Or to draft a crappy QB and have a team that sucks for several years in a row.

there’s a reason teams pay QB’s what they do. The reason is, that having a poor QB is almost a death sentence for your team for multiple seasons. Unless the rest of the team is astronomically good.

You just described our team

Dak can choke on that franchise tag as far as I'm concerned....Take it or leave it. We can find a QB....especially in this years market.

If someone wants to give us 2 #'1s for him....you can have him. Hell....I'd even save us some money by slapping him w/ the transition tag...

People need to quit listening to the media ...And right now....It looks like Jerry is seeing this for what it is....and is willing to move on if this gets out of hand financially.

Good for him...

So, as the media reports come out that the Cowboys and Dak are heading for the franchise tag, and talks that the Cowboys and Dak have reached an impasse on the size of Dak's deal, and with news that Dak may (or may not) hold out if he is tagged...

I am starting to believe these are the facts:

1. The Cowboys are going to pay Dak. The only question is what is the market value and can they can get Dak at that value.

2. Trying to negotiate with Dak now is starting to get pointless. They are negotiating against themselves and what Dak's agents believe Dak to be worth.

3. Dak, despite what he has said, is seeking max value and is offering the Cowboys no discounts.

4. Dallas has the cap space to sign Dak to whatever deal is reasonable.

Therefore, while risky, I think I let Dak become a free agent and just bid on him on the open market. Yes, there's a risk Dak will leave for another franchise but only if that team pays more than Dak. So, what is Dak worth on the open market? 35, 40? Who knows, but let's find out and pay him that if the Cowboys find it reasonable. It doesn't appear that these other methods are getting us any discounts.

Non-exclusive franchise tag. See if anyone will bite and give us picks for Dak. Interview available QBs to look for alternatives.

I find it hard to believe we could not improve the team with our 1st round pick plus 2 more for Dak . Draft a QB who we have a total rookie contract window to try and win with , Now having an NFL coaching staff to accomplish this task with and use the 40 mil on FAs to improve the team . That would buy a safety , DT and what ever else that needs replaced along with signing our guys that we want to keep

:hammer:.......Honestly I think you could get up 1/6...and take Herbert....and it would maybe cost you next years #1. Then you recoup that pick by trading off Dak for something down the road.

The biggest problem is that, while we certainly don't want to overpay, what are we gonna be left with if he leaves?

I'd tag Dak for the year. Meantime we are in dire need of a backup QB regardless of what Dak does. Hire one QB and draft another.
I don't believe Dak will hold out and lose a large amount of money, but if he does then you still have 2 QBs.
But assuming he doesn't hold out, we'll see how he works out with McCarthy.

Pick 17...

But, I will bet money that Dak's endorsement contracts have an out clause in them for the advertiser. I am betting being a Dallas Cowboy is part of the contract.

If they offered him 33... he is still making more than Wentz and Goff. These guys act like it has to be in the football contract, too look cool or something.
I really don't get what is so hard to grasp that being a Cowboy has it's benefits.

Well yeah, if you draft a piece of garbage. What I'm basically saying is if you're already not doing so well, what do you have to lose? The Steelers and Bears went 8-8 with crappy quarterbacks. The Titans went to the AFC championship game with a 9-7 record and an average QB. What are the options for those teams? It's not like Dallas risks falling off the map. They're off already. I'm just saying, for the money Dak is asking Dallas could sign a lot of players and take a chance with someone else. Is Dak worth losing Byron Jones and maybe a few others? I'm just not sure the alternative is any better or worse.

I don't wanna use our first round pick on a "maybe" QB. We need defense. With a good enough D, I think Dak can help take this team all the way.

If the Cowboys would put the 2020 version of the Wentz or Goff contract on the table, I believe Dak will sign such a contract. Dak would have signed the 2019 version of the Wentz or Goff contract but the Cowboys are the ones holding up the process by not offering such a deal.

Instead, they want to lock Dak into a long term contract at the current market rate. There is no way in hell Dak is going to sign such a contract when he has spent the last 4 years being wholly underpaid. If the Cowboys would just give Dak a market rate QB contract, I think Dak signs immediately.

Reality, please!!!
No team in the open market will give Dak more than 20 million a year.
Even Jerry and Stephan talk roses but till today only thorns on the new mega-deal for DAK.
Don't overthink this its plain as a sunny day...they have doubts on Dak and come this off-season expect surprises!!

Now for you Dak-Employees insult away but aren't you curious why the WORST GM in the NFL has not given this young man the BIG BUCKS?

Find another QB where? Do they go on trees? Are they easy to find?

There will be free agents this year worth looking at and there is a draft every year. Ever heard of it? The team just reset with a whole new coaching staff. I’ve got no problem at all if the team decides the best direction is finding a new QB instead of paying $35 million a year to a guy worth about half that.

Classic example of putting all your eggs in one basket. Very similar to the Zeke comment, ".. the straw that stirs the drink", the Cowboys have been openly vocal about resigning Dak. In essence, they seeded a considerable portion of their leverage to Dak already.

If you assume (as Jerry does year in and year out) that the Cowboys are on win now, SB trajectory, then they must sign a veteran QB that can step in and play in the event of a Dak hold-out.

Alternatively, they could and should draft a QB in the first three rounds. Many draftniks are projecting up to 4 or 5 QB's going in the first round. I think there will be a panic run on QB's as there often is, meaning a really good player could fall to us in the first. We could probably grab a decent send tier QB in the 2nd or 3rd rounds.

As much as I would like to see Dak signed and all this drama behind us, I could live with Dak leaving provided there is a legitimate Plan B. Maybe with MM there will be.

Right now the market value is based on Russell Wilson which is $35 million. Tennessee is already been said to have offered Tannehill some $33 million so if anyone thinks Dak is going to take less than Tannehill, that's just crazy.

would you mind providing any evidence of that, please?

Thanks.

If the Cowboys were to just let Dak test the open market there is no certainty he would give the Cowboys the right to match any other offer. If teams thought that, they wouldn't bid as much or at all. For him to get his best offers he would have to take the highest bid from a team he would be willing to play for, and not promise to give Dallas a chance to match.

So it's that easy to find a QB in the draft or in FA? That can play and lead a team? I'm sorry but we got lucky drafting Dak. If they didn't want to pay Dak 35 mil they should have signed him last off season for 33mil
