Nobody said it's the biggest need but it's a need because you are depending on too many if's in the Receiver Corps:

1) If Roy is a #1
2) If Austin want get hurt and becomes a #2
3) If Hurd want get hurt and can be a #2 or #3
4) If Crayton can stay healthy and shut up and put up

The point I'm making is they need to cover their bases and don't get burned because it could be a long year with a Questioable passing attack. You can shout all day about we are going to run more but you can't run when the box is stacked :)

Sorry, but when you said "Top Priority" I took that to mean biggest need.

And I think you can worry about anyone getting hurt, this is football.

You can also put Stanback developing into a contributor on that list.

But I think the odds are that at least one of those "If's" will work out in the Cowboys' favor.

Just read from another Thread:

Gryphon: ARTICLE - Dallas Cowboys: Best WR Options Now That T.O. Is Gone
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My RSS Feed has just posted the following:

by Dlux

With TO gone, the big question in Big D is how do you replace his production? TO will likely enter Canton as one of the most statistically decorated wide receivers in NFL history. Owens is the only receiver in Dallas Cowboys history to produce three consecutive 1000-yard receiving seasons with at least 10 TDs in each of those years. Irvin, Hayes, and Pearson never produced a three-year stretch resembling Owens'.

Is Roy Williams the answer?

Dallas fans better pray he produces—and fast. It's unlikely that Williams will match TO's production TD for TD, yard for yard. It's too early to label the Williams trade a bust. Romo and Williams need time to develop chemistry. Hopefully, they are at Valley Ranch right now throwing and catching, drawing up plays and, otherwise, getting on the same page.

But, with their window shrinking, Dallas simply must get a reliable second option at WR. The reasons are painfully obvious. First, although Patrick Crayton can play the second spot, he really excels as a third receiver. Miles Austin is not quite polished to be an every-down receiver (although he is progressing), and Sam Hurd spent all of 2008 on IR. Isiaiah Stanback is still a project with a tendency to get hurt.

Plus, lets not forget that Witten performs better down the seam when safeties are forced to roll coverage outside. Without a legitimate No. 2 stretching the sidelines, Witten's production is likely to fall.

Resting on the status quo will be disastrous if the injury bug hits. If Williams goes down with an injury, the Boys will field a very restricted offense with limited options on the flanks. I guarantee you that folks will be clamoring for Owens once again if this happens.

So what are Dallas' best options to fill the No. 2 spot? It's unlikely that a just-drafted rookie could fill this role. For every Eddie Royal and DeSean Jackson there is a Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly. The Boys' first pick in the 2009 NFL Draft is 51 (the second round). I find it unlikely they will be able to draft someone that provides instant production.

So we are left with trades and free agents. The obvious choice is Anquan Boldin. Perhaps the Boys can offer Tashard Choice plus a third-rounder (maybe even Miles Austin to boot) to get Anquan. The problem is that the Boys may not have the room to fit Anquan's salary demands under their cap. Boldin would be a great addition as he knows how to play, and play well, in an offense where sharing the ball is a requirement, and his work ethic, production, and commitment would surely be welcome in Dallas.

Other trade candidates could be Braylon Edwards, Jericho Cotchery, or Donald Driver. Each of these would be welcome additions in Dallas. They would be hard (and expensive) to acquire.

Tashard Choice could be used as trade bait. He is a luxury right now and the Boys should use him when his value is on the upswing. Ultimately, Dallas will lose him to free agency (see: Derrick Ward). Plus, with nine draft picks it is likely the Boys could find a decent RB in the fourth or fifth round (remember Choice was a fourth rounder) as a replacement.

On the free-agent front the options appear limited. Reggie Williams, Mike Furrey, Brandon Lloyd, and Ronald Curry are all available. They would be affordable and could provide some measure of depth. But none of them are likely to really bolster or add real value to Dallas' receiving corps.

This leaves only one WR option—the best one, in my opinion—Torry Holt. The Boys should actively pursue a trade for Holt or aggressively court him when he is released by the Rams on Mar. 17 (he is due a roster bonus that the Rams are unlikely to pick up).

Holt would be a perfect fit for Dallas at this juncture. First, he is only one year removed from an 1189-yard, seven-TD campaign. At 32 he is three years younger than TO with no history of injury. Holt put up huge numbers in the Air Coryell/Mike Martz offense that Jason Garrett runs. If Williams went down, Holt could easily move up to the No. 1 slot.

Holt is a supreme route runner who could mentor Roy Williams on the finer aspects of this crucial part of wide receiver play. He could teach Romo the finer points of QB-WR interchange. He would be a great stop gap to allow Dallas' young receivers to develop and flourish.

Holt would not come free, but he would not break the bank (three years, $25 million?). He would clearly accept being the No. 2 in exchange for a new environment and one more shot at the show. Clearly the Boys' treasure chest of young skill players would be a welcome relief from his last few years in St. Louis.

Finally, and most importantly, he is a stand-up professional who has always showed a high degree of character and leadership (the anti-TO?). Absent Anquan Boldin, Torry Holt is the obvious and most practical choice to fill the second receiver slot in Dallas.

1) If Roy is a #1

Roy Williams has already PROVEN in Detroit that he CAN be a #1 WR. Lets not forget that he managed to post solid seasons with Mike Williams and Charles Rogers as his #2 WR and Joey Harrington as his QB. He also posted a 82 catch, 1310 yard, 7 TD year in 2006 with Mike Furrey as the #2 WR.

