Honestly I can’t wait for Dak to sign or move on. Just so people stop obsessing about Dak’a hypothetical contract with its hypothetical cap ramifications.

Amen. We've had countless threads with the same people saying the same things.

Well, San Francisco did it with Joe Montana and Steve Young. Green Bay did it with Favre and Rodgers. It has happened and it has happened and proven to be a good decision. I am not in favor of doing this if you know what you have at QB and you believe that what you have is capable of challenging for a Championship, year in and year out. I don't know what the Cowboys think there. I mean, they say good things but they haven't really stepped up to the plate and offered that block buster deal. I mean, they did it with Troy. They made him the highest paid player in the NFL and not just for a minute but for a good period of time. They paid Troy 50 Mil for 8 years, dwarfing the previous highest paid player in the NFL, Steve Young at 26.75 for five years. That deal was the largest contract in the NFL for more then just a minute as well.

Cowboys eventually did the same with Tony but not until he proved he could be the guy for them. Now, I never really agreed with this contract but that's beside the point. The point I'm trying to make is that the Cowboys are acting much more like they did with Romo then Aikman. They have made statements that suggest they believe that he will need a lot of support around him to be successful.

I know the Cowboys say that Dak is the guy and that they have no doubts but they certainly don't act that way IMO.

Nice try, apples and oranges. I just read the first sentence, and knew the rest was a wash. Both Montana and Favre, were on the declining years of their careers. Both teams had stallions waiting in the stalls. Not comparable at all.

He's a better option at 15-20 mill a year then Dak is at 35-40..

If you don't understand that then clearly you don't know football.

In fact... If anyone has been paying attention to my QB analysis in the draft zone for years you would think an NFL team should be paying me for my opinions. :)

We all know that there are two sides; the game, and the business. Some don't know the game, and think they know the business side.

all true except Dak is 1-2 in the playoffs he beta Seatle last year..lets not omit the good stuff..

also there arent many Mahomes in the league lets take out 5 teams now compare the league left over to Dak not the elite...those dont come around a lot so not sure what you are trying to imply..

there werent many Bradys, Pmannings, Young's, Marino's, or Montanas either..unfair comp..no matter what Mahomes will make more money then Dak..thats a given..

there typically 28 of 32 teams havig to do it diffently because they dont luck upon a elite QB..

Why didn't he use Baker, Carr, Cousins, etc.... They're all better than Dak, lol.

not true but they are in the same tier and whos better within the tier is subjective..
but Mahomes already an MVP, 3rd year playing in the sb and really he should have got the MVP this year, hes better then Jackson..they need to stop giving these out before the SB..they need to take into account the playoff's..

Back to reality,

yes Daks second tier should get paid no more then 30mil but lots of teams sans maybe 5 all have the same decsions to have to pay top money for 2nd tier qbs..thats doesnt mean Dak sux, simply means the QB market is out of control, less supply, more demand =overpaid Average qbs..

should we do it? I say no but its going to happen for those reasons.. MVP caliber elite QBs are rare regardless where you pick them in the draft they pop up, Mahomes was not highly regarded TT ex QBs have all failed in the NFL, Reid took a flyer and it worked out but even he didnt know it would,, Had Alex Smith to fall back on..hes no genius for making the pick but took a risk and it worked out.. thats rare and how it works..

This is what you said:

"Get rid of proven QB, at risk of retreads and unproven rookies. Yes, this is what a good GM would do."

No mention of age was part of anything. So based on what you posted, those examples are proof that it has happened before.

Cowherd said exactly how I feel. I like him, but I dont love him. Yesterday I got into a discussion about Jeter not being a unanimous HOF selection. I was like, look.... Jeter was very good, but he wasnt the best at anything. Id love to have Jeter playing SS on my team.... but, lets compare him to Rickey henderson. henderson is clearly the GREATEST LEADOFF hitter in the HISTORY of baseball. He has 50% more stolen bases than the person that is next in line. He holds two of the most important records in the game..... IN THE GAME. Runs scored and Stolen bases. Jeter.... uhm,.... he was a rock solid member of some great teams. A sure fire HOFer, but he isnt in the top 40 or so greatest players to ever play.

