Philly could be eyeing Byron Jones

OK, but lets look at what and why Philly is looking at Jones, assuming the report is true. Why would they making this move? For the same reason they went after Vincent back in the day. They value the ability to lock up on the other teams WR and take them out of the game. They like that he can match up with bigger WRs and TEs. They like that he also has the versatility to play against smaller WRs. This would be a scheme move. Philly still likes to pressure defensively. Now, they haven't really done that as well as some of their teams from the past, this past season but that's still who they want to be Defensively. If you do that, what's more important? Is it more important to them to have a CB who can make INTs but can't really lock down his assignment or to have a CB who can lock down but doesn't really make INTs? I mean, obviously you'd love to have both right but Deion Sanders CBs don't exactly grow on trees unfortunately so you sometimes have to look at what's available to you.

That, IMO, is what the Eagles may be doing here. A pressure Defense scheme doesn't work unless you have that guy who can go one on one and take one side of the field away. There are two kinds of Pressure Defenses. There is the one where you do it with just a Front Four that can get maximum pressure without the blitz and there is the one where you do it with blitz scheme. The problem in todays game is that those guys who can physically dominate up front and get you that kind of pressure are really expensive to keep. It's really unrealistic to believe that you can have 4 of those guys up front and still afford to pay other positions. Almost impossible really. You are lucky if you can find two and keep them. Hell, we paid a record deal to a guy who gave us 5 sacks this year. I mean, that's how hard it is to find those guys in the NFL. You look at Philly and they have what, Graham, Barnett, Jeringan and Cox up front? Of those four, only Cox is what I would call the kind of player described earlier. The others are good fits in scheme but not really players who are able to dominate against anybody.

They do it with scheme so for them, the CB that can allow them to run the multiple blitz scheme is probably worth it because with out that guy, you can't run that scheme. So what's important to them? If we look at the secondary last year, who do they have on their roster that can fit the bill? I think you gotta context it in terms of what is really important to them, scheme wise.

That's just my opinion.
I dont agree with all of this because Byron doesnt shut down half of the field. He gives up plenty. in 2018 Dallas gave up 5 passing tds in the final 3 games and playoffs. Jones gave up 3.

Well, you can disagree but all of this has to do with scheme, as I said. Did he get beat man to man for all three of those TDs? How many times did he actually get beaten in man and is there a better option out there for Philly, from which to fill their need? You have to consider their position.

I find it pretty funny how many people talk about how loaded our roster is with “talent” yet those same people constantly bash about 75% of our roster (O line, WR and RB being the exception and even then they don’t want to pay them). Almost every free agent article I have read has Jones in the top 5-10 OVERALL yet here we are 10 pages in with lots of people saying he isn’t that good and not worth anything special.

Point being, here is another guy that most analysts and other teams consider very talented yet a lot of our fans don’t. So once again, where is all this alleged “talent” we have when one of our best players is considered to be average?

The WR who shows up half the season and drops balls like hot potatoes? The RB who taps out during some of the most crucial parts of the game? The QB who most people want to let walk or pay barely above a scrub?

Either this roster is extremely over rated, which is my opinion, or there’s a lot of fans that say we have one of the most talented rosters in the league but can’t point out more than a handful of players (outside the O line) which every team can do.

It's weird for sure.

The only reason to not bring Jones back is because you just think given our cap situation, where our money is spread, it might not make sense to pay him a potential elite level contract for a CB. But to say let him walk because he's not that good? LOL.

And I am one that believes we have a "talented" roster. Not the most talented, but certainly better than the results of the last few years. I'd say we are arguably one of the top 10 most talented teams in the league. Granted, that could change quickly with FA and us losing guys like Jones and Quinn and replacing them on the cheap with slop.

Agree. I don't think he's worth elite money, but he's a good player.

IMO, Quinn is more important to keep than Byron. The type of disruption he provides is rare, and he'd really take off w/ NFL quality DT's

If he's a good player you can bet the Eagles will be interested because they not only don't have a good player at CB they don't have a guy that can stay healthy more than 3 games in a row.

And if they want to overpay a good player, we need to let them instead of sabotaging our future.

If I'm the Cowboys, I tell Byron straight out that we want to keep him if he'll play for around 8/season. However, paying him 15 ish will cost us dearly in the future. That sort of money needs to be reserved for game changers.

Tony Pauline is reporting that word down in Mobile is the Eagles are looking to revamp their CBs and Jones and Chris Harris are two names they are in on.

On one hand, I see the logic in us not getting into a bidding match for Jones. But on the other hand, having him in Philly would make them much better at an area of weakness.

I am generally curious to see what we do with Jones.
I'm haven't checked but I dont think the Eagles have a lot of cap space.

8 mil wont buy you much when it comes to a decent CB. I think a fair offer would be more like 12 mil with incentives.

Then why would they be interested in him?!
Either they really do want to try and sign him and they can fit him in under the cap with the other 14 FAs . Or they want to drive up the value and make Dallas have to over pay if they want to keep him. Basically they are always trying to weaken the Cowboys team.

The Eagles are not a blitzing team. No idea where the narrative came from but Jim Schwartz has never been a blitz heavy DC. He will dial it up to protect the DB”s but all things being equal he wants to rush 4 and play coverage.

They are interested in Jones because he’s the best combo of age and skill on the FA market.
