I can honestly say this is the first celebrity death that has truly effected. Watching Kobe was one of the highlights of my youth, I watched him play from the age of 10 to 30 (damn that’s hard to believe) and just LOVED his game. I’ve always been a Mavs fan but apart from Dirk he’s my favorite player ever. I always felt he was the continuation of Jordan after MJ retired.

And now as a parent, I can’t help but feel awful for his wife. What a horrible thing to deal with. Not only losing your husband, but your child in one fell swoop. I honestly don’t know how I would go on.

I legit shed a few tears over this. It’s just unimaginably tragic.

Anthony Bourdain’s suicide hit me hard too.

yeah I took a few hours and spoiled my 13 yr old daughter to anything today. She chose ice cream. Best hour of my week.

Yup. Gave my 2 year old extra cuddles in the rocking chair before putting him down.

You just never know when it's your last day on Earth.

These Twitter posts with more victims being released is hard to read. Especially the ones where two kids lost both their parents today. I can't imagine that

David Bowie for me, huge influence on my musical taste growing up.
I was about 12 when John Wayne and Elvis died. Back to back summers, if I'm not mistaken. But, the one that hit me hard was Keith Whitley. I was about 23 years old and he was in his prime, atop The country charts. Died of alcohol poisoning. He was around 28 years old. Google him if you've never heard him. Listen to the song, Don't close your eyes.

Unfortunately, the pilot screwed the pooch on this one. Continued in subpar conditions without filing an instrument flight plan and flew a perfectly good helicopter into a mountain.

WASN'T THERE FOG?

These are the 2 weather observations around the time they crashed at Van Nuys Airport:

METAR KVNY 261851Z 00000KT 2 1/2SM HZ OVC014 13/09 A3018
RMK AO2 SLP218 T01280089=
METAR KVNY 261751Z 00000KT 2 1/2SM HZ OVC013 12/09 A3016
RMK AO2 SLP212 T01220089 10122 20111 51010=

2.5 miles of visibility, haze, and overcast at 1300 feet. Visual conditions are 3 miles. He requested a special VFR clearance, which allows you to fly down to 1 mile visibility, which isn't smart in mountainous terrain. If he just flew on an instrument flight plan, they would be alive.

Sad when it’s massively dumb and avoidable human error

SOUNDS LIKE PILOT ERROR SO FAR. I am interested if there was engine issues tho. That might explain him asking to go down lower.

Kudos to Mavs owner Mark Cuban who has announced that Kobes' No.# 24 will be retired among Mavs jerseys.
That's a tremendous tribute to a player that wasn't a Mavs' history player.

RIP Mamba, man you will really be missed.
