What happened to wildcard teams making the Superbowl?

I can't even remember the last time this happened.

2016 we had our opportunity and it didn't go well for us but I can't remember the last time a 1 or 2 seed didn't make the Superbowl but there for awhile it seemed like wildcard teams had a chance.

There is always a theory on this forum that some on here don't want Dallas taking a week off and want them to stay sharp.

All of that is non-sense and clearly having homefield advantage is more important then ever.

Once your in then anything can happen. Look at the giants. Get hot and healthy at the right time. I didn’t like us resting to much because JG will rest them the last game of regular season and all the way to kickoff of the playoff game and we always came out flat. May have been a coaching problem but for us once we made the playoffs then JG got outcoached anyways...

Green Bay Packers in 10-11 is the one I recall, mainly due to the hiring of Mike.

Absolutely makes a difference, as does the bye.

But let's not forget that the top seeds are also the most winning teams in the conference and ergo...often the best teams.

That theory was developed based solely on the fact that Garrett was a mediocre coach and was incapable of keeping the team ready to play, after the bye.

With a good coach. Yes you absolutely want the bye and the home field advantage.

Well we saw what a team with a bye can do when we played the Rams last year. They looked prepared and we looked tired and out coached. Give me the bye every time.

This is a coaching thing IMO.......how many times we've heard, give a coach an extra week to prepare, he'll do some damage. For whatever reason, this never meant a damn thing to Garrett and his coaches. Time and time again we saw his teams have extra week via regular-season bye or playoff and look totally unprepared.

First Round Bye Teams – First and Second Seeded Teams

The first and second seeded teams each receive a first round bye. Between the two teams in each conference with first round byes there have been 42 Super Bowl appearances in twenty-seven seasons. That means that there is a 77.8 percent chance that a conference champion will be a team seeded first or second in their conference.

https://thegruelingtruth.com/football/importance-playoff-seeding-nfl-football/

This link is from 2017.

A recap here is 77.8 percent of SB participants since new playoff format in 1990 had Home Field byes or #1 and #2 seeds. Pretty impressive despite the exceptions .

I thought it was about 80% but wanted to look it up to be sure.

I think it helps a good coach more than the players
Obviously the team that has home field is likely the better team and that’s how they got home field
But a good coach can take advantage of that week to do some special stuff

BAL had homefield and chose to play their worst game of the season in the first playoff game.

The Ravens didn't choose to play their worst game, the Titans forced them into it with their gameplan and it worked. The Ravens didn't have a counter to what the Titans were doing.

I agree one million percent. Also now that Garrett is gone I would actually not worry about the team being unprepared after a bye.

The biggest thing in mind is getting hot the last 8 games going into the playoffs.
A 9-7 or 10-6 team that hit a wall the first half of the season can get smoking hot late.
