49ers ILB Chris Borland has retired from the NFL after one season.
Borland, the 49ers' third-round pick last year, is calling it quits because of safety issues in the league, as he's concerned about the long-term effects of head trauma. "I just honestly want to do what's best for my health," Borland said. "From what I've researched and what I've experienced, I don't think it's worth the risk." Borland has been diagnosed with two concussions in his lifetime, but may have suffered others. He took over as a full-time starter in Week 7 as a rookie and racked up 107 tackles, two interceptions, and a sack while grading out as PFF's No. 4 inside linebacker. His and Patrick Willis' retirements put the 49ers in a severe bind at the position. Mar 16 - 10:13 PM

I thought he looked promising. Shocked. Another blow to the 9ers.

9ers are cursed these days.

MLB is concussion central. Getting blasted by 320lb guards and if lucky slipping by them or 'shucking' them only to be slammed into by a 220 pound bowling ball running 23mph. Cant blame him I suppose.

If he is smart he can make that money go a longgg way.

Wow...they are BONED! Couldn't happen to a nicer organization. Jed York is a tool and Baalke is worse. Borland didn't have any major concussions or issues, he just didn't want to take the risk. Gotta respect his decision and he told them before the draft. They'll be fine. Like 3-13 fine.

Wow and some here think the sky is falling based on the offseason so far. How much you wanna bet they try and talk Willis back out of retirement?

Wow. He was the only consolation to niners fans when Willis walked away.

Wow.

Wow,didn't see that coming. Wonder if they might make a run at RO now that they need an inside backer.

Doubt he wants to go there. They are in FULL rebuild mode and their own players don't even want to be there.

I played all the sports and loved football the most....came from a football family.

But every single doctor I know well (and there are plenty in and out of our family) tells me to not let my son play the game. The evidence for permanent brain damage is overwhelming and indistbutable....especially once you get to the higher levels of completion

Still, I do love the game.

Cannot fault Borland one bit.

So glad to see SF lose another player, btw:D

Ok, this is no joke, and a very big eye-opener for NFL fans and players.

That takes some ba, err guts to retire before making some real money. Props to the kid. I don't think I would do that if in his situation though.

I live in northern California and every niners fan I know is devastated. It's great!

I do think there is a chance though the organization will have doctors or other experts meet with him and try to ease his concerns. I think he may be too valuable to them to just let walk away easy. But then again it sounds like his mind is made up and he may be over playing in the NFL. That takes a lot of guts especially for a player that was becoming a star for them.

Please let this thread run it's course mods.

Back to the thread, is Boreland leaving the league to join the Illuminati? He did start 13 career games. And he retired from the 49ers, so 4+9=13. Not saying it's aliens but let's be real here.