Thats Dak. He is solid, you can win with him..... but he will never be the QB if you had your pick of any in the game, that youd take in the top 5. UNLESS he gets better. Well do we give 35-40 million HOPING he gets better? Thats the question. I personally would have no issue giving him 40 million(since it aintmy money) if there were no salary cap. But there is.

I like the odds of a QB winning a Superbowl on a rookie contract or an elite QB taking a paycut more then I like an average to elite guy who is making top elite money.

If the highest paid QB's were winning the Superbowl every year this wouldn't be an issue.
Highest paid changes all the time, as does the level that equates to "elite money". Fans like to think of pay as if it should be a QB ranking system with the elite QBs always making the most, but the reality is market conditions at the time a player is negotiating a new contract is the biggest factor. Accordingly, even if the best QB in the NFL were to get the biggest contract, in a year or two a lesser QB will make as much or more because he is negotiating at a different time and under different market conditions. As for how that relates to Dak, the point is that Dak signing a big contract doesn't mean he is getting paid like he is Brady or Brees or Rodgers, it just means he is getting paid as someone negotiating under today's market conditions.

I don't even know if I'd be sad about Dak holding out. I think he is a great person and I want the best for him, but I just don't think he is good enough. If I'm paying someone 40 million dollars he better have an elite physical trait. Dak doesn't have one of those.
Who is good enough? I'm sure if asked that question most would think of guys like Brady, Brees, Rodgers, Wilson or Mahomes. Now, ask yourself how many of those players there are to go around, and what the odds are of getting one if we moved on from Dak. The fact that 3 of those 5 names were drafted between 15-20 years ago proves that guys like that are very rare, and that there is a very low chance of getting one.

Lol oh man..

You think the average zoner doesn’t know this?

What I’m trying to point out to guys like you is that teams aren’t winning championships when they are paying their QB this dumb markets value.

If Dallas wants to be stupid then by all means.. Paying Dak a lot will just crush our odds but maybe we’ll overcome it towards the end of his contract.

I would rather find a short term answer in FA or move up in the draft then pay a mediocre QB like he is elite.

Under today’s market value Dak Prescott is a complete rip off.

You draft Tua if he is there because of his injury and let Dak play on the tag that he would be stupid not to sign the 1st tag. That's another year to see if this $40 million needs to happen. Dak has come out and said he doesn't need $35-$40 million so what's the # they are truly negotiating? I believe they're talking less than Russell Wilson and Aaron Rogers money and closer to Jimmy G,Carson Wentz, Jared Goff $.

Tua gets healthier and develops while Dak plays and if both pan out, you franchise and trade Dak or pay Dak and keep Tua and possibly trade. You're very happy as a franchise at the position.

Cooper you sign. But it can't be, nor should it be more than OBJ money. Offensively we have our core with a possibility of adding to Jarwin at TE and the o-line a year older. Another year of Tyron holding up and then having to invest there. But the offense is set up. The defensive line and backfield is where the draft picks and FA $ needs to go into.

That's fine knowing we have new coaches that are going to need their guys. McCarthy came here knowing what there is on offense and has mostly what's needed to work with along with Moore.

I actually think many don' know this - or at least ignore it - because posters seem to frequently talk about anything in the $30-35MM ranges as paying him like he is an elite QB, and they often argue that he shouldn't get paid that much because that would be paying him like he is elite.

As for guys making elite money not winning the Super Bowls, the price tag isn't what causes them to win or lose, their talent and the talent around them does. That said, of course their talent has a lot to do with their pay, but it still comes down to timing, or in Brady's case, giving a large home team discount.

Look at this year's Super Bowl. One team has a QB that signed one of the highest paying contracts in NFL history a couple of years ago despite having only started 2 NFL games in his life, and the other is a year or so away from signing a contract that almost everyone believes will far surpass everyone else in the NFL. These ARE those high priced guys, but one is a couple of years removed from signing his contract, and another is a year or so away from it. It's just about the timing.

I agree that Jimmy G may be the guy who wins a Superbowl that is vastly overpaid but that team is not a veteran team like ours is so they have a bunch of key guys on rookie deals.

Even if he did win he would be an outlier when it comes to QB's getting paid winning titles. He is not the reason they are there either.

Dak Prescott at 35-40 mill is a rip off. If the market truly thinks he is worth that then I hope they actually let him go out and see who besides the stupid Cowboys would offer it.
