Sounds like he's been doing the right thing the past few years.

If true, can pass a physical, and willing to sign incentive-packed and affordable deal, I say why not.

Always remember the 3 questions every Front Office/Personnel Department should ask themselves when considering a player to acquire:

1. Is he available? Yes
2. Is he affordable? Seems like he would be.
3. Does he makes us better? Would need to work him out, but if he's stayed in shape (sounds like he has) than IMO he's better than Dorance Armstrong, Kerry Hyder, and Joe Jackson.

P.S. Jerry loves his reconciliation projects.

I've learned never say never, though it's been observed that very few players with this kind of lengthy, extensive substance abuse issues have overcome them to a straight and narrow.

But pure talent wise Alden maybe an eve more superior athlete and explosive edge rusher as even Randy Gregory.

Some team is gonna follow up with him and do their due diligence homework on his current affairs and rehab to see if its genuine, ..and take that low risk-high reward situation.

if they hit home with him in terms of legit rehab and they gradually get him back into shape, then they hit the jack pot with him and have one of the league better edge rushers.

My hope is Quinn comes back or we get a legit pass rusher in the 1st round and Randy Gregory returns.
I think that’s what happens to be honest. We may even get Irving back if the NFL let’s go if it’s weed policy. What I am wondering is when the new CBA is put into place and the weed policy is gone and we get Irving Gregory back if we re sign Quinn and draft Kinlaw this year how will that DL look? I think pretty scary.

Its going to be interesting to see how Free Agency goes because as of now I think we almost have to trade up for Brown or Kinlaw. I don’t see any way around it.

Hold on was he that bad? I thought he had substance abuse issues. Greg Hardy was a whole different animal.
from his wiki

On January 28, 2012, Smith was arrested for driving under the influence in Miami Beach, Florida.[27][28]

On June 30, 2012, Smith was believed to have suffered stab wounds when attempting to break up a fight at a party at his Santa Clara county residence. Two other people were shot in the incident.[29] On October 9, 2013, Smith was charged with "three felony counts of illegal possession of an assault weapon" relating to the stabbing incident. The charges were later reduced to misdemeanors.[30]

On September 20, 2013, Smith was involved in a single-vehicle accident in San Jose, California. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and possession of marijuana. After the loss to the Indianapolis Colts in the third week of the football season, he voluntarily entered a rehabilitation facility, to be put onto the non-football injury list with an indefinite leave of absence.[31]

On April 13, 2014, Smith was detained and arrested following an incident at the Los Angeles International Airport in which Smith became belligerent and uncooperative with a TSA agent, who alleged Smith claimed he was carrying a bomb.[32] After interviews revealed that Smith did not clearly state he was carrying a bomb, the Los Angeles City Attorney decided to drop the charges. Smith was suspended for nine games for the 2014 season.

On August 6, 2015, Smith was arrested in Santa Clara, California, for an alleged hit and run after driving under the influence, and vandalism charges.[33] He was released by the 49ers the next day as a result.[20]

On March 9, 2017, Smith was a passenger with a friend driving to Smith's house at 12:00 AM, when the San Francisco police department found out both Smith and the driver were under the influence. Even though Smith was not the driver, both Smith and his friend were detained by the San Francisco Police Department for questioning. The next day, Smith and his friend were released. No arrests were made.[34][35]

On September 23, 2017, it was announced that Smith had agreed to plead No Contest to Hit and Run in the 2015 incident in exchange for the DUI charges being dropped. He was sentenced to 20 days in jail. During his sentence, he was ordered to attend a treatment facility, and undergo anger management classes. After his release, he was disallowed from entering any bars or other establishments where alcohol is the primary commodity being sold.[36]

On March 3, 2018, someone called the police from Smith's home and reported that he had consumed multiple bottles of tequila and then bit her wrists. Smith reportedly fled the home before police arrived. San Francisco police did not comment on the specifics but did state that domestic violence of a "non-lethal" nature had occurred and they were seeking out Smith for questioning about the incident.[25]

