Jason Witten was dead last of all the top WR/TE pass receivers in the NFL in yards per reception at 9.4... at least the guys listed in the top 40 pass receivers.

He can still catch anything thrown in his vicinity, however, he has lost almost all of his explosiveness after the catch.

Catching over 100 passes is usually going to hurt the per reception yardage. Too many dump off type hot reads.

100 catches and 300 yards. Not good.

Great point. It's not so much the number, but the kind of receptions he's getting. If he's averaging 5-6 yards a catch, and get 2 TD's, that's a lot different than 8-10 yds/catch and 8 TD's.

Dez will definitely be a focal point of the offense. Heck, he was last year, especially in the second half. The problem is, he's going to be the focal point of the defense, too.

But yeah, if Witten is catching that many passes, probably not the best thing.

I was going to say the same. He looked like a heck of an effective TE to me last season. I'd have to see the receiving stats exploded to get a better read on whether or not the issue had anything to do with JW's explosiveness.

Just going off my recollection, I suspect there were a lot of hot routes and catches going to the ground mixed in with his usual number of big plays. He also might have been slower or intentionally avoiding contact early in the season for obvious reasons.

Not necessarily...

TEs with around 100 receptions for the season:

2011: Jimmy Graham: 99 receptions, 13.23 ypc
2004: Tony Gonzales: 102 receptions, 12.33 ypc
2007: Jason Witten - 96 receptions, 11.93 ypc
2007: Tony Gonzales: 99 receptions, 11.84 ypc
2009: Dallas Clark: 100 receptions, 11.06 ypc
2006: Tony Gonzaled - 96 receptions, 11.02 ypc

What does it mean to be dead last of all the top receivers? How can you be dead last if you're a top receiver?

He said dead last in yards per catch.

So, just guessing here...but I think he means he still considers Witten to be a top receiver--either that, or that Witten was a "top receiver" in terms of number of receptions. But out of all the top receivers last year, he had the worst YPC average. Which would make him dead last in that area.

The single season record for ypc from a QB is 10.9. Witten's career low was last year but his career high is 11.9. He's never going to be a TE like John Mackey and average 16+ ypc.

If he gets 100 catches, it means that Hanna and Esco arent getting enough looks, and that we wasted another draft pick on a TE. In a perfect world, I think about 120 catches for those guys total would be right. 80 for Witten and about 25 and 15 for the other two.

My fear is Romo relies on Witten too much as a safety valve. Meanwhile Witten is not good in YAC and goes down very easily. I love Witten but he is getting to the end of his career and he is not the type of TE that can get a lot of YAC. It's not good when it is 3rd and 8 and Romo throws a 5 yard pass to Witten and we are stopped short of the first.

On the other hand I'm pretty excited about Hanna and Escobar. Hanna looked very fast for a TE last year.

I guess it's a good thing that doesn't happen very often, then. Witten is great at sitting down in the soft spots in coverage / past the first down marker (which also hurts his YAC, btw)

Witten only had 50.6% of his catches result in 1st down. For TEs with 50+ catches that ranked him 15th. So I'd say it probably happens more often than you realize.

I think 80 is even too high.

IF the oline is better than last year, demarco and miles stay healthy, dez takes the next step and the two other tight ends turn out to be legit then i dont want witten having no more than 70-75 catches next year.
