Are you aware that Nolan was the Ravens DC in 2003 and 2004?

Are you aware that he was the wide receivers coach prior to that, and he inherited the defense from Marvin Lewis and already had pro bowlers all over the place?

There's a reason nobody has asked him to coordinate their defense the past 5 seasons.

But we'll see.

Scheme is much easier to control and implement. There is no salary cap with coaches.

Talent is way more variable and therefore valuable IMO.
Good point. Also, what good is talent w/out the proper coaching?!

I like Nolan.. It's an unpopular opinion but I think he'll be really good but losing Byron is going to make things more difficult on him.

Anyways.. We have to build a dominant defense.

Not a defense that is ranked high because we didn't allow yards. That measurement is stupid.

We need to be dominant with Points allowed, Turnovers, and QB pressures.
Hopefully we resign Byron to an affordable contract and add some studs to our D this off season.

Gonna wait and see on Nolan. Can't be any worse than last year.

"McCarthy was Nolan's offensive coordinator for one season in 2005 before getting hired as the Green Bay Packers' head coach, which is a job he held for 13 years."

This is why Nolan was hired.

Big buddies.

"Prior to taking the head job with the Packers in 2006, McCarthy, of course, was hired by Mike Nolan and served as the 49ers' offensive coordinator for one season. And now that he's back in charge of an NFL team, McCarthy reportedly will return the favor and hire Nolan on his own staff as the Cowboys' new defensive coordinator, according to NFL Media's Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport."

You mean Marvin Lewis' defenses? Nolan was the wide receivers coach prior to that.

I'm pretty sure anybody could oversee that defense that Lewis and Newsome built at that point.

Nolan was Ravens DC as well.
Took over once Lewis became HC for Bengals. Ravens still maintained a great defense.

sounds like your standard NFL merry go round

Nolan just has to create TOs at an average rate - I'm not expecting th 93 Cowboys

This defense will be in major flux. maybe we get some guys cheap, maybe we hit on 3 or 4 draft picks. Right now our backfield would get torched if we played today.

Ok. I'm not saying the Cowboys are better than the Chiefs.

My point is just that you don't need to have great talent at every position on defense. You can win with journeymen types on that side of the ball and Dallas doesn't need this huge talent infusion on defense.
We are in dire need of an infusion of talent on our D. This past season cemented that fact that we're running on fumes.

Maybe, nothing’s guaranteed. Not the right place perhaps? The GOAT of coaches, Belichick, was a flop in Cleveland. We’ve seen how many players who seemed like JAGS—they get in the right situation and boom! Pro Bowl!

Can we hold off on the doom and gloom until they at least play a down or two?

Sure I'm aware of Nolan's NFL coaching resume or I wouldn't have posted anything. I'm confident that he'll help to build a formidable defense provided the front office doesn't handicapped him/them like they did the previous regime.

It will not happen in a year or two and I worry were all the money will come from to pay the D side. Listen to some folks here you pay pretty much the whole Offense all top 3 money, QB top 1 or 2 and they will tell you no problem the money is there. Jerry and many fools here believe this offense is really a number 1 offense and that will win the day.

thats his job.

But the previous NFL teams tried that also.

Didn't work out too well.

No way to ignore his coaching history.

Is he just going to suddenly change his ways?
Maybe so.

Other NFL teams turn their teams around every year.

Nolan's coaching history is on record. It's McCarthy's fault if Nolan fails.

Coaches and players who are successful
on one team won’t necessarily do well elsewhere, and vice versa!

I look forward to watching it play out. I’ll be sad/mad when it actually happens.

https://www.espn.com/blog/dallas-co...ys-defense-to-have-swarming-type-of-mentality

they were "swarming" last year, just couldn't make plays

this team had the #1 O in the NFL, the worst STs in the NFL, and a D dead last in the INTs
a basket case

ain't worried about MM from an offensive point of view, if MM can deal with JJ and such is yet to be seen
the biggest O problem MM has is the worst starting field position in the NFL
keep in ind Dak was 16 TDs / 0 INTs in the red zone, a with 26% TD rate per attempt
it's an O capable of 30+ a game in 2021

STs can't help but get better, wow they were bad

Nolan is a defensive coach's coach, grew up in it, the one thing we keep hearing is talent over scheme ... at least he's humble and looking at new playmakers, and or using existing players differently

still - Nolan has to flip half the D roster and put in a new system.

IMO, the Boys have to add playmakers at DL, LB, and DB this off season to make a run.
They don't have to spend a high pick on O - they can get 1 or 2 impact D players in the draft , 1 or 2 in FA
but hard to picture much useful depth in 2021 ...

just a reality check. I'll be happy if they just add 2 real DTs under 25 and bloodthirsty

I doubt the D looks smooth the first half of 2021 - if they play well down the stretch we have a shot

frankly, I don't think anyone can project how the Boys' D will perform next year

probably better than 7 INTs, down from 9 in 2018, *that's so ridiculous*
how many more likely will determine the fate of the team in the foreseeable future
Don't drink the Kool Aid. Nolan is no Son of a Bum Phillips. He was Dan Reeves DC during his time in Denver and NY Giants.

He became HC of the 49ers based on his Dad who was a 49er HC.

Before that he was the DC of the Ravens. Baltimore’s defense took a significant step back from its normally high level of play in 2002. Star linebacker Ray Lewis suffered a shoulder injury which limited him to playing in only five games during the season, and the team finished 19th in scoring defense after finishing 4th in the NFL the previous year. That Previous Year Nolan was the WR coach.
