San Francisco 49ers: The 49ers added their fourth potential starter to their defense by reaching an agreement Tuesday with Patriots linebacker Tully Banta-Cain.

Terms of the deal weren't immediately available.

Banta-Cain was being looked at by 4-3 teams as a defensive end and 3-4 teams as a linebacker. He was replaced by Adalius Thomas in New England.

Banta-Cain, who has good speed, was a seventh-round pick from California and gets a chance to return to the Bay Area.

I didn't even realize he was still on the market. I thought he had signed with someone else.

I'm glad he went there, Cain was rumored to be on the Eagles radar.

Damn. I wanted this guy here. Figured he'd be a good fit at a reasonable price tag. Oh well.

Well SHOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dadgum I wanted this guy. Don't ask me why...other than an excellent Special teamer and a potential playmaker I don't know much about him. But anyone named Banta Cain has to be a good football player.

This is one guy I absolutely did NOT want under any circumstances.

When a team like New England is presumed to need LBs, and is not making efforts to keep you on board...says all I needed to know.

Thank you San Francisco.

Agreed. There are numerous guys in this draft that are much better than Banta-Cain.

Of course, but Carp is likely going inside. Hopefully Wade can find another Shaun Phillips in the 3rd/4th.

Not a bad player at all......

Explain why they replaced him with Eric Alexander in the playoffs. Alexander who is a 2nd year UDFA.

Alex is a fine quarterback. He improved quite a bit last season. I'm sure he'll make another giant leap forward this year and surprise everyone (or at least those that aren't paying attention).

What makes you say that? If anything the things Wade has said solidifies Carp at OLB.

Carp can be a top notch 3-4 OLB. We move him and all we've got is Greg Ellis or hoping we "find" someone. Why bother when we've already got that someone at that position?

I'd rather see Burnett take James' spot.

You are right about that. Not sure who he is going to throw to, but he did improve. Their divisio isn't great, but interesting to see how Seattle plays with already having Petersen and now Kearney at DE. (OR IS KEARNEY A DT?)

In a season or two I expect Carp will be considered better than alot of his peers.

Well, we know (1) Wade likes Carpenter's athleticism, (2) he has talked about rushing the QB quite a bit, but has never talked about Carpenter rushing the QB more, (3) Wade has stated that Ellis will be playing LOLB, and (4) we're looking at OLB 'tweener types in the draft.

In addition, Wade said they were looking at drafting Carpenter in San Diego, but at the time they had Shaun Phillips and Shawn Merriman on the outside and both were locks at their positions. They did, however, have a couple 33+ year old ILBs at the time, which leads me to believe that if they were seriously looking at him, they were looking at him for an inside position. Thus, Wade (like many others, including New England and Parcells himself) may see Carpenter as an ILB rather than OLB in the 3-4.

Just reading the tea leaves...
