We have a hard time getting to the SB because of draft position

We don’t play in the weak AFC and specifically the AFCE and we seem to hover at around 8 and 8. We have to bite, scratch and claw our way there and don’t ever have the horses to get over the hump.

For where we are drafting McClay is doing a good job. But let’s look, for comparison’s sake at SF who is probably the best team in the NFC this year.

2019: Drafted 2nd overall - Nick Bosa
2018: Drafted 9th: Mike McGlinchy
2017: Drafted 3rd. Overall : Solomon Thomas

That defense is stout for a reason and the running game is good because of the blocking

On top of that they were GIFTED a groomed QB by The Hoodie for a mere second round pick.

It’s no wonder they are the best in the NFL this year.

We dropped about 5 draft spots because we beat the Skins. In doing so did we not only drop 5 spots, we also ensured the Skins the 2nd overall pick and you can bet that one is going to haunt us for the next 7 years or so.
Drafting has been better than average. Our problem has been dysfunctional coaching.

For instance the win against the Commanders cost us 5 draft spots in 7 rounds (35 draft positions). Is there ANYONE on this draft board that isn’t pretty sure that those 5 spots per round will cost us a player that would have taken instead of the player we actually draft? My guess would be 3-4 players minimum.

Washington was so bad and had half their team that day. Dallas would not have lost if they tried.
It would have been too obvious if they tried to lose. Plus the NFCE was still at stake. Win and Eagles lose, they are in the playoffs.

Wrong - we’ve drafted poorly in the first and second rounds about the past 3 drafts. Gregory, Hill, Charlton, etc. It catches up quick.
Hill should step up this season or you are correct on him. I hear he is lazy.

Gregory was a JJ gamble that really isn’t paying off. Years later and this will be his last chance. Lol

Taco had a attitude problem but since changing teams had as many sacks as our 100 million dollar DE.

draft position has very little to do with our poor results. If we want a guy bad enough, we get him. We simply passed up on better players and got too cute. Take last year, we drafted Tristan Hill. Dare I say more? I'm not a draft geek..but maybe someone on the board can research and see who we passed up when we decided to draft Hill last year. Hill may shine under a new coach, scheme and fresh slate, who knows. I just think we pooped the bed when other players that filled needs were still available when we picked him.

There are a lot of reasons why the Cowboys don't get to the Big Game. I am not sure draft position is high on that list. The Pats pretty much drafted 30 and up through their dynasty and did not seem to effect them.

I posted in another thread, over in the draft zone. It will be interesting to see how MM & WM work together. Will MM have final say so over the positional coaches. As Garrett let Rod and them decide to pass on a real DT or as last year a S.
So will MM over rule some of this. Which indications to me is he will. Based on the fact he is choosing his own staff. So I assume his input will be much larger in the draft.

I think it's more about what he won't do, which is that he won't interfere or override McClay or the scouts like Marinelli and Garrett did with Taco and Trysten Hill. Ted Thompson ran the personnel show in Green Bay and McCarthy was fine with that dynamic. For a long time, building through the draft worked well in Green Bay. I expect McCarthy and Co to focus on coaching and let the personnel folks do their jobs, and hopefully that leads us back to the good drafts pre 2017.

Is this the cause of the Patriots Super Bowl drought over thr last decade too?

I am saying when you KNOW you are out of it and you win a meaningless game or two that hurts draft position you don’t hurt your draft position to feel good for a day. It’s not that hard.

That doesn’t happen every year. But when you know you aren’t going to make the playoffs then lose from that point on. It’s not hard to figure out.

So you are sitting at 7-7, you have to win the last 2 games to make the playoffs but if you lose the last 2 games, you draft in the top 10. You win the last 2 and you draft in the bottom 10... what you trying to sell your team?

There was only 1 year, we were out of it and that was 2015, when we did draft in the top 5. I can't think of another year that we were out of it under Garrett. And just as a coach and or player, you don't throw a game for a draft slot, that's stupid to even to mention.

So this explains the Patriots dynasty and their consistent quality roster how???

2016 was the last very good draft. Since then, there have been far bigger misses than hits. As you said, that catches up quick, especially when you've already admitted your 2017 pick - which could have and should have been TJ Watt - is now a total bust. And 2019's first actual draft pick (Hill) is shaping up to look even worse.

