How a quarterback’s defense impacts his winning percentage

It’s really hard to accurately compare quarterbacks in the NFL, yet we do it all the time. Between their offensive lines, wide receiver, running game, there are just too many variables. Inevitably, we see a lot of flawed lists when trying to determine who’s the best quarterback in the NFL. Take Merril Hodge’s list for example:

But in recent weeks, I’ve had discussions with some of my NFL colleagues on the importance of a good defense to a quarterback’s success. We hear the term “winner” thrown out a lot for quarterbacks like Ben Roethlisberger and Joe Flacco, but we tend to label Tony Romo and Matt Ryan as “chokers” in close games. But the fact of the matter is this; Matt Ryan and Tony Romo haven’t been given as many opportunities to demonstrate that they are winners as Flacco and Roethlisberger have. Their teams’ defense just haven’t given them an equal chance to win a higher percentage of their games. Let me show you what I mean.

The chart below shows how many times a quarterback’s defense has given up a certain number of points and their team’s record is listed below. On the right hand side shows how many times a quarterback’s defense has given up 14 or less points and their record when doing so. Compare how many times Tony Romo and Matt Ryan have had “good’ defensive performances compared to those of Joe Flacco and Ben Roethlisberger:...

More confirmation of Romo being Underrated. This chart says a lot IMO.

Yes, great find, but I'm sure de-accreditation experts will be out soon. LOL...
