Lets see him beat out Jack Crawford, Whaley or Russell first.

Another run soft DT. Smh

J. Crawford will probably spend more time at DE this season. ideally Collins will be your backup DT with Irving and presumably McClain.

Still has to beat Whaley and Russell in your scenario, don't see it if both healthy.

We've quietly improved this interior D-line quite a lot with the addition of Thornton and the drafting of Collins. Both guys seem to be exactly what Marinelli is looking for. I'm actually comfortable with the DTs for the first time in a long time. My biggest concern now is the edge. I was already concerned before the Gregory and Lawrence suspensions. Now I'm terrified.

I see people saying we have enough 3-techs, but what we have is an abundance of SDEs who can slide over to 3-tech occasionally in the Nickel. Collins is a true DT who can play both DT positions in the base and Nickel. If he really turns into something special, he can even replace T. Crawford when his contract is up. T. Craw has been our only legitimate interior pass rusher the last few years. Collins is solid depth and a possible future starter. I like the move. He doesn't have to be a starter as long as he becomes a valuable rotational player.

I think people assume sliding SDE's over is how they want to run the defense. I believe that was much more out of necessity in 2015 then by design

With a good camp Collins could see 50% of defensive snaps. We only have 1 other true inside penetrator in Tyrone Crawford. A good camp could get Collins that sub package spot that will have him on the field the majority of time. He is a better fit for it then Jack Crawford. And for the first quarter we could probably use Jack more on the outside

All I know is with him and Thornton to go along with 98, I'm feeling good about our DTs for the first time since Ratliff went Benedict Arnold.

He may not be a finisher as a rookie, but I can see him as someone who will be able to disrupt the pocket and durress the QB before he sets in the pocket. I can see him being a similar player this year to what Tyrone Crawford was in 2014

I watched him before and came away that he was raw. I need to go back and look again I only watched a couple games. I really don't know the player at all. Thanks for the insight.

From what Ive seen he offers little right other then rushing the passer, he isnt a guy you want on the field in run downs. But as an intirior, he is ready now to be a disruptive penetrator. They gave him a Melton comp on the telecast, but he reminds me more of a young Geno Atkins

Strange that a man that big is a liability against the run. Also, his body type is not like Melton at all. Does he just need upper body strength or what?

The measureable strength is there, his #s there seem par for his position. It could be a matter of locking into a play style and not knowing how use his strength when he becomes engaged. Interesting because I remember noticing how well discipline Gregory was in his run assignments last year when watching Nebraska footage.

His core strength is terrible. I just watched what what breakdown had and he gets bent, turned, and accordioned too often.

His handwork technique is neophyte. Marinelli will be able to help him a lot. That first step though.

That first step is what they are looking for
