Where should Dak’s salary be?

Tannehill and Fitzmagic arent on rookie contracts.

But you highlight an interesting issue. The price of 2nd contracts is so high versus rookie contracts, that it may be easier to go with a rookie contract and spend the saved money on improving the team elsewhere. A lot of rookie contract QBs are playing SBs these days.

Tannehill and Fitzpatrick are not the market trend. Both were considered backup QB. Neither player would be guys teams would try to build around.

Most people outside Dallas would put Dak in their bracket.

No some here would say. Most covering the NFL with no bias one way or the other do not see Dak as a backup QB. Some Dallas fans do but then Dallas fans have always been quick to attack the QB when they are not winning championships. I know what the market price is for starting QB and that is likely what Dallas will pay and that market value around the league is not going down

The market will decide Dak’s value. It doesn’t get more fair than that.

The Cowboys forbes ranking turns out to be a albatross in contract negotiations.

Dak has decided he wants to the the highest paid QB in the league.

So the numbers start there.

Jerry coddled Romo and he's making the same mistake with Dak.

Expect the recent results on the field to continue.

Whatever they finally give Dak, its going to be more than they would have had to give him before the beginning of 2019. I also think if he plays another year without a contract, it will cost more to sign him in 2021 than in 2020. Just sayin'.

Dak should get about $35 million, but I understand why there is hesitance to pay him that. If Dak did not play so poorly in the Eagles game in December, I think a lot of people would not be having doubts right now. I have those doubts too. The Eagles game was a disaster for Dak and its not that I want to judge him on 1 game, but several of last 5 games were sub-par for him. I'll give him a pass on the Patriots game because the weather was miserable but I won't give him that much of a pass. A $40 million QB has to play well in bad weather too. I can't have my QB falling apart in a game in NY or Philadephia when the division or playoffs are on the line in December because its drizzling.

At the same time, the price of QB goes up every year. Pay Dak $35-40 million now and it will look like a bargain in 2 years. I would love for Dak to be reasonable, but I get why players can't be.

Its a simple question. Are the Cowboys willing to part with Dak? And if so, what is their backup plan? Dak is not worth $40 million. No way. I would only give him that if the guaranteed money was $40 million and I had a way to get out of the contract with minimal cap impact should Dak not improve over last season. Dak is never going to sign a deal like that though. This is why I would put the franchise tag on him for one more season and see how he plays. If he refuses to sign his franchise tag deal then I guess Dak has made the decision for me. At that point I trade him for the best set of draft picks I could get. If no one will give me 2 #1s for him then I guess the leagues is telling us what he is worth.

Market has changed. There are starting QBs earning less than 10m a year.
Mahomes is earning less than $10 million/year, but that's only because he is still subject to his rookie contract.

Im in the move on camp. New coaches, new system, new era. His and other Cowboys FAs familiarity with Garrett's playbook is no longer a reason to stick with the incumbents. It may even be that FAs from other teams are more familiar with and better suited to the new coaches.

Not just Dak. We need to be careful about all of our FAs. And because we're looking to change the culture, it should be "when in doubt, chuck out".

Where is the evidence Dak has decided he wants to be the highest paid QB in the league? The only thing I recall is him saying he does not expect that and that he doesn't feel he has the right to that since he hasn't won a Super Bowl.

Easy - $35m. That's roughly the same percentage of cap as Stafford.

Stafford and Cousins' contracts becan in 2018, with a $177m cap. Stafford at $27m - ~15% of cap. Cousins at $28m is ~16% of cap. $35m next year is ~17.5% of the cap. A bit bigger contract than Stafford and Cousins is exactly where Dak should be.
This. 35 is the right number

And for the people complaining about how much cap thats taking, Watson and Mahomes will blow that out of the water and competently reset the market. They will likely extend after the new CBA and TV deal. Deals like Daks and Wentz's will look like bargins.

last year stafford was the highest at 30.1

the highest average was wilson at 35

Dak turned down 33 according to CBS and wants 40

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/...ion-per-year-offer-wants-40-million-annually/

That would make him the highest paid QB in the league

if he gets highest QB rate I think that would be a signal that the cap is going up due to more games.

the highest paid qb not to make it to the Super Bowl is Kurt cousins at 28 million per year.

you then have bissett, stafford and Carr all in the 25-28 million per year range.
Carr is so overrated. He took the Raiders to the playoffs one time after his only good season. Raiders gave him a huge contract & hasn't been back since. Same with Wentz. One good season, he got paid and poof. Tell me there's not a trend.

Wherever he wants it to be. It seems he has a blank check with winning not being part of the criteria for pay.