IDK.....there are plenty of teams drafting at or near the bottom every year and do pretty damn good ( Steelers, Ravens, ). We just need to stop getting cute and draft the best players. Stop trying to outsmart other teams coz it's making us look silly.
It has nothing to do with where we draft. For 9 years it had everything to do with not being prepared, and lack of accountability. So let’s call our mediocrity what it is, the inability to coach and scheme.

The talent has been been there, but the team has been a one-trick pony for far too long!

Hopefully MM and his staff changes this ****-show atmosphere!

Nothing is hard when you oversimplify it.

Players aren't concerned with draft position. Assistant coaches aren't concerned about draft position. They are concerned for their careers.

They aren't going to "tank" for you. They aren't going to intentionally under-perform and hurt their own market value so the team, who they may not even work for next year, can draft a few spots higher.

Jags and Browns pick good every year and still suck. Not as black and white as you seem to think. 49ers have fixed their organization from the top down. That’s why they are where they are.

Draft position has little to do with it; drafting positions has everything to do with it.

The Cowboys chose to go for 3 OL in the 1st, a DL, LB and WR (trade). However, the 1st round is the least important unless you score a decade like talent like Bosa. It's the flashiest and most watched and totally overrated. What follows the 1st builds teams and the Cowboys have not been great in the later rounds.

Every team decides on quality vs quantity based on their needs and this year will be no different. The other factor is their board and the draft grades by position.

If the Cowboys were better in rounds 2-5, I would be in favor of trading out of that 17 spot and picking up another 2nd, 3rd and 4th.

The other thing they do is take risks with picks as valuable as 2nd rounders.

Evaluating players is both art and science but the blueprint for building a team is all science. They've been good on the O side but on the D side, they've been very mediocre. Their blueprint was faulty or they didn't follow it because they've neglected to build the foundation just as they did before turning to the OL.

The other thing is keeping the coaches out of setting the board. Marinelli adopts ugly pets and gets Hill that high on the board? The scouts and the player personnel guy, McClay, should set the board. The coaches should only have input on positions they need. NFL coaches do not have the time to scout or watch film on college players, they're the chef and line cooks in the kitchen, can't let them go to the store.

We have evidence that Booger trusts McClay's board because he stayed the course and picked McGovern instead of doing what the others, including his idiot son, wanted to do. Jury is out but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt on that pick as well as the Williams pick, takes some players more time to adjust and there was a time rookie 2nd and 3rd round OL didn't see the field unless there was injury.

It's not where the Cowboys pick, it's who's doing the picking. Be nice if they'd let McClay run the draft just once. I'd like to see what he'd do different but I'd bet he wouldn't take a stoner DE or injured LB or a questionable DT with his 2nd. That's 3 2nds not contributing.

The notion of us drafting well is sold by Stephen Jones himself, and is simply not true. We have not had a solid draft since 2016, which is an eternity in the NFL.

We have 4 offensive linemen that are better than McGlinchey, and Solomon Thomas isn't even a starter. I'll give you that Bosa is a freak of nature though. The most glaring deficiency I see is that they have Shanahan and we had Garrett.
Ding ding ding!!! I can’t imagine how good our team would be if Shanahan was our coach. Don’t think Cooper would be held catch less in a division deciding game.

I get what you are saying but this argument is kind of turned on it's head by a team like the Patriots, who have been drafting somewhere around 28-32 spot for what seems like forever and still keep making deep playoff runs.

I will say that SF did a great job by those picks you just listed.

Take a look at this draft grade sheet from the 2017 first round.
https://ftw.usatoday.com/2017/04/2017-nfl-draft-grades-picks-analysis-results
Look at the guys who were taken 16th or below.

Adoree Jackson, TreDavious White, TJ Watt were all still on teh board at the #18 spot.
Those are top tier players.

We could have had TJ Watt. Instead we took Taco who isn't even on our roster anymore after 3 seasons.

Crazy. But anyways, I digress--my point is, we just need to make better use of our top picks like some other teams do.

By the way--read some of the grades on this sheet. Guy who wrote the article looks like a moron. Gave KC a C- for taking Mahomes at #10, said he "isn't anywhere near NFL ready and may never be".

Meanwhile he gave us an A- for the Taco pick. What a dope

Maybe the main reason of the team being mediocre is the style of management. It was and still very dysfunctional.
The team should be run like an army unit not a cruise ship.
