Comparing anyone to Tom Brady is just stupid. If Dak's number is $40MM I agree it is time to cut bait. I think with Wenz and Goff signed Dak's number is pretty clear - somewhere in the 31-33 range. Years, guaranteed money, incentives all that stuff matters but his annual cap hit needs to be comparable to theirs. Not 20% higher. My knock is the overt haters of the guy. They know who they are. I wish they would remember what the expectations were and what he has done.
I wished I had it now but there was a report some time back that basically outlined it. The Cowboys originally offered him something in the area of 32 I believe, over a period of several years. His agent came back and countered with 40. They said something to the effect that if the Cowboys wanted a long term deal, then the number was 40 annually. They were willing to do something like 35 for a season or two but no more. This is the problem thou. If those numbers are correct, that's a serious amount of money and I look at what has happened with the Cowboys this year and what has happened with the league thus far and I just can't see how it's a good idea.
I mean, we paid out guys this year on big deals and I can't say that any of them really lived up to the contracts, through their play. Zeke probably comes the closest but he got paid like the best back in the league for the next several years and I can't say that I see that out of him. Lawrence and Smith, forget about it, they didn't come close.
You look at all these QBs with high end contracts and most of them didn't even make the playoffs. You got Rodgers still playing, who really is lucky to even be there because the Packers suck, to be honest. You got Jimmy G, who is making 27 annually but is basically on a two year deal, with three options years where the team could easily get out from under his deal and cut him loose and lets face it, Garoppolo is not the reason the 9ers are where they are. It's the OL, the Defense and the running game that has taken them this far. Then you have Mahomes, who is going to get paid soon but hasn't yet and Tannihill, who is playing for 2 million. To me, it's clear that the teams who are competitive over the long haul are the teams who control their cap and have the ability to build the entire team. Not the teams that invested a huge amount of their cap in the QB but didn't have the resources to build the entire roster.
Dak Prescott's agent is Todd France of Creative Artists. Look into him, see how he does business. He also represented Aaron Donald, DeAndre Hopkins, Fletcher Cox and Grady Jarrett among others. Look at all of their deals. They all signed record deals. That's what France does. He will have players sit out until he gets them a record deal. France himself, I think he made something like 45 Million himself in 2018, no idea what he made this past year so he's banking even more then any of the players are annually. I mean, I get it, he gets really good deals for his clients but which of those guys actually helped their team win a Championship this year?
I'm just not about it. I like the guy, I do. I like Dak but I'm not thinking that it's a good idea to wrap up all this money in him without knowing two things. One, what is he going to do in McCarthy's Offense and Two, what exactly is going to happen with the CBA and the new TV deal coming up? I just wouldn't do it so give me the two Number 1s and the cap relief and I'll go find another if that's what it comes down to. This is all about finances to me, it's too risky IMO.
