%
5. Quinton Jefferson, Seahawks, 16%
6. Calais Campbell, Jaguars, 15%
7. Ed Oliver, Bills, 15%
8. Denico Autry, Colts, 14%
9. Matt Ioannidis, Commanders, 13%
10. Vita Vea, Buccaneers, 13%
The Bills have to be excited about Oliver if he continues to develop.

He's why they're going to let Phillips go.

I think he was a steal at 9. Can be an absolute game changer.

We spend a lot of our cap on an underperforming o line. Not enough left to spend on d line.