On March 23, 2018, Smith was arrested for violation of court order, where he was ordered to stay away from a woman he assaulted earlier in the month. The woman was revealed to be Smith's fiancee. This picked up from a previous incident that occurred on March 3, where Smith pleaded not guilty on four misdemeanor counts, including domestic violence, assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, false imprisonment, and vandalism.[37] On April 8, 2018, Smith was arrested for violations in conditions to his bail.[38]

On June 10, 2019, Smith was stopped by police in Mission, Kansas for a traffic violation and later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Is that the only DV on his record? If he has been sober for a long time you look past the 400 DUI's. You can't look past DV and never should, but this sounds more he said/she said than what is normally called Domestic Violence.

And going to an airport saying he has a bomb.

Aldon is as guilty as Hardy was of DV.

Is he good, or did Justin smith make him look good

Maybe Aldon made Justin look good. Joking. Justin was a very solid player, but he really wasn't ever stellar. He was steady and produced pretty much at the same level every year he played, which are very good qualities in my opinion. I wouldn't mind a Justin Smith level player in Dallas for a decade, but fans here would definitely complain that their DE can't total more than 8.5 sacks in any season. The 2 Smiths made a good duo for a very brief time in San Fran.

Aldon has not played in 3 years. I would have no expectations from him. Even if he is past his off field issues, he would have to get back into the rhythm of playing in the NFL. That could take a long while.

“Aldon’s great because Aldon’s been working out with our [military veterans] in our MVP program every single Wednesday night,” Jay Glazer said.

“Aldon has been sober for a while and he’s been helping a lot of our vets with their sobriety.”

Aldon Smith was one of the best defensive players in the NFL before the substance abuse issues and domestic violence allegations caught up to him and pretty much derailed his career. These problems and a hit-and-run incident in 2015 ended up earning him a one-year suspension from the league. That’s last we’ve heard from him… until now.

If what Jay Glazer says is true and the 30-year-old DE has indeed turned his life around, teams around the league would probably jump at the chance at adding a talent like Aldon Smith. It’s not very often these WAR DADDY pass rushers become available, especially one that could be had rather cheaply.

HELLO DALLAS COWBOYS!!!

The Dallas Cowboys could be looking for more defensive end help with the possibility of Robert Quinn leaving via free agency. It’s still possible Quinn could be brought back if his asking price isn’t too high, but that shouldn’t stop them from trying to add Aldon Smith to the mix as well.

Aldon Smith proved to be one of the best pass rushers in the league during his short time in the NFL. Not only did he accumulate 19.5 quarterback sacks in a single season, but he also racked up 47.5 in just 59 career games. And guess what… most of his success came under the tutelage of Jim Tomsula, the Dallas Cowboys new defensive line coach.

Jim Tomsula was Aldon Smith’s DL coach with the San Francisco 49ers from 2011-2014 before Smith’s eventual release. Tomsula should have firsthand knowledge about not only the former All-Pro’s talents, but his character as well. If Smith has indeed turned his life around, the Cowboys new DL coach could be the link that brings his talents to Dallas.

This is total foolishness. Aldon Smith hasn't been reinstated yet and the possibility of that with ANOTHER DUI just 8 months ago seem extremely unlikely to get reinstated for this coming season.. Then there's the fact that Smith hasn't played a down since 2015, that's 4 going on 5 seasons. As much help as the Cowboys may have on the defensive line to take up a roster spot (if he were reinstated) for someone that hasn't been able to stay out of off the field problems for more than a single year is wasting that roster spot.

I’d rather kick the tires on him than throw money at Vic Beasley

If he's reinstated by the league, I'd have no problem signing him for a vet min as a back-up. Interesting Glazer is vouching for him. Remember he talked Jerry out hiring a defensive coach. Hmmm.....so if gets reinstated, where you think gets the first crack at him? Just me, but there's nothing to lose bringing him in for a workout. If he checks out fine, vet min.......I can cut just as fast as I sign him.
