Zoners don't laugh: :laugh2:

I know it is early, but from all I am reading about this young defense and the talent and depth accross the board, DO NOT be surprised if this DEFENSE becomes the BEST we ever fielded.

CANTY, RATLIFF, FERGUSON, SPEARS, COLEMAN, JOHNSON, STANLEY, HATCHER

JAMES, CARPENTER, SINGLETON, WARE, ELLIS, BURNETT, JR GRUPH sp?

WILLIAMS, TNEW, GLENN, HENRY, DAVIS

This is just off the top of my head.......I am leaving a few out.....that is how tough this DEFENSE can Be? :starspin

I LOVED all of our past great DEFENSES, however, I really believe this group if they stay HEALTHY will be known........

AS OUR BEST EVER IN CWOBOYS HISTORY--BOOK IT ZONERS!

I never saw the Doomsday Defense of the early 70's, but from what I'm told it was awesome...I do remember the defenses we had from 1975-1978 however, and they were truly great and a nightmare for QB's...then we had the 1992-1995 defense, which I would describe as very good as well

for this defense to be anywhere near as good as those defenses, a few things have to happen:

1) quit blowing leads with alarming frequency
2) MUCH better pass rush...we've had nothing but poor to mediocre pass rush for years
3) more consistent vs the run...giving up 4.0+ yds per carry is mediocre

Let them play some real games first. There are so many young guys out there. It may still take a while for them to gel.

The 1977 defense was perhaps the franchise's best defense. It dominated opponents. The 1992 defense was really good, too. It could do lots of different things, but I don't really consider it a dominant defense. That is just relative to the 1977 team because they did shut down teams.

Remember: The advantage those DEFENSES had over this one was the support of an great offense with an superb OFFENSIVE LINE.

This is the achllies heel our 06 DEFENSE must overcome.......an AVERAGE offense becuase of our OL........BUT, they will carry us this year! :starspin

Still a little early before we put this year's edition in Canton. Doomsday had a few little accomplishments like playoffs and Super Bowls and such.

Best ever? Now? Probably not.

But I think they are on track to dominate.

And chances are that they will only get better in another year or two.

There are strengths and weaknesses associated with any scheme, and it is said that a vulnerability of the 3-4 scheme is run defense. The NT position is critical. Not sure that the Cowboys have an all-star there (yet). But this year's defense should be quite good anyway.

67-71 Defense had more HOF players and should be in HOF then any other team the Boys have ever had. Lilly, Howley, Jordan, Renfro, Green, Waters, Harris, Pugh, Andrie. only Lilly and Renfro are in. Howley, Adderley , Green and Waters and Harris deserve to be in as much as any of the borderline Steelers that are in.

They talk about the loss in Superbowl 13 as one of the reasons more Cowboys aren't in the HOF. If Dallas wins the Ice Bowl and then goes on to win Superbowl 2, all those guys you just mentioned are either in the HOF or at least close.

I think #3 is more distressing/important. The average yards per carry needs to be cut to at least 3.6.

Those very CLOSE losses to Lombardi and the Packers are what kept that team from being considered one of the best of all time- if not the best.
Lombardi was great, and so were the packers. It was OUR BAD LUCK to have our teams facing two other great teams from 66-79. Then early 80's comes the 49rs.

If this year's D could top '71 or '77 it would be amazing.

Players like Bob Lilly, Mel Renfro, and Chuck Howley simply don't come along every year.

In '77 Harvey Martin had 23 sacks in 14 games and Randy White was terrorizing OLs.

To come close to those Ds this year's version will have to sack the QB 50+ times, take the ball away 15 times more than the Offense gives it up, score when they take the ball away at least 4 times, hold teams below 14 Points per game, and hold teams to about 3.2 yards per carry.

That isn't easy. We have depth and potential, but we also have youth.

CC I think you may be on to something:

I think the Cowboys are on the brink to once again become dominant on D.

The talent is there, we are deep and solid a the LB position, the DL should be very good w/a great rotation. The CB position w/Newman, Henry, and Glen could arguebly be one of the best in the league. We may have answered our ? at safety.

Yes the D could be great. The only thing left for them to do is go out and make it happen on gameday.

EXACTLY Cbz40!!

Don't forget the size and strength of our DL........they are HUGE and FAST......and by far the BIGGEST/FASTEST set of LB's in our history......all us old timers know that!

Cliff Harris (although great) even he did not hit like ROY WILLIAMS!

NO INJURIES = A VERY SPECIAL YEAR on DEFENSE! :star:

This defense does have a chance to dominate THIS YEAR. Think we have the ability to come at an offense in waves due to our outstanding depth. VERY important late in games to have fresh defenders. Im also thinking that we take a quantum leap when it comes to big plays on defense, Sacks, fumbles caused, interceptions, ect. Remember the year the Ravens won the superbowl? BIG hits and aggressive gangtackling. Think thats who were gonna most resemble this year. And YES, I understand the Ravens a 4-3 unit that year and we play the 3-4. Just more or less talking about the depth and aggression I think we put on the field this year........

..........I dont think these projected sack numbers are unreasonable AT ALL, does anyone else?.......Spears/4 Ferguson /2 Canty 6 Ellis/ 8 Pepper /2 Hatcher/1 Ware/12 James/1 Ayodele/2 Carpenter/ 3 Burnett/ 2 Henry/1 Roy/ 3 Davis/1 Watkins/ 1. To me that looks like 49 sacks on the year. Very good for a 3-4 team considering the league wide love affair with the west coast offense which stresses the importance of getting the ball off quickly. I say we end up with sack totals in the mid to high 40's. We do that with THIS style defense and YES...WE ARE DOMINANT.

"book it" may be a little strong. I like the defense as well, but I refuse to give much credence to this post or even participate in the one about naming our defense until they actually stop an NFL offense for 4 quarters of an NFL game, something they have not been able to do for a long long time.

If and when this defense starts shutting down or even dominating offenses without crumbling in the 4th quarter, then I'll be a believer and I'll be able to look at how they are doing it in order to come up with a catchy name for them.

Right now I'm only a supporter because the are just another team that looks good on paper...we're still waiting for them to put it all together during the regular season and beyond....but I quietly hope you are absolutely correct, Crazy.

That will take some doing but we at least have the potential of being a very good defense. The offense will help some as it did those 'other' Dallas defenses.

But they can't be mentioned seriously together in the same breath as being equals. Nottanow.

I like our new D very much though. Who knows. Maybe we will win a few SBs here in the next 3-4 years. People outside Dallas fandom seem to think we are in the hunt even this year.
