McC: If Witten wants to coach, he's best to start at the bottom rung

There are a lot of players who you can tell when they are playing that they will make good coaches. I agree that I'm not sure Witten is one of those. I haven't really seen over the years where he's been coaching up the other tight ends as a player, sharing with them the nuances of the position that he's mastered. I don't know if that's because he didn't want to (which I'd have a hard time believing since he's a team player) or he doesn't know how to teach.
Agreed.

for me, I think he could very well be a good position coach but I’m not sold on him being a good head coach. We’ve never had to see him do anything along those lines other than be “passionate” and being a HC takes a hell of a lot more than that.

Logical, but sounds fairly condescending... I’m willing to bet “blogging the boys” bungled that quote. And there’s always the possibility that Witten is a savant type who could coach right away, however unlikely.
If he shows himself to be a savant he should move up the ranks rather quickly IMO.

Per Blogging the Boys
FIFY
"So here's the thing. So Witt needs to understand...if he's going to get into coaching, he needs to start as a grunt Gnat" being he wants to follow Garrett.

huh...

Glazer spoke about the Cowboys hiring process and noted that the team actually initially wanted to hire a defensive coach.

“Originally the Cowboys owners wanted a defensive coach because they wanted to keep the offensive staff. I’m like, don’t do that guys. And I talk to the Joneses about it. I said don’t do that. You get yourself in trouble that way. Get a leader of men. Get a guy who’s going to formulate the attitude of your team. This is who you want.”

Then why did he hire Kellen Moore as his OC? He was given a shortcut.
.
He's not the one that initially hired KM to this coaching staff as the QB coach. Now KM has that plus a year as OC under his belt and McCarthy likes what he has seen. McCarthy isn't being a hypocrite by keeping KM at a position on the coaching staff that he has already proven he can do.

Witten is not a proven commodity as an NFL level coach. He needs a couple of years to prove himself like KM did before he would be comfortable putting him in charge of a department. There is nothing wrong with that what-so-ever.

Silly opinion. You start at the bottom rung when you have no other choice. I see Witten starting as a TE coach b/c that's obviously what he knows. Personally, I think he would have more value as a college coach b/c what young TE wouldn't want to be coached by Jason Witten? He would be a recruiting bonus for any school that hired him. Demarco Murray was just hired as the Sooners RB coach.........same deal for Witten as a TE coach.

Damn he must not think much of Witten as a coach right now. He said quality control guy...not even a position coach or assistant position coach
well, that would be the bottom rung. in learning what the quality control guy does, it would seem to be a great place to start.

I would not be shocked seeing Jason being named TE coach in college ranks.

I think Witten is smart enough to realize that..........was he offered the "bottom rung"?
