Define starting calibre-

On a team with no options like ours he is a starter. Te is not one of the better safeties he is just a safety on a team with no other option.
Just because he is a starter doesn't mean he is starting caliber.

A starting caliber players is a player you can start without him being a weakness

The trouble with the Cowboys under the stewardship of Jerry Jones is the inability to churn the roster and make improve. They instead hold on to guys for way too long.

This was his second year starting and his third in the NFL as a 6th round draft pick. He only gets one year?

For those of you who remember the good old days...

Brock Marion was a no-name safety out of no-name Nevada. He eventually developed into a Pro Bowl safety...with the Dolphins.

Give Woods time to develop.

I think two factors work in favor of Woods.

He had a bunch of near-miss plays to make a big play, that will improve now that he has more experience. Who knows by how much, but its likely.

Also a lot of teams could exploit our scheme upfront for running plays. Fix that and teams will pass more, which is more opportunities for Woods to make plays.

Sure, it doesn’t take years to realize that you need better talent and if you can improve why wouldn’t you?

You would if you can get Earl Thomas for a reasonable contract. But with only so many salary cap dollars to go around, most scenarios say you should give Woods more time to develop.

IMO the team was better off with Woods, Cobb, Hyder, Fleming and the rest than overpaying for Earl Thomas and having a lot less depth. There are tradeoffs in everything.

Not really. I dont think will have an issue this year spending short term money. I think you will see a few 2020 starters on defense on short term contracts. Signing a guy isnt going to keep them from drafting that position. The sign Clinton Dix, it wont keep them from drafting McKinney. They sign Billings, it won't keep them from drafting Kinlaw ect...
Yeah but they clearly aren't interested in Clinton Dix or he would've been here for the past 2 years he's been available.

The kid makes sense. Skip "No one feared him" on Garrett.

He's the kind of average player who looks good when his teammates are playing well and looks bad when his teammates are playing bad.

Name any team in the league you want, they have a Xavier Woods starting for them. Woods isn't an asset and he isn't a liability.

Only if paired with a great safety

The Woods Heath tandem is really bad

So when it comes to evaluating talent my two choices are Earl Thomas or Xavier Woods? Am I to understand that there aren’t guys better than Woods but not as good as Earl Thomas?

Where do you stand on whether or not Xavier Woods is a starting caliber NFL Safety
You are what you are. See Hitchens, Wilson, Claiborne, and Ward all former Cowboys playing in the Super Bowl for the Chiefs. Xaiver Woods would start and win for some other team like those Cowboy castoffs. They are what they are...winners.

Sure. Who were they and what would they cost?
