IRVING, Texas -- The Cowboys' 31-30 loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday was just another in a long line of strange and crazy defeats Dallas has suffered in recent years.

In fact, since 2005 we have come up with 21 losses that can be described as “only the Cowboys.” And that does not include the 2007 divisional playoff game loss at Texas Stadium to the New York Giants in which "Cabo" was added to the franchise vernacular.

Against the Lions, the Cowboys allowed 623 yards (329 to Calvin Johnson) but had four takeaways. Who loses a game with a plus-four turnover margin? The Cowboys. Who loses on a blocked punt for a touchdown in overtime? The Cowboys. Who loses when a field goal gets blocked and leads to the opponent’s winning field goal on an untimed play? The Cowboys. Who loses on a missed extra point? The Cowboys. Who loses when the coach calls a timeout before his own kicker attempts a game winner? The Cowboys.

The real play that lost the game for the Cowboys against the Commanders in 2005 wasn't Brunell's 70-yard TD pass to Moss; it was the Cowboys' failure to stop the Commanders on 4th-and-15 at the Dallas 39 earlier in the game.

Brunell threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Moss on that play that came close to being incomplete. Had it been incomplete, the Cowboys would have taken over on downs and almost certainly drain the clock and win the game.

That game indirectly helped cost the Cowboys a playoff berth and indirectly led to the Commanders' only playoff win over the last 12 seasons.

I wouldn't quite classify some of the defeats on this list as "crazy." Some of them - such as the 33-31 loss to the Giants, 17-10 loss to the Broncos and the 20-13 loss to the Steelers - still fall under the more "normal" category. They were frustrating defeats, but not too much different from most losses.

Calling those "crazy" is a real stretch. They were relatively normal defeats.

That's the game where we debated for about 2 years whether it was Roy Williams or Aaron Glenn who screwed that up, right?

For the record I still say it was Aaron Glenn's responsibility, but that Roy had been exposed anyway.

You know I'd almost forgotten about that freakin' nightmare of a game.

True. But it's still a lopsided amount of "crazy losses" to "improbable wins".

Honestly, I can only think of 2 crazy wins.

2007 @buffalo
2012 @cincy

I'm tired of being on the wrong side of stuff like that

Commanders 7-6, Eagles when down 20-17 and won on an INT by Williams, Steelers last year where we won on an INT in OT, Detroit in 2007 etc

If you use the criteria set out above, then you can find more.

How does this keep happening to the same team? It's just uncanny. It's like the Cowboys can NEVER catch a break. It's also the reason an all-pro level QB like Tony Romo is branded a loser while a noob like Eli Manning is called elite because two of the most unlikely title runs in the 94 year history of the NFL.

That's true. But I would still categorize 14 of those losses just down right crazy, and that's just down right lopsided compared to the 2 victories I mentioned before-- that is, unless someone can think of more, actual crazy victories.

But let's just focus on the 13 crazy losses during the Romo era (Disclaimer: I'm not blaming Romo here, just trying to keep things relevant.)

We can classify these as crazy losses, right?

2006 at Washington
2006 at Seattle(playoffs)
2008 at Arizona
2008 at Pittsburgh
2010 at Washington
2010 vs New Orleans (Kitna, but still "Romo era"-- see: no agenda)
2011 at New York Jets
2011 vs Detroit
2011 at Arizona
2011 vs New York Giants
2012 at Baltimore
2012 vs New Orleans

I was actually at 3 of those games. Jets & Giants in 2011 and Ravens in 2012. Going through that list was just reliving bad memories. I actually regret looking at that. I actually haven't seen the Cowboys win live since 2009 against the Saints in New Orleans. Yup. I haven't seen them win live in almost 4 years.

I have you, I have seen them win since the crazy win in Seattle in 2004 when Julius ran all over the Seahawks.

i know someone will bring up the bills or the raiders or the browns...but i honestly believe no fanbase in sports has suffered the way cowboys fans have the last 5 years. no fanbase has to endure such cruelty and embarrassment in defeat.
