Bum Bright purchased the Dallas Cowboys from Clint Murchison Jr.

Thank goodness he was only the owner for 5 years. Ya'll can grouse all you want about Jerry Jones and his self appointed position as GM. I'd take him any day of the week over Bright.

He was in the same league as William Clay Ford and Bill Bidwell as an owner.

His hatred of Tom Landry was almost more than Tex Schramm could handle.

Wait.

Do you hear that in the distance?

Listen.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

It's the sound of heads exploding while contemplating rebuttals.

Or John Madden is experiencing a bad case of diarrhea. meh.

I think Bum Bright also tried to force some idiot QB coach out of Walsh's Worst Coast Offense on Landry too, if I'm not mistaken -- ol' Gary Hackett, wasn't it?

Paul Hackett.

I hated Bum Bright. Worst owner in our history and one of the worst in NFL history IMO.

Oh, absolutely. But it really makes me appreciate an owner like Clint Murchison even more. Quiet. Stays in the background. Hires professionals to run the team.

The only good thing I can think to say about Bum Bright (which literally translates into "glistening rear end) is that his purchase of the team kept them in Dallas. But also surely some other potential owner could have done that.

Bum Bright was a horrible owner I think he was the majority owner of a conglomerate group Thank Goodness for Jerry. I was extremely happy when he took over

Bum was a Bum. He drained the team; refused to pay for good scouts; cut costs in places you should not cut. He was a total POS.

So true! Murchison stepped in when he needed to but mostly stayed in the background and let Tex run the operation and Tom the team.

The time he stepped in that stands out most to me is when he offered Landry a 10-year contract even though we had yet to have a winning season. That was the right time to be the mover.

Never could stand Bum Bright. His name fit him. The fact that he would only sell the Cowboys under the condition that the new owner fired Landry was pathetic. This guy didn't have the stones to do it himself.

I really despise him.

I've heard rumors (don't know if they're true) that Bum Bright ran the Cowboys organization at a loss intentionally so that he could leverage it as a tax write off for other bsinesses he had. And even tohugh the team operated at a loss he still made money by skimming off the top from the revenue (paid himself a hefty slalry?). And he also made up his investment costs from the eventual sale of the team, so all in all, while he tanked the organization economically, he got everything out of it that he personally wanted, if not more.

That is true and it nearly drove Tex Schramm crazy.

Bum actually had higher offers for the Cowboys than Jerry. But one offer was a Japanese business consortium and he wasn't going to let America's Team be owned by Japan. The other higher offer was going to keep Tom Landry as Head Coach.

Jerry planned to bring in Jimmy from the word go and he got he deal because it meant Tom was gone.

By the way, Tex and Bum had both already considered hiring Jimmy any way, so even if Jerry had not bought the team I think Jimmy would have replaced Tom. But with Jerry he at least had an owner dedicated to winning. Bum was not.

I don't know, I don't think he was all that bright.

That was a Tex Schramm production.

Bright wouldn't have known Hackett if he sat on him.

That is true. He pushed aside Jerry Rhome to hire Hackett.

Tex was going to do the same thing in forcing Landry to a 3-4 scheme in 1989. He wanted him to demote Ernie Stautner in favor of George Hill.

Really? I never knew that Schramm considered anyone but Landry for the job. Interesting.
