Sorry, it's not getting 'fixed' at this point in his career. The guy is allergic to the football.

2 interceptions in 73 games. One from an end of the half Hail Mary against Tampa Bay and the other off of a pass that Sean Lee tipped. That's pathetic.
It is pathetic but do you expect a corner to get picks when they don't turn their head? It is fixable, turn your head and the picks will go up. When it's not fixable is when corners do turn their head and still don't get the pick. For years now the secondary has been taught to stay with the receiver and not allow him to get behind him, keep everything in front of you. No jumping routes or anything. Not saying he will turn into a pick machine but to start getting picks you must turn your head. I bet you anything you want Jones will have more than 2 picks in a single year if he does that.

His quote from Aikman echoes exactly what I've said about not re-signing Jones. Quarterbacks aren't afraid of corners who do nothing more that cause incompletions. They're afraid of the guys that can actually take the ball away. Let another team mistakenly pay $15 million a year for a non playmaker.

Force an incompletion on 3rd down and you take the ball away.

If a QB isn't scared of losing a series to a 3rd down incompletion because it doesn't show up on his stats like an INT, that's on him.

I'm not sure about that, but that's coming strictly from an availability perspective. I don't know if there will be enough available options for the team to replace 3 out of 4 defensive backs.

Given his experience with his new position coach, I could see Donovan Wilson winning the SS spot, but I'm not sure if they will have the resources to start two entirely new cornerbacks in 2020.

I'm thinking Byron will def have a replacement via a free agent or draft and Awuzie will have to earn his spot considering how bad he played.

I get the need for turnovers, but I wonder how much emphasis will be placed on good old fashioned tackling. I’ve seen too many of today’s players whiff on the tackle because they were focused solely on knocking the ball out. I get the need for aggression, but IMHO, it’s a thin line.

That and the fact that none of them took that next step forward under Richard that we all though they would. They either stayed the same or got worse.

I think it was about them than scheme although Awuzie struggled with being targeted while teams mostly avoided Jones. Teams adjusted to how Richard wanted the corners to play, attacking the weaknesses of the scheme.

It will be interesting to see what Nolan will do differenr coveragewise and if he truly will cater the scheme to the personnel.

He is who he is at this point. He doesn't even THINK about going for the ball, even when he DOES see it coming. I've seen the guy with his head turned around, seeing the ball coming, and his decision is to knock it away.

Go tell Troy Aikman.

My thoughts as well. I'm guessing that unless a great DT like Kinlaw somehow falls to us (doubtful), I think that 1st round pick might be a corner.

Agree 100%......make sense. Sounds like Mike wants as many playmakers as possible on his D. He's not interested in players just doing your job, especially if you're on a huge 2nd deal.

That's my feeling, you pay and invest in playmakers, not guys who are just solid. It's funny that the team and fans will lament the fact that they don't get turnovers but then fans want to invest huge money in the poster boy for not getting turnovers?

This doesn't come from a position of disliking Byron Jones. I realize that he's an excellent cover man and a smart, team guy and solid citizen. In a perfect world, I'd love to have him back. But things aren't perfect, this team can't pay everyone and they have to prioritize. And some team will ultimately pay Jones more than he's worth.

Well said.......he's the kind of players who's done EVERYTHING the right way, except getting interceptions (lol).

I'm not arguing to keep him or not, I'm ok either way. These coaches know if they can coach him, because it's a decision type thing, or they know they can't coach him. If the latter is the case than he is gone but if the first part is true than he will be resigned.

Other than that, I understand your argument and it's a good one but at this point I will agree to disagree.

Fair enough. A very respectful and well handled disagreement.

Kudos!

I will believe we will get more turnovers when I see it... we have had a ton of DCs over the years, and we just have never excelled in this part of the game.

yup ,
A ton of DC's under Garrett , same result each year .

The last D I felt was a threat to turn it over was when Roy Williams and Woody were patrolling the secondary.

Back in the day before his game fell off a cliff— Roy just had a knack for making impact plays (and tackles lol)
