in FA i would sign 2 of these 5(Lucas and Williams) CB 1 of these HB(Jordan) two of these ends (Adraham & Burgess) one DT(Hovan) and NT(Payne) and the FS(Ohalete). i would sign williams because lesser know CB and he played good when they played us this year. burgess because of injuries in the past
will come cheeper and is good situational pass rusher. Hovan big motor guy and payne to play next to him and NT in 3-4 abraham can stay down in 4-3 or stand up in 3-4 ohalete to play free and move roy to strong Lucas to go oposite t-new. and jordan to replace slow a** EG. what do you think?

CB Baxter, Gary 26.3
CB Dyson, Andre 25.8
CB Williams, Brian 25.7
CB Lucas, Ken 26.1
CB Smoot, Fred 25.9

HB Rhodes, Dominic 26.1
HB Jordan, LaMont 26.3

DE Ayodele, Akin 25.5
DE Abraham, John 26.8
DE Hall, Carlos 26.1
DE Burgess, Derrick 26.6

DT Hovan, Chris 26.8
DT Ferguson, Jason 30.3

NT Payne, Seth 30.1

FS Ohalete, Ifeanyi 25.8

If we go to a 3-4 full-time:

Hartwell
Smoot or A.Dyson
Basheer
P.Williams

Also:

Anthony Thomas

Stay in the 4-3

Abraham
Polley
Smoot or Dyson
Basheer

Also: A.Thomas

I think we can draft an olb with pass rush ability if go the 3-4 full-time. Hartwell would fit nicely beside Nguyen in the middle and has experience playing the 3-4.
Polley would be a quality replacement to Al "Have I ever made a play of consequence" Singleton if you decide to remain a 4-3 def.

If we stay in the 4-3, a pass rusher will be paramount and it will have to be through free agency as this regime clearly cannot draft anyone of significance at the position. If they dare try again through the draft, I sincerely hope it's David Pollack (if he comes in at 270+), the guy has a non-stop motor and great pass rushing ability...something our current DE's (one in particular) seem to be lacking.

Smoot or Dyson are no-brainers. Basheer would be a bargain job at the FS spot, but i think he has ability and is playing on a team loaded with quality safeties.

Anthony Thomas would become our power back, as a change-of-pace to JJ.

You turn to the draft to find a speedy wideout, and a mammoth tackle.

CowboysZone ULTIMATE Fan
Abraham, RDE
Gary Baxter, CB
Bashir, FS
Kendrell Bell, LB

Gotta take a look at Cory Simon and Shaun Rogers at DT as well. I think we could get a very good DT in the draft using the Bills pick and use our pick (which will be higher than Buffalo's) on WR Mike Williams! The offense has a Pro Bowl TE in Witten and needs explosiveness at WR and RB. Hopefully Julius will take care of the latter.

A defense that has Abraham, Hawthrone (rookie DT from Wisconsin), Glover and Ellis upfront with James, Nguyen, Bell at LB and Baxter, Newman, Roy Williams and Bashir in the secondary would be formidible.

The big prize of FA will be either Harrison or James, whichever one the Colts don't sign (they'll sign one or the other). Brian Westbrook is a restricted free agent, and I can't imagine the Eagles will let him get to free agency.

Marcus Coleman of the Texans just signed a 3 year extension. He's not going anywhere.

I like Blackstock as well.

My feeling is that BP is going to go to the 3-4 next season. If so, we are going to need another OLB in case the free agent signee Thornton is not all he is cracked up to be.

Glover and Ellis can be our DE's and they will have to find a monster DT who can hold his own in the middle.

I like some of these big names as well, but do you guys think John Abraham, Shaun Ellis, Shaun Rogers, Fred Smoot, or even Ken Lucas (or is it Lucus) will see free agency? Lucus may see the open market because the Hawks have some other big name free agents. For instance, I live in DC and The Post has already reported that the Skins are already well on their way to bringing Smoot back. And, everyone knows what kind of cap shape they're in. I think Gosselin addressed it last week in his QandA when he said teams don't let quality young players at premium positions go. basically, teams will massage the cap to keep premium players.

Last year, for instance, the Eagles signed Kearse. But Kearse made it to free agency because he was injury prone. It's hard to imagine the Titans wouldn't have tried to create room for him if he had a clean bill of health.

Some more realistic guys could be Anthony Henry, Renaldo Hill, Andre Dyson (who someone mentioned, though I think he was benched for a bit this year), Reggie Hayward, Sedrick Hodge, Tommy Polley, Jason Ferguson (who I've read the Jets also want to keep) and a young guy like Rocky Bernard. They would be upgrades, though they wouldn't put this team over the top.

Basically it seems like this team needs to draft well and hope it can find some young guys with upside in free agency. Maybe, they'll get lucky and one or two big name guys will make it out there. I certainly hope so. But that seems a bit far fetched and bit of wishful thinking. Teams manage the cap much better than they used to.

Anyway, just my two cents.

And, as someone who is a UVA fan (though their B'ball will suck this year), Blackstock is a stud. Brooks is good too, but Blackstock is a great pass rusher.

The Cowboys said last offseason they were going to be active in free agency because they had cap room and you see what they did.

I'll believe it when I see it.

It seems management has a different view of playmakers than fans do.

The FAs from the Cowboys are so impressive. I wonder how much we have to pay other teams to sign them?

Jets unlikely can keep both Ellis and Abraham. Hopefully we can steal one of them. LB Bell would be incredible upgrade for us but would Pitt let him go?

If they keep Abraham we're screwed. Ellis does us no good. He's a LE, not a RE. We already have a LE. We need someone that we KNOW can play RE, at a high level, on a consistent basis. That's John Abraham. HOpefully the Jets don't resign him.

Abraham may be no good either if Zimmer keeps telling him to play run first.

i actually had a pretty short list.

david givens - wr ne
charles woodson, cb oakland (tenn cb considered here also)
shaun rogers, dt det (we should have just drafted him way back when)
shaun alexander, rb sea (again, shoulda drafted, but $ will be too high and no more 1's to seattle! but it's fun to dream)
fred smoot, cb washington

there are others to be sure. a lot of good dlineman are listed in the thread and how do you say no to that?

we've got needs and holes all over. most dominate are:
cb, de/dl, and painfully enough, wr.

all can be addressed by my "short" list, but there could be others better for a given reason i just don't know about. take givens off the list and we draft mike williams with our higher pick, score.

best available playmaker with the next.

score.

we just need to do a better job of blending FA with the draft this year.

I think Peterson signed his franchise tender....and then blew out his Achilles. He may never be the same player, but he could be had for a cheap deal possibly as he plays for another contract. I doubt he gets big money coming off an injury like that. Good work, Postons!

If Dallas signs the terribly overrated Chris Hovan, I will be one unhappy camper. But he is from BC, so BP will probably go get him.
