No Steve Carrell? He was great in The Big Short, as was Christian Bale.
I think that has to do with the Academy's limited categories. Both the Oscars and Golden Globes have five finalists that are nominated for their performances. However, the Golden Globes recognize individual performances as either dramatic or musical/comedy--ending with five nominees for each category or a total of ten. On the other hand, the Academy nominates five actors regardless of their movie's genre only. I'm sure Carrell and Bale received a large number of Academy votes but their total ballots were less than those received by the top five vote-getters. It wasn't that long ago when the Academy decided to break its own five-nominee limitation for its Best Picture category. They should consider doing the same with the acting categories. Well, maybe not the supporting actor categories. :p

Just an Academy Award nom is a huge billing boost for an Actor/actress. You could make a case that expanding the nominations would be a huge advertising boon. However on the hand, it may also cheapen the award to the level of a Grammy or Emmy.....

Ok maybe not THAT much lol

I get that but anyone could see Carrell greatly outperformed Bale in The Big Short. And I'm definitely not a Carrell fan. I think he's one of the worst comedic actors and his performance in Foxcatcher was greatly overrated. But he was unbelievable in The Big Short.

I really don't know what's going on this year with artsy films taking over. Just watched The Hateful Eight and Mad Max. Hateful Eight was easily the worst Quentin movie ever but Mad Max was actually one of thev worst movies ever in general. I'm really surprised that Mad Max was nominated. I can understand Hateful Eight because of the lovefest with Tarantino.

Haven't seen The Revenant yet but I'd be surprised if I like it. I thought Birdman (same director) was terrible. I saw Birdman at some film festival months before anyone started talking about it and I was shocked when it became so popular. And Birdman actually looks more interesting than The Revenant. Too bad that it'll likely be Leo's first win because he's one of my all time favorites and it had to be from a movie like this.

Oh well. Not a great year for movies I guess. Hopefully The Martian is good. I'm gonna see it soon.

Is Star Wars being left out for next year? If so, why is the Revenant in considering it just got released. I know it wasn't great but should get some nominations for something.

After Titanic I had no interest in watching a DiCaprio film. Now Ill watch anything just because he is in it. Kinda like Eastwood. If his name is attached to it, its going to be worth watching

I don't think it's getting nominated. It came out before the majority of films in this years Oscars. I really don't understand the academy. Now, I'm not a Star Wars fan. I understand how the originals are so popular, but I think the past 4 films (plus the upcoming 2) are getting by on name alone. That being said, the latest Star Wars movie was far better than every Oscar film I've seen so far besides maybe The Big Short. The real travesty is Straight Outta Compton. That was by far the best movie to come out last year by a mile and is the greatest music biopic since Walk the Line (one of my all time favorite movies). I really don't understand how Straight Outta Compton didn't get any nominations. But hey, this is the same academy that admitted to voting for 12 Years a Slave without watching it.

Yea, SOC should be in there. I think SW should get in for cinematography, special effects, etc. Revenant just came out, should be in next years group IMO.

You'll notice that most of the Oscar movies come out around the time of the Oscars. Probably a good way to make a lot of money considering most these movies are still in theaters. Seems kinda rigged if you ask me. If an amazing movie comes out in March I know it's not getting an Oscar. But if a mediocre movie comes out in January I know it's winning Best Something.

Star Wars is nominated in 5 categories (film editing, score, visual effects, sound editing, sound mixing).
