I have zero personal feelings toward Jaylon and all the respect in the world for him coming back from that injury. But he was flat out awful against the Vikes and Packers. This play vs the Vikings is a perfect example of how not to play mlb.

There are dozens of plays like this from the course of the season. Jaylon has no feel for run fits - and that's been true since day 1. On top of that, he has no idea how to stack and shed, so he's really easy to block. He's a great athlete and can make plays when he can run in a straight line, but other than that, he's not good. That's always true, including 2018.

So there's some threads and posts floating around that are flat out ludacris. A guy just posted that Jaylon is an embarrassment to the organization so I feel compelled to offer you this:

Player A: 144 tackles (81 solo), 0 sacks. 2 ints

Player B: 142 tackles (83 solo), 2.5 sacks, 1 ints

Player A is Luke Kuechly
Player B is Jaylon Smith

Jaylon had the 6th most tackles in the entire NFL (3 solo tackles behind league leader Bobby Wagner; largely regarded as the best LB in the NFL). Jaylon also had .5 less sacks and the same number of INTs as Wagner.

To say Jaylon is an embarrassment to this organization is an embarrassing thing to say - the guy isn't even in his prime yet and had to deal with idiots like Robert Quinn not being able to stop the run or screens to save his damn life (the guy had 26 solo tackles in 2019). Quinn was sack hunting the whole season so he could get a big contract & it compromised this whole defense (especially the LBs - in my opinion). I get some of you are in love with Quinn because sacks (the most overrated thing in all of football) make people fall in love with players. If I'm the Cowboys I couldn't get rid of Quinn fast enough & this Jaylon Smith slander needs to stop - it's ridiculous.

Nice post, but there are a lot of simpletons here in the zone. I doubt that seeing stats is going to change their opinion. Kind of like politics.

No matter exactly where you stand on Jaylon, the fact that there is this much debate indicates his play & his personal conduct leave something to be desired.

Those examples are exactly what I mean. He is as blockable as a 200lb FS and not a 240lb linebacker. He gets caught in traffic and is unable to stand his ground let alone make a play on the ball carrier.

I've stated time and time again the Jaylon hate stems from him being his own man and trying to create a business and company. They like their players to shut up and tackle and bash their heads in.

That guy has some growing to do on the field but this team did him no favors.
He probably would be more of a "Meathead" football player if he didn't absolutely wreck his knee his final college game. What he went through there brings into focus life after football mantra most of these guys don't get because they think they are invincible and they will play forever.

First I’ve heard that take on Quinn. Interesting point. I’m curious if others agree or if there’s some data to back it up. But I’m intrigued.

Good post.

Good post.

Quinn isn't good against the run. He is smallish which makes it tough for him to shed a run block and often times rushes himself out of the running lane.

Note that Wagner's tackles are inflated. The scorer in Seattle is notoriously liberal with giving out tackles

Both Jaylon and LVE had let down seasons. Looking at the 18 season compared to 19 they both seemed lost at times or too slow to react.

They channeled their inner Bobby Carpenter when taking on blocks all year long.

Was it inflated egos, poor coaching, coaching conflicts(Richard-Bloom-Rod) or simply offenses studied them and found some ways to exploit them?

I agree that Smith isn't an embarrassment to the Cowboys though.

Even simpletons can have actual game film to back up Jaylon's struggles. Here is 183yds worth.

LVE stunk it up too.

Yes, that was by far Jaylon's worst game of the season, but if you go back and watch that whole game the Vikings ran left A LOT (Robert Quinn's side)

Also, I've been watching Lebron James since he was a senior in high school and 1 out of every 15-20ish games he doesn't play well at all - that's just how it is.

This isn't a post saying Jaylon is perfect or the best - I'm just saying he played better than most people think [and are giving him credit for]. I also think he's going to be really good this year (especially if he can get back to his natural position)

My concern is threefold - his unwillingness to take on a blocker, his tendency to overrun the play, and his inability to plant and reverse direction. When he has a clear line to the ball carrier he is fine. But if he has to make a tackle in a fray he is blocking meat.

Agreed on Quinn. He is a liability against the run with his smallish size and tendency to rush himself out of the play. Armstrong did the same thing when he was in there for Quinn.

Good post. Considering both these guys looked amazing two years ago, and like total crap last year, I'm willing to chalk it up to poor coaching.

They don't have that excuse this year, between Edwards and Nolan, so this is a prove-it year for both of them.

Come on, man. Those are all Robert Quinn's fault.

One thing I'd like to add is Jaylon is only 24 years old and he's entering his 3rd season (I'm not counting 2016 because he didn't play). I'm a realist - so if he doesn't improve on some of the things you guys are pointing out (which are indeed real issues) in 2020, with a new coaching staff, then the front office needs to adjust accordingly.

Thank you all for your input; good, bad, or indifferent.
