We heard recently that Mike Nolan will continue to run a 4 men base alignment, but will have some hybrid looks in the sub-packages. There has been some rumblings by Will McClay that this staff covets Defensive Tackles with size, which is very refreshing to here. With so many free agents along the DL, who stays, who goes?

Quinn-Stays (He is coming off a tremendous season and is the ideal RE for a 4 man scheme)

Collins/Crawford/Hyder-one stays, 2 go. The team has to keep a veteran in place to groom his replacement
Crawford is still under contract, but the team could save 8 million if he's released. Crawford stays under a reduced contract.

Woods/Covington-One will be retained for the rotation.

I fully expect not only draft capital addressing this area, but some form of free agency.

Who stays ?

DE Dlaw, Quinn, Armstrong, Gregory, J. Jelks, Joe Jackson,

DT Trysten Hill, Daniel Wise

Who goes?..

DE Kerry Hyder

DT Tyrone Crawford, Antuan Woods, Covington, Michael Bennett, Maliek Collins, Daniel Ross
__________

- Dunno about Quinn being “ idea” for the right DE as he is still a subpar run defender, and really fits more as a pass rush specialist than full time all around starter. But he is still easily a double digit pure pass rusher. Even at age 30, there could be serious highest bidder competition for his services in FA. Pass rushers are too hard to find.

- If we lose out with re-signing Quinn, maybe Rams Dante Fowler would be my next guess – although I would looove a chance at Bucs’ edge rusher Shaq Barrett, but he had a banner contract year,
and he’ll be in for an astronomical huge record payday now and Stephen is not doing this record- deal for TWO members on this DL unit.
And I’d bet Stephen jones would much prefer to address that right DE role in the draft with younger players even if we do re-sign Quinn.
As of now, I’d love to have Quinn back , while we continue to seek a young, grooming heir apparent replacement.

- The DL prioriety is seeking out a new 3 tech and a new 1 tech starter, imo. the Quinn status will be huge one to watch too.
But we vastly need difference makers in the interior. Players who change the way we play defense upfront.

- Marinelli always had very little regard for the 1 tech role, while we’ve seen teams value and draft these types from 2nd round to mid round while we’ve entertain bargain binge JAGs from Hayden,
Paea, Thorton, Richard Ash, T. McClain, A. Woods, etc, etc.
And how long have we been searching for the impact 3 tech guy ? Tyrone Crawford, Maliek Collins, David Irving, Trysten Hill ..

Hatcher was our only legitimate 3 tech in his defense and that lasted 1 season. Heard Pauline mention Jerry wants to keep Quinn this off season. Yes, we need to rebuild the defensive tackle spots, although they are going to have to sign a few stop-gap holdovers in the meantime. Javon Kinlaw is the absolute ideal 3 tech that we need. However, probably not going to be there at 17, unless injury concerns are legitimate. As for the 1 tech, I would like to see the team double dip, sign a fa starter and draft another.

Daniel Wise and Armstrong will be staying. They are heavy handed players. Quinn SHOULD be here. DLAW could be on a short leash actually..he has to show he belongs in this new scheme. He's had it way too easy to date. NOW he will be held to a high standard. Its a good thing. Maliek Collins will be gone, Crawford as well. We will try to keep Bennett I think. But that will be up to Mike Nolan and if he doesn't wanna deal with him, then hes gone. Covington is toast, Woods is toast. It will be a rebuild on the dline, all the way across. NO ONE is safe.

lets just say we will be very active in free agency and moving all around in the draft. I think MM will do a solid rebuild, but it may take 3 years. I know its hard to wait that long, but we need to be patient.

After seeing the playoffs this year with teams running the ball and eating the clock. I think you’ve got to stop the run. A DT and NT might look good and give the team direction. Even on of those Ratliff style rush tackle would be nice with Dlaw and Quinn. It’ll prob come down to whose available, maybe they grab OL or LB. WR or returner ability might be nice. Im hoping for some size, speed, or a trade down.

successful teams built from the inside out,PERIOD. Look at the SB matchup. John Lynch built that team from the interior FIRST. He solidified the oline an ddline, THEN traded for a solid QB..then found a running back or 3 lol..then found a couple nice receivers. The rest has been history. You don't build winners from the skill positions inward...not how its been done.

I think the Chiefs will lose this SB game because Mahomes has masked some flaws on the dline. They have one stud there..chris jones. They can be run on often. The niners have the complete team and balance needed to win. Mostert and Samuel will hurt then badly.

Hyder may be two short to play in a multiple front defense. He is strictly a 4-3 player. Too short to play a 5 gap and not explosive enough to play out of a two point stance.

I think goinf forward, we are going to be valuing players that will fit in both odd and even fronts. I dont think it will be the end all be all, but I think it will be a big factor in front 7 personel matters

Nice, I was waiting to see if anyone mentioned the second year players Jelks, Jackson, and Wise. I think one or more of those guys could be solid contributors next. year.
