For me, health . Id rather use Blake and Dalton and see how much the TEs will be needed in the new system, if not much, dont invest to much, if really needed, than sign a cheap vet and draft one early next year, or this year if MM wants to. Tho id still rather go safety.
McCarthy uses receiving TEs a ton. Look at Finely and Jimmy Graham. Ebron is the perfect TE that McCarthy likes, plus that will help exploit the middle of the field and allow the outside to open up more.

Now that most of the big coaching decisions have been made and the staff is nearly complete, I've started to take a look at the roster, and the players I would keep and those I would let go. I'm interested to see what you all would do if it were up to you?

  1. I would franchise tag Prescott for this year. Give the new staff a year or so to work with him and then truly decide if he is worth the huge investment. Having said that, I fully expect the team to give him a long term deal instead. $35 million annually.
  2. Give Amari Cooper the big money contract. He's a proven commodity on the field and a safe bet off the field. It will certainly be overpaying, but you signed on for that when you traded for him. $18-$20 million annually.
  3. Pay Robert Quinn. No Cowboys defender was more disruptive and more productive than he was. If anyone deserves to get paid around here, it's him. Don;t let good pass rushers get away. $10 million annually.
  4. Let Byron Jones walk. Good player, great teammate, team guy. Allergic to the football and will likely cost $14-$15 million a year. Just not a playmaker and this defense needs them.
  5. Cut Tyrone Crawford. A no-brainer. Saves you $8 million in cap room that can be used for an actual starter.
  6. Sign DT Jordan Phillips. A huge, mountain of a man at 6'6" and 340 lbs to solidify the middle of your defense. A young player that came into his own in 2019 with 9.5 sacks. Pay Phillips the money you saved by releasing Crawford. $6 - $8 million annually.
  7. Sign Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix to help to solidify one of your safety spots. Bye bye Jeff Heath, thanks for everything. $5 - $6 million annually.
  8. Sign TE Eric Ebron. A former 1st round pick and a high end athlete at the position, much needed in McCarthy's offense. 13 touchdowns in 2018 is no joke. $7 million annually.
  9. Re-sign Randall Cobb. He was worth the money last year and will likely want to stick around.
  10. Re-sign Tavon Austin for the same modest salary as in 2019. I think the new staff and special teams coach will better utilize him.
  11. Bring back Sean Lee in whatever capacity he chooses. If he wants to play another year? Let him play. If he wants to get into coaching? Make him a defensive assistant. The point is that you don't let a football guy and mind like that leave the building.
  12. Dedicate your draft capital to fixing your defense. The offensive side has enough talent and investments and the defense doesn't. While the offensive picks have hit, the defensive ones have missed, so it's back to the drawing board and the draft.
That's my early plan, what do you folks think we should do?
Are you kidding? Dak already proved himself. You are correct to assume the Jones will sign Dak to a longterm contract because they know Dak has proven himself as this team's franchise longterm QB. You Dak deniers sound ridiculous being in denial of that.

As for Ebron, he's overrated. It's cheaper to keep Jarwin and Schultz as the numbers 1 & 2 on the TE position. Maybe draft another TE in the mid to late rounds. No need to overpay for an overrated player like Ebron.

Same goes for Ha-Ha Clinton Dix. How is he better than Jeff Heath? Answer: He isn't. Plus, he would be costly. It would be cheaper to keep Heath and draft a rookie with size, speed and talent in the draft.

Excellent post. This is almost exactly what I would do, not sure about resigning Austin....... although I wouldn't mind it. I think with Smith, Johnson, Wilson and maybe a draft pick we would be good there. Maybe a straight speed guy with great return skills.

I would like to sign and draft a LB. Malcolm Smith would be a decent resigning as I liked his play in the short time he was here.

Only other thing is Ha Ha Clinton Dix I'm not so sure is such an upgrade. A guy like Anthony Harris would be better and/or drafting a guy like Delpit or McKinney.

Great job though, completely agree with resigning Quinn and bringing in Ebron. Doing what you posted would fill all the holes on the team and allow the team to draft best available football players. I would expect 11-13 wins and maybe the conference championship game.

Thanks for the kind words

I'm with you on all of that except Dix.... I just don't see him complimenting our defense. I'm not saying Heath is all that. I'm just not sold on Dix... But other than that, great points...

First off I make the switch to a 3-4.
Cut Tyrone Crawford’s salary in half to save against the cap. If he refuses release him.

Let Byron,Heath, Quinn, & Lee all walk.

