In today’s NFL the head coach is in a hard position. When his team wins, his players get all the credit. When his team loses, he gets all of the blame. If the season falls apart, a head coach often loses his job even if it’s not his fault.

That being said, there are still some head coaches out there who are so valuable to their teams that their jobs are totally secure.

These ten coaches represent the best of the best in the NFL. Either by winning championships or building contending programs, these guys have a strong foundation and should be successful or a long time to come.

Who is at the top of the list? You’ll just have to click through to find out. Here they are: the top ten most powerful head coaches in the NFL:

10. Jim Harbaugh – San Francisco 49ers (4-3)

Yes we’ve all heard the rumors. Harbaugh is such a boorish clown that the 49ers front office almost traded him to the Cleveland Browns. It doesn’t matter, because Harbaugh has taken his team to three consecutive conference championship games...

4. Jason Garrett – Dallas Cowboys (6-1)

Coming into this season I thought Garrett was on the hot seat. After a series of mediocre 8-8 seasons he really needed to push through and show the most demanding fanbase in America something.

Garrett has answered the call in the most resounding way imaginable. He’s cobbled together a respectable defense from scraps and built the best running offense the NFL has seen in a long time. DeMarco Murray is on fire and the pressure is finally off Tony Romo. These Cowboys are going nowhere but up.

If Garrett can get big D to the NFC Championship his children’s children will want for nothing. Jerry Jones is going to pay through the nose on Garrett’s next deal. Guaranteed.

yes, after 3 seasons of 8-8 and doing it his way we really had no use for Linehan, I really cant see a difference Linehan is making to this offense. We are still abandoning the run, thats non existence at this point. The wins are just not showing up. and really Garrett himself turned the D around. He really got on Monte Kiffen (is his name even used anymore) and really Garrett is the sole reason this team is wher, OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO wait thats before the changes that uses this running game, has put the D on a better path, and really put teh Cowboys back on national stage in vegas. (for the Parcells fans)

Yes, after seeing Garrett in charge and now we are seeing what the fans have been screaming and what a running game can do. Yes, if i had no brain cells left, i would so give Garrett the credit. Sad for JJ and JG, i do have a brain cell, and frankly if this hasnt shown every possible reason to let Garrett go now, i dont know what else will. Wining cures all, and its going to lift JG up, but lets not completely forget the dread Garrett left in our mouths because OTHER people are doing waht he was told to do for 3 years, than we have to get those people to do what he should have been doing. This is like explaining to Phillips and i did enjoy him as teh HC, Brain Stewart is no DC, None, comepletely totally, no defensive coordinator. I wouldnt keep JG on as water boy at this point. This is a big crossroads for Dallas, you are getting ready to turn the franchise over. Why not get a guy you believe in to be here for the ground floor of the next gen cowboys? I would really start thinking that today.

Oh, I wouldn't get too hysterical in declaring this the opportunity of fate being missed like when Wade Phillips was installed.

you mean the last coach to get us to the playoffs, i mean seriously, what were we thinking, those last 3 seasons at 8-8 have been so glorious for the franchise that i hardly notice we are 6-1 with only one season of bringing in a whole new coach and pay him to say "listen up guys, i have a complex play the other team wont be able to defend , RUN MURRAY" than hes paid to say "RUN MURRAY" than "coach is 3 and 2 waht do we do"? "RUN MURRARY"

How does this fool get the credit..... Lineman, Callahan and Marinelli are the game changers...Garrett had his chance and failed but the ol' saying winning makes everyone look good....even Garrett.... guess you can put lipstick on a pig...LOL

You have to rank him high. He's finally doing what he was brought here to do. Get results.

Now I don't give him that much of the credit for it because doing things his way has always been a sloppy mess and Linehan has helped correct a lot of that.

ITs like you are irked common sense finally rears its ugly head and here you are saying "these cowboy fans hollering for a running game that Garrett didnt give them are clearly silly"

Lets see he drafted the OL, hired Linehan, Callahan and Marinelli and the players love him to death.

Scott Linehan said the ground game was one of the main selling points from coach Jason Garrett when he took the coordinator position in Dallas all the way back in January.

“He said ‘the No. 1 thing we’re going to do is we’re going to get this run game like the old days,’” Linehan said of Garrett. “He was thinking of the days when he was wearing a uniform here. That was loud and clear, and we were all-in, I was all-in from the get-go.”

Right now, Jason Garrett is/should be the top Coach of the Year candidate PERIOD. Now a lot still can happen between now and the end of the year, but no one (I'm excluding Cowboys homers) expected the Cowboys to be 6-1 at this point and being so dominant at that.

It's really amazing how much he's learned about coaching in just this one off-season.

I mean, the only other alternative is coming to terms with the idea that maybe the issue in Dallas was something other than coaching in the first place. And that getting a top-10 scoring defense actually does make a difference when it comes to the 5 games we lost by a total of 8 points with a bottom 3 defense last season. Who's to say? I guess we'll never know for sure.

Garrett is still part of the chemistry that seems to have found its way. Even if he isn't as hands-on in the game plan as he used to be (and I have a feeling that, largely, he still is), this team is still Garrett's, and has Garrett's philosophy.

He deserves credit. Just because he isn't the guy calling plays on offense and defense and out there throwing the ball and also rushing the passer and also sitting in Jerry's chair during the week unilaterally making all the personnel decision doesn't mean you can take away that he is the head coach of a team that some consider the best in the NFL right now.

He got someone in here that could a manage the offense in a way that it helps the whole team.

With Linehan the entire organization isn't so Romo dependent.

You really think Garrett drafted the OL.......RRRReally...Guess it was Garrett that told Jerry not to draft Manziel......come on man...maybe he hired Lineman......but had nothing to do with Marinelli....or the OL....guess he was responsible for changing the defense to 4-3 to.....putting a man on the moon and the Hershel Walker trade to........ wow...

Who spiked the Garrett Koolaid... making fans peg the BS meter ......uhm...

I see no one making jokes or ridiculing Tomlin at Pitts. What exactly is he doing? …

Well, he is setting the tone and establishing the organization culture. This is what this type of HCs do. And that exactly what JG did from day one. Just keep reminding yourself..The Process, The RKGs, Stacking good days together etc etc…

And no denying that the results are showing (not that his team is going to the SB) .. JG is establishing a culture here and for that alone he should be greatly appreciated and deserves the money he gets…