Will Roy Williams ever post the 80+ catch, 1300 yard 10+TD years that TO posted, no probally not. But, then again TO doesn't have those type of years in him either. Roy will still be more than capable of posting 65+ catch, 1100 yards, and 8 TD seasons in Dallas. And with Dallas having a renewed Emphasis on the running game, plus Jason Witten, Martellus Bennett, Crayton, and Miles Austin around to get balls also. There simply is not a need for Roy to post insane numbers. Lets not forget also that Roy Williams has never played with a QB near the talent of Tony Romo.

2) If Austin want get hurt and becomes a #2

Austin being able to step up and be the #2 WR, is the best case scenario, it is not a must. Patrick Crayton has already proven that he can be a solid #2 WR for us. Lets not forget, who ever our #2 WR is, is in all honestly nothing more than the #3 option in Dallas as long as Jason Witten is the TE.

garyv;2680678 said:
3) If Hurd want get hurt and can be a #2 or #3

The team is not asking Hurd to be anything more than the #4 WR. And if for some reason Hurd can't play, we can go 2 TE's with Bennett or line Felix Jones out in the slot if we need 4 WR's.

garyv;2680678 said:
4) If Crayton can stay healthy and shut up and put up

Crayton has already PROVEN that he makes a respectable #2 WR in Dallas, and is a GREAT #3 WR. Also, why should we be concerned if Crayton can stay healthy? The last 3 years, he has missed a total of ONE game. I am definately not concerned about Crayton staying healthy. He has proven to be a very durable player.

As long as Roy Williams is healthy and able to play, the passing attack is far from questionable. Roy has already PROVEN in Detroit for 4 straight years he can be the #1 WR on a team and put up very respectable stats. You want the ONLY different between Roy Williams stats from 2004-2007 and TO's stats last year, about 10-15 catches, 200 yards and 2-5 TD's. And Roy Williams posted the stats that he did WITHOUT a "Jason Witten" for teams to also worry about, and WITHOUT a "Tony Romo" to get him the football.

The only CONCERN about our passing attack, is what will we have for a passing attack IF Roy Williams get hurt, as we do have NOONE proven behind him.

Just one note on the correspondence above: We do not need Roy Williams to replace T.O. to be successful in 09. We need the collaboritive efforts of Roy Williams, Patrick Crayton, Miles Austin, Sam Hurd, Stanbeck, Jason Witten, Martellus Bennett, Marion Barber, Felix Jones, Tashard Choice, and Deon Anderson to replace T.O.'s production. That is the ideal situation. No stars, just straight up football players. Stars tend to become a crutch to Offensive Coordinators and Quarterbacks that can eventually prove to do more harm than good, when in the field (e.g. forcing the ball to a playmaker to a fault). Without T.O., both Jason and Romo's development can progress as they will be forced to either spread the ball evenly or be proven to be medicocre QB and Offensive Coordinator at best. It's show me time. But Romo is a competitor and Jason is smart; I expect them to answer the bell, one way or the other.

Hes almost a waste of a spot.

Why not? If Jerry wants him he can get him.
Because it is not prudent.

9.5 million in dead money, Roy's 2009 money, and add on top of that the money Holt would command?

They'll spend that money on other needs, not WR. If we get a WR it will be via the Draft.

I don't think the #2 WR spot is going to be the biggest issue of this team going forward in the offseason. I just don't see that.

Epic failure of a post on so many levels.

DLux is my favorite author, lol.

I agree with the OP.

JASON WITTEN is a top priority. Get him the football as often as possible because he's a great player.

Roy gets hurt & we're done. I agree with the OP. An experienced 2nd WR should be a priority.

IF Roy gets hurt and is lost of the season, and IF Miles Austin does not step up. Then we would be in trouble. But, if we are going to that issue, we could say that if Jason Witten gets hurt and Martellus Bennett proves that he can not be a starting TE in the NFL we are in trouble also, we had better make sure that we are 3 deep at All Pros at every position then, just to cover all our bases.....

I feel much better with Martellus stepping in at TE and any of our three RBs covering for each other. For all that matters... I even now feel confident that the offense will still have a heartbeat if Romo goes down for any extended period of time. RW11... The drop off between him and the rest of our WRs is drastic. Just covering all bases..

wait a second... didnt the 3 amigos get their shot last summer, when Jerry cut Terry Glen...

I clearly recall, Hard Knocks doing episodes on this issue and Jerry going up to one of the amigos to break the news-that its time to take the training wheels off, when do we move on!

WR is one of the most abundant position in the NFL... Jerry has always (always) had issues with this position, why?

I really don't care what everyone say's about now that T.O. is gone and Roy Williams is the #1 guy this opens the door for Miles Austin, Sam Hurd and Crayton to compete for the #2 spot. I really don't think that any one of those three will strike any fear whatsoever in the opposing Defensive Coordinators game planning. We are sitting ourselves up for a huge letdown if Roy Williams turns out not being a #1. When your trying to move forward as the Boyz are trying to do you have to prepare for the worst. You go into the season thinking Roy Williams is #1 and hoping that out of Austin, Hurd and Crayton, one of them is a #2 but in my opinion due to past nagging injuries with Austin and Hurd and the fact Crayton is very inconsistent and shows more interest in running his mouth a top Priority is landing someone in Free Agency that you feel sure would be a solid #2 with the potential to be a #1 if Roy Williams turns out being more of a #2. They need someone that is an established Route Runner and not a free lance runner like both Roy Williams and T.O. really have shown to be in the past. They need someone that has shown he could be a #1 if needed. I say prepare yourself by signing someone like Tory Holt when his release happens by mid-March. They just don't want to go into another season hoping that someone can feel a role and realize that they couldn't like Brad Johnson last year. If you don't prepare you'll be getting your Popcorn ready at home watching other Teams in the Playoffs. This is just my opinion !!!!