Resign Dak, Cooper & Cobb

In Free Agency I sign the following

SS Ha Ha Clinton Dix (Bears) (Former Packer McCarthy guy. Won’t break the bank)

OLB Kyler Fackrell (Packers) Same/GB Guy. Also connection with new LB Coach. 10.5 sacks in 2018. Versatile)

NT Danny Shelton (Patriots) (Finally an affordable big body in the middle. Plug and play NT)

CB PJ Williams (Saints) (Cheaper than Byron. Nolan Connection)

QB Brett Hundley (Packers) Former GB Backup will be familiar with the offense)

Kicker Greg Zuerlein (Rams/New ST Coach connection or Mason Crosby (Another GB/McCarthy Connection)

Draft
1. DE/DT Javon Kinlaw 6-6 310 South Carolina 5 Tech Beast in new 3-4.
2. TE Cole Kmet ND Day 1 Starter
3. Antonine Winfield Jr Safety Min (Woods better get consistent)
4. CB AJ Green Ok State (Depth)
5. OLB Carter Coughlin Minn
5. DT/NT Naquan Jones (Huge NT Michigan St.)
7. Best Return Kick/Punt returner available

That's my early plan, what do you folks think we should do?

1) We need to complete the coaching staff and strength coaches. We haven’t found our new RB, WR, and TE coaches yet.
That’s essential with talking to our scouts and personnel dept. So glad McClay and his group has not been affected by McCarthy changes.
And we have college all star games to evaluate with the coaches, and later on FA and pre-draft workouts.

2) in discussing Cooper within organization, to see if we want to keep/let him walk. If we do keep him, I am targeting Coop with a certain range
figure – and nothing more. He’ll get under the mark of M. Thomas and if impasse, my other options is seek out a new lead WR per draft-trade or FA.

3) I’m franchise-tagging Prescott. If retaining cooper, I’m placing Transitional Tag on him and with a 2nd round tender at that. I think I’d rather vvy for Rams’ Dante Fowler over Quinn per 3-4 scheme fit.

4) I lean more to letting Jones walk and seek out bigger money contract in FA, and we get the 3rd round comp pick a year later, as I want big play factor at CB, target CB within first 1 and 2 rounds, at best- offer Byron a B-tier contract. Solid and will never make big turnover plays.

5) Will need immediate starters in DL and secondary -per FA/draft/trade. Need immediate depth at DL, LB and DB.

6) Target one “splash” big name FA (yeh, right with Stephen jones around ?) Chris jones-KC ..Barrett-Bucs.. DJ Reader-Hou.. Dante Fowler-Rams or re-sign Quinn, B-tiers: Mike Pierce- NT (ravens ) A. Billing-Cincy,

7) I’m addressing TE in draft, if right spot draftee falls’ have to be by 3rd round- while expanding Jarwin. 3rd TE to be address post-draft and camp.

8) Because experience and depth needed in new 3-4 scheme. At best, Lee return at vet minimum as a backup. I’d only be interested in Crawford’s return as a reduced-bargain priced backup. Otherwise likely cap casualty.

9) Replenish depth on OL. Looney likely to be gone, ditto for Fleming as we need a better option anyway. Knight returns and should McGovern beat out Williams, i'm slating CW as my OT/OG utility guy.

10) Get an impact returner/slot in late round, FA vet vs useless Tavon Austin- way too timid and limited to make any use of him

Were we supposed to have one? Nobody told me that we needed to have an offseason plan except maybe watching the Olympics, cooking out a lot and thinking up exciting new summer libations for a brand new decade.

I am planning on taking my boat out more this offseason as well.

If I need a plan, I will go with this. Whatever those morons do, I wouldn't have done that.

if Miami picks a QB high in the draft, I would kick the tires on Rosen. he's never played on a team with our quality offensive line.

I actually like most of this list. Especially being aggressive and going after free agent that can help your team now (Phillips, Ebron, and Clinton-Dix).

Greenbay was suppose to be a "rebuild" this year and they said screw that and upgraded 5 starting positions via free agency and another 2 via draft (upgraded 7 starting position in 1 off-season and now there in the NFC championship game).

1. Give Amari Cooper the big money contract. He's a proven commodity on the field and a safe bet off the field. It will certainly be overpaying, but you signed on for that when you traded for him. $18-$20 million annually.
This is the only thing that worries me. 2 of the 3 last season (2017 and 2019) he has literally dissapeared in the 2nd half of the year due to injuries. Can't say he's safe or proven when he has a track record of both dropped passes and dropping in production when the team needs him. Not sure if that's the type of guy you want to give 3 years of high dollar guranteed money too

My offseason plan typically consists of more time spent following MMA/boxing, DIY projects around the house, more traveling etc on Sundays due to not having to feed my Dallas Cowboys habit.

Beer consumption remains consistent though.
