2016 NFL Draft: Heading Into 2016 Draft, Cowboys Have Most Draft Capital Since 1992

http://www.bloggingtheboys.com/2016...ft-cowboys-have-most-draft-capital-since-1992

The notion of draft capital is a very simple one. You add up the value of each team's picks on the Trade Value Chart to arrive at a total value for each team's draft picks.

Using that approach, I’ve calculated each team’s expected draft capital heading into the 2016 NFL draft, which you'll find in the summary table at the bottom of this piece.

For now though, let's start with the Cowboys. Based on the 2016 Compensatory Pick Projection from OverTheCap.com, the Cowboys hold the following picks with the corresponding draft value:

RdPickOriginValue
14Original pick1,800
234Original pick560
367Original pick255
4102Original pick92
4137Compensatory pick37.5
6192From Raiders15.6
6212Compensatory pick7.6
6216Compensatory pick6
6217Compensatory pick5.6
Total2,779

The last time the Cowboys picked at No. 4 overall or higher was in 1991, when they had the top pick in the draft. But since 1992, this is the highest the Cowboys have drafted. It follows that the draft capital for all the nine picks above must be pretty high too. In fact, the Cowboys enter the 2016 NFL Draft with the most draft capital they've had since 1992.

In 1992, still flush from the Hershel Walker trade, the Cowboys had two picks each in the first, second, and third rounds for a combined draft capital of 3,477 points.

This year's 2,779 points narrowly beat out the 2005 draft (2,717) in which the Cowboys had two picks in the first round and had what could have been a franchise-defining draft when they picked DeMarcus Ware, Marcus Spears, Marion Barber, Chris Canty, and Jay Ratliff...

To net a 2nd round level extra pick, Dallas would have to trade down at least to the #9 pick, or below.

I think they can trade with the Rams, and get the 15th pick and the Rams 2 2nd round picks and be ahead by 50 points on the value. Depending on where the Rams 2nd round picks fall, if they pick 15th in 2nd and have the Commanders 21st kn the 2nd.

Then we have a mid round 1st and can pick Elliot at RB, then have 3 2nd rounders

I like that scenario. Add to it a 2nd round tender on Leary with another team signing him. In hindsight of the disappointing season I wish they would not have signed Hardy...which might have netted them a 3rd round comp for Murray.

OK, back to reality now. I was just dreaming of 7 picks in the first 3 rounds and 9 in the first 4. :D

But will we get the draft pick in 2016, or in the 2017 draft. I am thinking that goes to the 2017 draft. But not 100% sure of it. Though that doesn't seem right to put it to the following year.

That is a good question. I assumed it would be the draft following the player signing but that could be 2017. I'll have to find the list NFL deadlines again or the rules on tendered players.

edit: The deadline for restricted players to sign an offer sheet is April 22 and the draft starts April 28 so I bet the compensation pick would be this year.

Anyone who thinks the 2005 draft could have been a franchise defining draft needs to revisit history.

Trading down that far could still get us Paxton Lynch. I would love Zeke Elliot, but the drop-off to 2nd and 3rd round RBs is much less than the drop-off to second and 3rd round QBs.

If the Cowboys did this move...they would still target a QB farther down in the draft. Not your favorite I have to concede.
