So he's going to get surgery, rest more, practice less, play less snaps and get more production. I don't see that happening and I wouldn't risk 12.75m on it. What if he gets hurt again in Training Camp or early in the season? That is another year wasted.

You say he is under no obligation to take a pay cut, just like Dallas is under no obligation to keep paying him. They owe him ZERO guaranteed money and only 8.5m in dead money, which is around half of his cap hit right now. Dallas got 6 sacks from Selvie for 730k and 11 sacks from Hatcher for 2m. Even if Ware gets 10 sacks again, it isn't worth 12.75m.

From what I understand, no surgery is required for Ware that I know of. Is he scheduled for surgery?

They owe him the balance of his bonus. Other then that, sure. Cut him and let him go on to his next contract. I'd actually be interested to see what that would work out like.

Take Ware out of the lineup and see how many sacks Selvie and Hatcher get. As I said earlier, I'm actually interested to see how this works out.

Dallas doesn't owe Ware any money. They merely have to account for 8.5m they have already paid him on the salary cap. With over 7m in cap savings he can be replaced by a Free Agent or a draft pick and still have money to spend on another player or 2. A pay cut to around 6-8 would be the best for everyone IMO. They could even guarantee a similar salary in 2015 excluding pre-existing injuries.

He needs elbow surgery (bone chips) supposedly, but is putting it off for whatever reason.

I don't know what he would get but I'd imagine he'd get a decent contract. If the Cowboys owe him bonus money, then the Cowboys owe him money. How can you say "The Cowboys don't owe him any more money"?

If a player is paid a 10M signing bonus on a 5 year contract, they he gets all of the bonus immediately when he signs the contract; however, in terms of the salary cap, it will be prorated to count 2M per year. If that player is cut in March of year 2, then 8M hits the cap immediately that year. Regardless of whether the player stayed 1 year or 5 years, he received all of the bonus money in the beginning and none of the cap issues have any effect on that.

Bottom line, the Cowboys don't owe Ware any money. He just has non-guaranteed base salaries scheduled for 2014 and beyond.

Gotcha. The bonus is spread but has already been paid up front.

In that case, if the Cowboys don't want to keep him, let him go sign elsewhere. Will still be interesting to see what he gets.

So you think that he would get 12.25M as a free agent? He will be 32 before the season starts and has been injured the past 2 seasons. He had multiple injuries in 2013 (neck/shoulder, both elbows, back, thigh).

The Cowboys don't owe him any more money. The dead-money cap hit from cutting him is due to bonus money that he has already received.

He doesn't need to get that much to make it a better deal for him.

Just get more than Dallas is willing to pay him in base salary and it makes taking a pay cut for Dallas less appealing. Given a SB will be thrown in the mix, it's hard to imagine he wouldn't make more in 2013 by playing for another team than he would by playing for Dallas on a pay cut.

The going rate for DE's last year was about 4-5 million a year.

Dallas can re-sign anyone they want too. Heck, they could even go after FA's if they wanted. There will always be a way to find the cap room......just keep kicking the tab down the road.............................eventually, it might catch up or they could just keep rolling it over. Not the best way to do it but it is an option.

No, it always catches up to you unless there's a rule change. Lots of Jerry impersonators lurking around.
