Sort of. We gave up 3 first rounders to move up to the top spot to get Ismael. When he fled to Canada, we kept the pick and took Maryland.
I don’t recall giving up 3 first rounders?

Wasn’t it just 1 first rounder for Rocket?

Steve Wash reminded me of a really poor man’s Bernie Kosar. Both from Miami, both had black hair, both had a weak arm. However, Bernie was brilliant at scheming and using little tactics here and there to excel. He ended up winning a SB ring!

Maybe he was referring to Dallas having three 1st round picks in the 1991 draft at one time. They traded down instead of using that third 1st rounder.

Here is what it took for Dallas to acquire the top pick in the draft that year:

https://www.prosportstransactions.com/football/DraftTrades/Years/1991.htm

Traded • Ron Francis • David Howard • Eugene Lockhart • 1991 first round pick (#11-Pat Harlow) • 1991 second round pick (#41-Jerome Henderson) to Patriots

for • 1991 first round pick (#1-Russell Maryland) on 1991-04-19

Sounds juicy. I came aboard class of 98 aka the Chan Gailey season. Skip Bayless mentioned this this morning. That sounds like a great camp competition or was it.

And be honest, who were you pulling for? Was it close competition? Anything you have to say about it, speak on it. How did Jerry feel about it?
Old heads? :eek:Old heads?

It wasn't that big of a deal. In the first season Jimmy wasn't 100 percent sure that Aikman was the guy, so he drafted a QB whom he knew from his time at Miami. Walsh ended up being a good backup and quarterbacked the team for their only win that year (against Washington). But Aikman ended up being the guy, and so Johnson sent Walsh to the Saints.

This- exactly. Another note would be Troy was sure to be taking a beating given the state of the horrific OL. I think Jimmy knew this and always intended to flip one of the 1st RD QBs for picks. There was some competition for the job, but Troy was the far better prospect and JJ knew it right away.

A lot of posters have a similar recollection to me - Walsh was the insurance policy that could be cashed in later.

The other reason Walsh was taken was because he knew JJs system. Dallas signed a lot of ex-Miami players in those early days - including many short term JAGs - as its much easier to install a system/way of working when you have a few people who are familar.
