What 3 of 4 conference finalists had in common in free agency

Two words, salary cap. Can't sign a bunch of players in free agency when your money is tied up in your O line, RB and DE and about to be further tied up in your QB.

1000%.......these are the kind hits we HAVE to make.
Exactly. its one thing when its an ET case & someone throws crazy money at him but not to ever even give serious consideration (at least i never heard that they did) is a sin that i hope is behind us.

IMO, unlikely.

I expect new coach means you spend a year evaluating what you've got instead of making a big splash in free agency.
Except this HC had the entire season to watch and evaluate players and I think that's part of what he came with that had them lock him up.

There is no waiting a year with the signing of this HC. This hire was all about now and going for the gold before they have to let some critical pieces walk a couple of years down the road. There is no "two steps back, one forward" thinking with this hire.

If true i would go after clowney instead of quinn

What why? Clowney is as meh and average as it gets. 13 games played in 2019 and 3 sacks. He averages a little over 5 sacks a season. Also he misses games basically every year 2-4 games.

In offseason, KC, SF and GB knew they had strong offenses but knew they needed to be active in the FIRST WAVE of free agency on defense to put them over the top. KC signed Frank Clark, Tyrann Matthieu, Alex Okafor. SF signed Kwon Alexander (after hitting a home run with Nick Bosa in Draft). GB signed Preston Smith, Zadarius Smith, Adrian Amos... If Jerry truly believes this roster is ready for a deep playoff run, we need to learn a lesson and do the same. No more penny pinching this year in second wave. In first wave of free agency, sign a DT, NT, S, and resign Quinn.
Agree only concern, is , is that we sign our own guys too.
Only so much cap space.

This franchise is so keen on betting on their own guys. We have no desire to spend money in free agency. Even though it is proven year after year it is very beneficial to solidify a roster. I would not use this tactic if we were a bottom of the league team. But absolutely would in our position. There were DTs and safeties in free agency the last years. And in the draft. Why can't this front office realize a good chunk of the guys we draft suck?

The Jones boys believe in keeping as many of their own free agents as possible. They will be spending a small king's ransom to get this done once again. If they can get Dak, Amari, Byron, Quinn and Bennett resigned, there will be little cap space left for being active in the FIRST WAVE of free agency.

lol, you need to get out more... and cut back on the kool aid.:muttley:

Says the guy who somehow thinks that his opinion alone means more than actual production and stats.

You need to get over yourself. You're not that important.

It's one thing to not have cap room or feel they will need every dollar to re-sign everyone, but this FO's reluctance (arrogance) to look at and talk to premium free agencies is beyond stupid. Two years ago, they were on a family vacation during the first week of free agency.

Worst Front Office in sports and no I'm not kidding.

OP nailed it. Championship teams are not afraid of or adverse to top free agents.

The issue with the first day of FA is the players are almost always overpaid. The priority with Dallas is their inhouse FAs, plus they don't have critical holes to fill. They probably resign Quinn and Cobb, then they need a 3T, SS and TE.

If Zach Ertz was available you certainly overpay on the first day of FA, but in this case it will be filled with a draft choice or someone like Ebron. Safety will very likely be a draft choice.

IMO the 3T is the only FA question where they might spend a lot of money.

To me our offense would go long stretches during the early to middle parts of the games without scoring. Then put up big yards and points when teams played a little softer on D. Sometimes we would come out and have a great opening drive then stink it up the rest of the half while the other team made adjustments after opening drive.

if they are forced to pay Dak and Amari and possibly jones, good luck with that..lol

KC defense most of the season has been very average, your premise is flawed, they survived because of an unstoppable offense and great coaching..the defense was up and down..i mean they gave up 24 and 17 FIRST QTR points in the freaking playoffs..

how do you figure its fixed..No Mahomes and that offense overcame that defense..sure thy made few plays but no way Sanfrans best move was sanders and that was at the trade deasdline.and GB what happened in the NFCCG?. I get your point but we did pretty well in FA this past year..

I rather go have strong draft and fill in with solid FAs but not overpaid types..it seldom works out..

you forget these teams especially sanfran 4 terrible years that got them a windfall of Draft PICKS.. it didnt happen overnight..how long will they be around, the rams did it then what? sure go try and get some great FAS but you have to be smart about it, dream teams on paper can fail as well..

Fantastic point and another recent example was the Giants 2016 offseason defensive spending spree that netted them a boatload of contract issues, a one and done playoff appearance and nothing else.

They signed Olivier Vernon, Snacks Harrison and Janoris Jenkins to over $100 million in contracts and ultimately suffered greatly.

It's some kinda weird balance to know when to hold em and when to fold em. Timing is everything. Hoodie has proven he's the most adept at it over the years. Both acquiring at a below market cost and releasing a prime player a year early vice a year late.

Even having said all that I'm still straddling the fence on Stephens frugal spending philosophy mainly because of no post season success. So while I cringe at giving away free agent money to players whose performance never match production, Im as equally exhausted with this status quo approach.

Guess I can just stash it all away and put my complete faith in the Jones Family Cartel Hope Strategy Theorem, oh well. Lol.

Unfortunately Jerry already wasted another year to see if Garrett could get it done. Now it’s time to spend. Our window is now.

There is a year's worth of game film to use in evaluating short comings

They have to be the right free agents not just the ones asking for the most money. The two Smith's are getting paid about $4 million a year less than our Demarcus Lawrence. I would argue Lawrence was a high priced Free Agent who was overpaid by a lot. They cannot make any more mistakes like that. Between Zeke and Lawrence they threw away a ton of money and cap space and may never get the value for it.
