Jaylon Ramsey will set the top of the market, but Byron won't be viewed at the same level. It should boost his price some though.
Yeah that's the problem with waiting for someone to set the market.

Jalen signs for 18-18.5 million and Byron's agent will go "okay he's not Jalen level, we'll do 14.5".

We'll 14.5 is currently only .5 million from the highest paid cornerback right now !!!:eek::eek:

Agreed. I also never thought we'd re-sign LCollins either, but we never got into a bargain war with him. Jones will likely hit the market and be immediately priced out of our range.

That one was a surprise but he wasn't asking for max dollars either. Had he asked for top pay he wouldn't be here. Same with Smith. When they put that statement out last summer before smiths deal they wanted to get a cowboy discount they were talking to guys like smith and byron.

On Byron Jones-

"He's a starting caliber NFL corner. He's a really good player. We have to figure out his financial value, and if it fits for us."

Heard that on BTB podcast this morning.

My translation: we aren't paying Jones what the market demands. Say goodbye to Byron. If I go by this quote the temperature on offering Jones a market value contract seems pretty frigid. Up until I watched all of our other CBs flounder this season I was fine with letting him walk. Obviously I have reservations now. That said if I am blaming scheme and technique on the majority of what we saw this past season then hopefully we can get the full potential of Jordan Lewis, Cheeto and Brown under our new staff. I think we will be ok regardless, and if I had to choose I think my preference is to put that money on the Dline anyways. Mods if this has already been covered please delete.

I think Stephen’s comments were pretty clear.

Jones is starting caliber corner; he’s a good player.

That said, he’s not an elite lockdown corner. He doesn’t travel; he doesn’t create turnovers; ask yourself, when is the last you saw Byron Jones actually break on a pass?

Byron Jones is a very good player, but with that being said, Jalen Ramsey will set the market, do you pay Jones that kind of money, my answer is no, so what market do you pay him is the question.

If he insists on that kind of money, let Philly pay it! Let THEM bankrupt themselves.

I asked this yesterday, when is the last time Dallas overpaid a player? Its either Tyrone Crawford or Brandon Carr, but guys like DLaw, Martin and Dez were given a contract that matched the market rate but didn't go above it.

We WAY overpaid with Tank. He wasn’t anywhere near a top 5 player. That’s most likely another Dez contract.

When Jones can do INTs like Ramsey then maybe. Should he be aid well sure but he should be in that tier below Ramsey, Jones might as well be playing with no hands.
Jones won’t get Ramsey money but he will get more than we likely can pay with the others we have to pay
Jones is good but he’s not Ramsey good and he doesn’t get ints

Offer him 8 million/year, plus an extra million per year based upon his average yearly int rate. Give that to his agent and say you figure out what that is.

I wouldnt even want to pay Ramsey top CB money.
The guy is overrated. He had a grand total of 1 interception all year.
He wasnt even the most productive CB in Jacksonville. Just a big mouth.

But I agree about Jones. I like him and he doesnt give up much. I just don't feel like we are in a position to pay him. If I had to choose Amari or Jones then I am paying Amari.

Byron would be the #1 corner on half the teams in the NFL.

8 million would literally be a middle finger to him (that wouldn't even make him a top 25 paid corner in the entire NFL)

Totally agree. Its easy to say "don't pay that bum" but the last time we absolutely had to go out and get a CB its was Brandon Carr and that was absolutely an overpayment.
Byron is easily the best CB the cowboys have had in the last 10 years and would be the #1 corner on half the teams in the NFL yet cowboyszone will tell you "he's an over-rated bum who can't get the flasy madden type picks"

Good.

I dont want anyone here that doesn't have to be that's been contaminated by the Garrett complacency era.

The culture cant change if we bring back players that are just good enough to lose with.

He's probably going to be the highest paid corner in football or very close to it.

That’s how you speak about someone you are trying to sign. Not this stuff they’ve done.
Agreed. This is how you handle it, NOT like you handled the Zeke situation

Front office: "we already have the money allocaded for him, he's a cowboy for life, Gurley is the starting point price wise"
Zeke: *holds out
Front office: "duhh we have no idea why he's holding out ?":rolleyes::rolleyes:

I don’t think there’s a fan in here who knows what any of our defenders are worth or what they can do.
DL, LB, DB.....they were all hampered by a system that didn’t help them or their predecessors thrive.

Personally, I think DLaw will thrive in a new system if healthy. He has a very good all around game....pass rush, run defense, tackles for loss, and turnovers. I think Jones will thrive in a new system at CB or S, covering receivers or TEs.

I’m not an NFL guy, so I know I’m stupid, but I don’t understand why we let other teams make offers to our FA’s without getting in first. I’ve heard the old saying, “let them test their worth in FA.” I’d know what Jones is worth to me, and I’d offer him the max I’m comfortable with. If he won’t accept it, I’d tell him he needs to come back before the draft if he doesn’t find better, and I’d be planning my moves.

I think some of our DL depth are JAGs, but I do believe most of our decent and above average athletes will show up in a new scheme.

I wouldn't draft anyone on offense in the first 2 or 3 rounds, but that's just me hoping we get a DT and a safety. I think Cooper can be extended at a reasonable rate. There is money to play with.
I see that most fans are wanting to draft all defense in the first few rounds, but the offense was a big problem when it came to scoring against the better defenses that they faced. There was several games that the defense held the opposing offense to a reasonable amount of scoring, but the Dallas offense could not score. The Pats game is a good example along with others. The offense can not score when it needs to. I agree that the defense needs some help, but the offense came up short in a lot of games. The offensive stats looked great, but the offense just didn’t pass the smell test at all. Matter of fact, it was embarrassing to say the least.
