On Byron Jones-

"He's a starting caliber NFL corner. He's a really good player. We have to figure out his financial value, and if it fits for us."

Heard that on BTB podcast this morning.

My translation: we aren't paying Jones what the market demands. Say goodbye to Byron. If I go by this quote the temperature on offering Jones a market value contract seems pretty frigid. Up until I watched all of our other CBs flounder this season I was fine with letting him walk. Obviously I have reservations now. That said if I am blaming scheme and technique on the majority of what we saw this past season then hopefully we can get the full potential of Jordan Lewis, Cheeto and Brown under our new staff. I think we will be ok regardless, and if I had to choose I think my preference is to put that money on the Dline anyways. Mods if this has already been covered please delete.

Byron Jones is a very good player, but with that being said, Jalen Ramsey will set the market, do you pay Jones that kind of money, my answer is no, so what market do you pay him is the question.

Probably the market that Philly or some other team sets. I don't believe we will get too deep with Jones. It sounds like we've already been out bid. At least thats my take reading between the lines, but what do I know?

When Jones can do INTs like Ramsey then maybe. Should he be aid well sure but he should be in that tier below Ramsey, Jones might as well be playing with no hands.

It started with Claiborne. You definitely pay Byron. You can’t replace him

So, Stephen thinks he's one the top 64 CBs in the league. Thats some praise! Yeah, no way we are paying him after reading that quote.

Nothing new there, they'd love to keep him...if they can afford him and everything else they want to do.

I look at that D and that secondary and see he's the 2nd best player and the most consistent player on the D. Awuzie and Lewis have not materialized and Brown is up as well.

This all comes down to where do you put your money? Got 5 O players in the top 6 paid at their position, soon to be joined by the QB. Don't know about the WR1 but that would make 7 of the starting 11 on O. 7 to 1 on the D side, that's the kind of balance that misses the playoffs or can do nothing when they do make it.

My translation.. " We intend to keep overpaying over hyped players, there for , I don't believe that we will be able to retain a really good player in Byron Jones at a team friendly deal, because this franchise prefers to over pay the hype".

Time to move on. Is he replaceable, yes. He's not worth a top tiered CB contract.

Offer him middle of the road starter money (15-20 range) and if he won’t take that let him walk.

I like that quote and think it should be the standard answer for all contract negotiation questions. It's a lot better than quoting player X contract as a starting point:(

That was my reaction, McClay is saying they will pay Bryon if the price is right but they aren't going to throw money at him. Its the right approach and McClay is right to signal that going into FA.

I asked this yesterday, when is the last time Dallas overpaid a player? Its either Tyrone Crawford or Brandon Carr, but guys like DLaw, Martin and Dez were given a contract that matched the market rate but didn't go above it.

Between Jones and Cooper, give me Jones. This is a deep WR draft and Booger would love him some WR in the 1st.
What a collossal blunder that will be by Jerry if we don't sign Amari- and I am talking about the trade itself (Loss of first round pick) and the ongoing results of that trade (overvaluing Dak and no player for 3 more years that we could have had with that pick)

I don't really think we should pay Amari top 5 money either as a decision in itself. Are you compounding the error or mitigating it?
