Mike McCarthy did not hesitate to surround himself with experienced and respected assistant coaches after arriving in Dallas. This mindset was on full display when McCarthy and the Cowboys front of...

If we could just be avg on returns and coverage it would be huge
He has lots of tricks up his sleeve but those are rarely used in the great scheme of things
Just improve coverages and returns is gonna be a big improvement and really help the offense
The fakes and stuff is like the icing on the cake

The difference between average on punt returns and where Dallas was last year is less than 2 yards. Kick return was worse but, in both cases, the sample sizes are so small that 1 return skews the numbers a lot.

The idea of the Cowboys special teams being a huge problem is wildly overblown.

They were last in the league in return average with Randall Cobb, Tavon Austin, and Toy Pollard on the roster. That's not overblown and is a big problem. The lack of preparedness on special teams was one of the more sickening aspects of the Garrett tenure. From kicker to kick returns it was the crap that just kept on giving all season.

It was a part of the problem
We had the worst starting field position in the league
Some of that was no turn overs, some the defense rarely stopping teams deep in their territory but some was ST
We had the worst or close to it in almost every catagory

Rick Gosselin ranks special teams play annually based on 22 individual categories. It is about as objective a measure as is possible. The Cowboys ranked 31st in 2019, 27th the year before. This is meaningful. It isn't just a matter of having a poor return game. It requires poor performances in returns, coverage, penalties, turnovers created and surrendered, etc. Considering the number of 1-score games the Cowboys lost, being nearly in the basement in special teams play is significant.

I thought Special Teams did pretty good in the loss to the Eagles. At least they put all our points on the board

We had the longest percentage of drives in the league. Overblown don’t think so. Special-teams is a major issue
