09' Could Be The Last Year For Cap...

* The NFL averted a labor war 2 years ago when outgoing commissioner Paul Tagliabue strong-armed the owners into agreeing to a collective-bargaining- agreement extension that gave the players 60 percent of the league's pot of gold. The owners can opt out of the deal in November, which seems almost a certainty right now. If that happens, 2009 would be the last capped year of the current agreement. There would be no salary cap in 2010, but the service requirement for free agency would jump from 4 to 6 years. "I think it's really common knowledge our last labor agreement is not our smartest move," Broncos owner Pat Bowlen told Jeff Legwold, of the Rocky Mountain News. "And I'm not talking about [just] the Denver Broncos. I'm talking about the [whole] league. We can't live with this deal."

The small market teams will go back suck'n! The powerhouse's will be the Cowboys, Skins, GB and Pats to name a few.

Well, they'll either have to go with an uncapped system, there by potentially hurting the small markets, or risk a battle with the PA over that 60% number. If a battle ensues, there is always the risk of a strike. With all this TV money being handed out i think the small markets can compete in an uncapped system. If it were me, I'd vote for the uncapped system to avoid any labor unrest.

I can't see them going without a cap. They will come to a new agreement, although probably at the last minute like usual.

Do you honestly think the players association will give moneys back and go lower than the 60% they already have?

If you do away with the cap then FA has to go as well. The cap only came about because of FA. Owners were willing to give into the players with FA but imposed the cap to keep the league overall competitive.

Maybe part of it is not the 60% but what rookie draft picks are costing maybe the issues and most vets won't resist that because that means more money for them and chances of their career lasting longer. I am sure there are other things in here.

If they go to an uncapped system I will be done with football. Much like I have with Baseball

this is great news. even the small market teams wil have enough money now. Owners and gms will start being able to build some great teams . the nfl has missed this the past 20 or so years

Since the owners and players association know that day is coming, why don't they start working on some kind of agrement now so we can keep labor peace?

I think i has a lot to do with Jerry's draft/signing philosophy. No point in negotiating till crunch time because nothing ever gets done until both parties are under the gun.

The Small Markets teams like Buffalo would complain about big spenders like Us and the Commanders, there's no way there won't be a cap.

You have no case and no point either.
The Yankees spent alof of money in the 80's = won nothing
The Yankees spent sparringly in the 90's = won ALOT
The Yankees spent ALOT in the 2000's = won nothing

Summary: Spending more... much more than everyone else netted them nothing.

While it is popular to sing THAT tune. It is false.

So what? In baseball every team can spend as much or as little as they want. Spending doesnt guarantee anything. Let them cry or do something about it.

To keep things anywhere near fair, I think it has to be one way or the other.

(Cap and Free Agency) or (No cap and no Free Agency)
