I’m not a fan of this idea. I don’t think it does anything to increase the quality of the product on the field.

get it down to two preseason games and I might listen
Get it down to a coin flip.

Just do not let Dak call the flip.

"The coin has 2 sides men..

one side is heads, the other side is tails.

Mr. Prescott, call it in the air.

And its heads, Dallas wins the toss.Mr. Prescott what do you choose?

We will take the the ball and defer to the second half and I will personally take $35 mil/yr for 5 years.

Mr. Prescott, please go sit down."

To me all his crooning about wanting to be a Cowboy his whole life AND that he is so interested in winning in Dallas is getting more and more hollow.

Knowing he is asking so much money that will effect the team's ability to pay the talent around him will be crippled..

my eyes are seeing more clearly what's up with this guy.

I know you guys must have picked up on this..

but I was wondering what you guys thought about the fact that there is discussion about increasing the regular season from 16 games to 18.

Additionally there is interest of reducing the pre-season games from 5 to 3.

I guess this will really gain speed when the TV contracts are up for renewal.

But wonder what you guys think about this and how does this effect the game.

One thing to me is it will increase rosters to help teams last that long and help keep play quality high.

Other observations?

Thanks guys.

The CFL has been playing 2 preseason games and 18 regular season games for years. Teams also get two bye weeks.

So far it hasn't killed anyone.

18 game schedule, more meaningful football to watch.
A team that get hot at the end of the season will have a better chance to get in.

Add 2 playoff teams in each conference. So no bye weeks I guess, or maybe they can still work that out some how. 10 teams are too many. But the top 2 seeds would have a bye week. However that means there would be some 8-8, 7-9 teams in the playoffs and that is just not right

so I gives leave the playoffs the same.
.
And for those that say it is too much football, too saturated. Then don’t watch. LOL.

they need to eliminate thursday night games or rework it so teams only play the game coming off a bye, excluding the Thanksgiving games

First off with the exception of the 2 teams that play in the HOF game, teams only play 4 preseason games not 5. Second, the NFLPA would have to agree to this and they're going to want another TWO FULL pay checks added to every contract for each year and that would no doubt put teams in cap problems to I'm not going to hold my breath on this.

The NFLPA was already opposed to adding a 17th game. So I have no idea where you are coming from with this post.
Yeah and they are asking for some concessions with stuff like weed testing. I see the owners saying you want that, we want 18 games. If it makes the owners money, and it will, Its going to happen.

I expect 17 game season.

I agree. 18 games is being put out there as a negotiating tactic with the NFLPA before compromising with 17. The end point will be something like the following:

17 game regular season.
2 bye weeks.
3 preseason games.
A couple of extra roster spots e.g. 56 man roster.

More flexible IR rules to allow players be removed and returned to active roster if they are injured for a few weeks.

17th game will be at a neutral venue overseas - capiitalise on demand and generate more income. Plus it means teams dont have to give up a home fixture. They have been working on this plan at the European end for a while and want to diversify - Brexit adds additional risks re London.

I recently heard Boomer Esiason say on his show (the guy is fairly dialed in to the league) that he expects a 17 game season and two playoff teams added in each conference.

Each team will play one game at a neutral site like Portland, San Antonio, Birmingham, etc, while opening up many more dates for London and Mexico City.

I would think each division winner would get a bye.

This comes down to billionaires wanting even more, and Goodells only job being to figure out how to do that. They know the preseason is garbage, but owners dont want to lose one single gate, so that has to be made up.

Yes, two byes also.

The owners have wanted SB to be played Presidents weekend and that'll push things to then.

I dont like that part of it. December cold in the North is one thing, but February cold is something different.

Too much football for me.

Not to mention it would skew the stats even more than they already are.

I think 2 of the pre season games is about getting vets some snaps but vast majority of pre season is about backup players and rookies who need the snaps to get ready for the season. I think moving beyond 16 games would be a mistake.

I truly don’t understand why adding 2 games is such a hurdle?

4 preseason games is a joke and not necessary with year round training. And with declining viewership due to new technology streams it’s inevitable at some point the league will need to add games to continue demanding similar money from the networks .

And since the biggest chunk of players salaries is from TV revenue it’s just a matter of time.

Not going to happen.
The players are gonna want a lot of money to play 17, and 18 even more
On top of many other concessions from owners
Obviously more games mean more money but It means more wear and tear on their bodies
Shortened pre season makes it harder to get a big part of your roster ready to play
I know viewership is not as high for pre season games but they are an important part of building a roster and your depth
