Help me here... I don't get it... I know this is a Cowboys forum but how can rank Staubach who averaged 13 passing TDs, 10 Interceptions, 2063 Passing Yards Per Season, and 205 yard rushing per season anywhere in the top 25 QBs of all time? His stats are mediocre as they come.

I'm an idiot? Nice manners. Here are Staubach's stats:

Note the 153 TDs and 109 Interceptions over 11 seasons. Unless my math is wrong that averages out to 14.0 (13.9 rounded up) TD passes and 10 (9.9 rounded up) interceptions per season.

Were you under the impression that Staubach was a 30 TD, 4000 Yard yearly passer?

Staubach's final numbers were 1,685 completions, 2,958 attempts (57%), 22,700 yards, 153 TDs, 109 INTs, 2,264 rushing yds, and 20 rushing TDs over the course of 131 games.

Averaged over a modern-day 16 game season, this would be his average year:

206 completions
361 attempts
2,772 yards
19 touchdowns
13 interceptions

277 yards rushing
2.5 touchdowns

Consider also he played in an era when only two quarterbacks consistently had a QB rating over 90 (Staubach and Fran Tarkenton). edit: And of the two, Staubach won SBs.

Edit: In response to your last post, I averaged games and multiplied by 16 to average out the three years he played eight games or less - skews the results.

If I'm not mistaken Staubach did play at least one 16 game season and he also missed a fair amount of time due to injury. Are you taking those factors into account in your "averaged over a modern-day 16 game stat" analysis?

The NFL moved to a 16 game season in 1978 with the addition of the Tampa Bay and Seattle franchises. In his last two seasons in 1978 and 1979 Staubach played in all but one game, passed for over 3,000 yards each season, and threw for 25 touchdowns or more each year. Not sure how that helps your point.

Put another way, is Tony Romo only a 1,000 yd passer? I mean, he's been in the NFL for five years now.

I found this memo to be quite telling on his bio.

Roger Staubach is not in the all-time top 50 in any major category.

I want to redo my top 10. Staubach is not in it. He aint even close......

Thats what I am saying. Roger Staubach was a very good quarterback, however, to put him anywhere near the top 10 QBs of all time list is a futile exercise of homerism.

#10: Roger Staubach

Along with David Robinson, the best athlete the U.S. Naval Academy ever produced. Staubach is probably best-known for his scrambling ability and late-game heroics, but his pure passing skills can also stand up to those of anyone in the history of the league. After sitting behind Craig Morton (#26 on our list) for two seasons, Staubach became Dallas' starter in 1971 and unleashed the fury on opposing defenses, ranking as the best QB in football by PAR in 1971, 1973, 1977, and 1979 (and finishing in the Top 5 four other times). He also led the Cowboys to two Super Bowl wins (although he lost two SBs as well). Because of his Navy duty, Staubach had the shortest career of any Top 10 member; he had only 11 seasons in total, 8 full, with only 146 adjusted games played. Had he played the same number of adjusted games as Tarkenton (assuming he would maintain his PAR/G rate), Staubach would rank as the most valuable QB of all time. He is also one of those rare Heisman Trophy winners to become an all-time great at the NFL level, which should count for something.

Of the 40 best seasons by any QB in the modern era, Roger Staubach had three of them. He spent prime years in the Navy, and like Aikman, his career was cut short by concussions. Would he have been a better QB if he had padded his stats for a few more years?

you are taking an "avg" of every yr, even though eh didnt become a FT starter until halfway through his 3rd season, and missed basically all of his 4the season

he basically had no stats in those other years...use your head

and as far as using just raw "numbers", you cant really compare QB's from the 60's and 70's to today...the game was totally different, Staubach yr in and yr out was at the top of the league in virtually everything during his time and was an incrddibly clutch QB who got to and won super bowls...

I am guessing you never saw him play too

Basically, that's exactly what I said, and I'm still waiting for an explanation.

1) Along with Fran Tarkenton, he was statistically the best QB in the NFL in the 1970s (with Bradshaw being the most accomplished).

2) If you're going to average all the years together, do you also consider Tony Romo one of the worst starting QBs in the league? He only has 6,000 yards through five years in the NFL - that comes out to less than 1,500 yards a season!

The difference is Manning calls his own plays about 40% of the time, Brady doesnt. As much as I hate his stinking guts, Id have to put Shady above Manning.
